The Mahâbhârata is a fundamental reference for Indian culture. Because of its philosophical scope and encyclopaedic character it is in many respects universal, offering scope for study and comparison to those in the fields of law, ethnology, mythology, geography, the arts and philosophy. The authors sketch the conception of nature as it appears in several texts in the first volume: ‘The Sacrifice of Serpents’, ‘The Pilgrim's Guide’, ‘Skanda’.

Solid phase transformation and metal solubility were monitored after coprecipitation of Cd2+, Cu2+, Pb2+ and Zn2+ with Fe3+ to form ferrihydrite by titration to pH 6. The (co)precipitates were aged at room temperature for up to 200 d and subsequently heated for 60 d at 70 °C. The mode of (co)precipitate formation, rapid and slow titration, was also investigated. Metal solubility was measured by anodic stripping voltammetry. Surface area, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis were used to follow the transformation of ferrihydrite after initial (co)precipitation. Electron microprobe analysis (EMPA) was used to show the distribution of metals within ferrihydrite aggregates. Thermal treatment produced a reduction in soluble Cd2+ and Zn2+, whereas Pb2+ appeared to be expelled from the solid phase. The more stable coprecipitate (formed by slow titration) maintained a constant Cu2+ solubility after thermal treatment. Characterization of the solid phase by XRD indicated that the presence of low levels of metals did not affect the initial or final transformation products, although metals present during the slow titration seemed to stabilize a higher surface area material. The rapid titration resulted in a less ordered (1-line) ferrihydrite than the slow titration (9-line). Furthermore, FTIR analysis indicated that the presence of metals promoted the formation of mixed (microcrystalline) end-products. The initial coprecipitation products seem to determine the final thermal transformation products. These transformation products include ferrihydrite, hematite (Hm), and goethite (Gt)- and lepidocrocite-like microcrystalline structures. Although experimental conditions were favorable for the homogeneous distribution of metals throughout the coprecipitate, EMPA suggests that Cu and Zn segregation within aggregates of Fe oxides occurs.

The collapse of the Soviet Union and former Yugoslavia was followed by the achievement of independence by a number of the republics they used to comprise. This gave rise to the appearance of what the author calls ‘quasi-states’ on the territory of the newly independent entities. Emerging from ethnic conflicts, the new units are being kept going by the action of an external protector (be it Russia, Armenia, Serbia or NATO). A quasi-state does not enjoy full international recognition, but functions nonetheless as a genuine state entity with its administration, army and financial system - all controlled by the protector. Its existence continually threatens the peace and security of the region in which it is situated, keeping it in a state of permanent tension.

There is even a paradox in the name of philosophy. Philosophy would rather love wisdom than have it. This is what exasperates those who interrogate it for answers and not questions. But this love must not be unhappy: being satisfied with unsatisfied love means loving love and at bottom feeling contempt for its object. It changes the object, the beloved wisdom is not what one thought one had. Those who say they have wisdom do not doubt, what they have is dogma, but those who doubt whether they have it may gain another wisdom, knowledge. Wisdom seems to change according to its place: it is false wisdom at the beginning of the cognitive process, but may be true in one or other of its relative terms. Knowledge is a wisdom that one works towards and to gain it one must deny having it, know that one does not know. Thus, in order to grasp what philosophy is, we must ask what a knowledge of not-knowing can be - a Socratic question - and what kind of cognitive process it is that can start with what is false to reach what is true; and this is a question to which the answers might be Platonic or Aristotelian. From Plato to Aristotle the ousia, what truly is, which is translated as essence in Plato, and as substance in Aristotle, changes places in this process. And if every philosophy decides to see true being as the thought essence of things or else as their particular substance, it would be a good idea to formalize the difference - gnoseological, ontological, political - between the two philosophers. It is a tricky project because it will have to contravene the rules of interpretation to produce this formal reconstruction.

Leibniz's work resembles its author. A. Robinet has called it “an intellectual storm.” In its two hundred thousand pages of manuscript (most of it still unpublished) there are philosophical works that have nourished the thoughts of thinkers from generation to generation; mathematical texts of fundamental import (we all know of Leibniz as the founder - or rather co-founder - of infinitesimal calculus, but this triumph ought not to obscure his other contributions; for example, his being a precursor in the field of formal logic and the inventor of analysis situs); treatises on physics that have been relegated to obscurity by Newtonian mechanics but which may be in the process of being given new life because of the problems that the classic paradigm has encountered in the twentieth century; an impressive correspondence (approximately fifteen thousand letters, addressed to more than a thousand corespondents); significant contributions to fields as varied as theology, jurisprudence, history, politics and even technology (Leibniz did not scorn practical problems, and we find, alongside the most abstract of metaphysical systems, notes concerning the problem of Venice's sinking or the production of cognac).

For many peoples the fall of the Soviet regime saw the disappearance of a structure that had ensured their membership of entities with which they had in fact been only partially able to identify. This is true of the Buryats and Russians living in Buryatia, a former autonomous republic on the shores of Lake Baikal in southern central Siberia.

Like most liberal Democrats in the USA, I am alarmed and embarrassed by my country's current presidential administration: its heavy-handed unilateralism; its rejection of such progressive international treaties as the Kyoto protocols to reduce global warming, the international criminal court, the anti-ABM and anti-landmine treaties, etc.; its inclination to curtail civil rights in the name of Security; its general tendency away from democracy toward oligarchy. Nevertheless, I love the USA much more than not, and I hope to be more proud of it in the future, as I've been in the past.

This study aimed to evaluate the association between dietary carotenoid intake and periodontitis in diabetic patients. Data on diabetic patients were collected from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2009–2014 for this cross-sectional study. Dietary intake of carotenoids was assessed through the first 24-hour dietary recall interview. Full-mouth periodontal examinations were conducted by trained dental examiners. Subgroup analysis was conducted in terms of age, gender, the number of missing teeth, cardiovascular disease, smoking, and anti-diabetic drugs. Totally 1914 diabetic patients were included, with 1281 (66.93%) in the periodontitis group. After adjusting for age, gender, race, education, smoking, dental implants, hepatitis, and the number of missing teeth, α-carotene intake ≥55.82 mcg was associated with lower odds of periodontitis than α-carotene intake <55.82 mcg [OR = 0.70, 95% CI: 0.53–0.91, P = 0.010]; lutein and zeaxanthin intake ≥795.95 mcg was associated with decreased odds of periodontitis than lutein and zeaxanthin intake <795.95 mcg (OR = 0.75, 95%CI: 0.57–0.98, P = 0.039). The association between carotenoid intake and periodontitis varied across different subpopulations. In diabetes, dietary intake of α-carotene and lutein and zeaxanthin was inversely associated with the odds of periodontitis, which may facilitate clinical periodontitis management.

A unique interstratified expandable mica was obtained by cation exchange treatments using an expandable mica synthesized from talc. The 23Na magic angle spinning (MAS) nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectrum of the expandable mica used as a starting material showed that it had 2 kinds of Na+: one was exchangeable and the other was not exchangeable. Half of the Na+ per unit cell of the expandable mica was replaced with Mg2+ by cation exchange treatments. The X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) analysis of the Mg2+-exchanged expandable mica, after heating at 73°C, indicated that Na+ in the interlayer sheets was exchanged with Mg2+ in every second layer and that it had an interstratified structure with a 12.5-Å layer thickness and a 9.6-Å layer thickness. The structure of the Mg2+-exchanged expandable mica was changed into a unique interstratified structure by the calcination at 600°C; one component had a stacking sequence of talc and a small amount of OH−, but the other had a different stacking sequence from talc and no structural OH—.

The layer charge is perhaps the single most significant characteristic of 2: 1 layer phyllosilicates. Layer charge affects cation-retention capacity and adsorption of water, and various polar organic molecules. The effects of layer charge on the sorptive properties of organo- clays were illustrated by Lee et al. (1990). It is generally agreed that the classification of 2: 1 silicate clays, which is a continuing problem, may be resolved by taking into account the magnitude of the layer charge (Bailey et al., 1971; Malla and Douglas, 1987). Studies on structural chemistry also confirm the importance of the layer charge for the characterization of the 2:1 phyllosilicates (Newman and Brown, 1987).

An improved regression method for the evaluation of standard free energies of formation (ΔG°f) of clay minerals is here proposed in an attempt to remove some of the limitations of the earlier method (Chen, 1975). Particularly, this method suggests a procedure for the assignment of rankings for Σ ΔG°f, i values. Moreover, an iterative least-squares fitting technique is applied to solve the exponential equation to obtain the estimated ΔG°f. The estimated ΔG°f data for the various standard clay minerals are derived and compared with data available in the literature; in general, there is good agreement between the values. It is also shown how the regression method can be extended to clay minerals of variable composition. The ΔG°f's for several such minerals have been evaluated; a large number of combination equations required for such computations have been listed, so that for other similar minerals the process of evaluation of ΔG°f is greatly simplified.

Social memory does not exist only as a collection of remembrances that a group recognizes as theirs. Much more than simple forms of expression of memory, the more or less ritualized situations it is involved in serve to express its continuity. Rituals are an attempt to preserve the cultural identity of a people, or a section of a people. It is clear that the social imaginary more often than not tends to give them a very big part to play. And so rituals appear to be an expression of memory that should be represented, or presented again, as synonymous with history. This imaginary sets up memory as something absolute: it must know everything. Symbolically confused with history, memory may even, in this imaginary, make it possible for people to find their place in the world. Memory and history may then be the elements making up reason. In losing their memory - or their history - they would lose the ability to distinguish and discern.

This paper examines the ion-exchange properties of synthetic zeolite Na-Pc, which was produced from perlite-waste fines and has a SiO2:Al2O3 ratio of 4.45:1 and a cation-exchange capacity (CEC) of 3.95 meq g−1. Although equilibrium is attained rapidly for all three metals, exchange is incomplete, with Ac(max) (maximum equilibrium fraction of the metal in the zeolite) being 0.95 for Pb, 0.76 for Zn, and 0.27 for Ni. In both Na → ½Pb and Na → ½Zn exchange, the normalized selectivity coefficient is virtually constant for NAC (normalized equilibrium fraction of the metal in the zeolite) values of ≤0.6, suggesting a pronounced homogeneity of the available exchange sites. The Gibbs standard free energy, ΔG°, of the Na → ½Pb exchange calculated from the normalized selectivity coefficient is −3.11 kJ eq−1 and, for the Na → ½Zn exchange, it is 2.75 kJ eq−1.

Examination of the solid exchange products with X-ray diffraction (XRD) revealed a possible decrease in crystallinity of zeolite Pb-Pc as suggested by the significant broadening and disappearance of diffraction lines. This decrease is associated with a reduction of pore opening, as indicated from Fourier-transform infrared analysis (FTIR), which in turn results in a decrease of the amount of zeolitic water. Thermogra-vimetric-differential thermogravimetric (TG-DTG) analysis showed that water loss occurs in three steps, the relative significance of which depends on the type of exchangeable cation and subsequently on the type of complex formed with the cation and/or the zeolite channels. Zeolite Na-Pc might be utilized in environmental applications, such as the treatment of acid-mine drainage and electroplating effluents.

Color variations from brown to yellow of synthesized goethite have been studied colorimetrically and spectroscopically. Goethite with various colors was synthesized at pH 13 and 40°C by varying the incubation time. Colorimetry revealed that the b* value (yellowish chroma) in L*a*b* color space was a quantitative indicator of color variations of the diluted samples. From UV-VIS-NIR spectra, the increase in the b* value was found to be caused by the increase in crystal field absorptions due to goethite formation around 500 nm. The b* value was a good indicator of the relative proportion of goethite in the precipitates including ferrihydrite. X-ray diffraction patterns and infrared spectra revealed that crystallization of goethite was associated with loss of water from the proto-ferrihydrite.

The close identification of Jean d'Ormesson with the CIPSH, of which he was Secretary-General, is legendary. CIPSH, a UNESCO-affiliated non-governmental organization, is seen as emblematic of the post-Second World War era when the humanities came together in 1949 to trade critical responses in a single forum. Jean d'Ormesson's relationship with UNESCO helped demonstrate the significance of this international network and consolidate the role of Diogenes as a voice close to UNESCO's own, sharing the same goals.

Sorption parameters are important components of models used to predict mass transport through dense or compacted earthen materials. These parameters are, however, generally determined in batch tests with loose, unconsolidated materials. Here we directly measure, using a specially designed cell, the extent of Cs+ sorption on bentonite compacted to a series of densities ranging from 0.50 to 1.50 Mg/m3, and compare the results with those obtained from batch tests with loose bentonite. The clay was saturated with a Na-Ca-Cl-dominated solution with an effective ionic strength of 220 mol/m3. The sorption data were expressed as distribution coefficients, Kd. Over the clay density range examined, Kd values for Cs+ with compacted clay are about one-half to one-third the value of those with loose clay. The lower sorption on compacted clay is attributed to small and occluded pores that Cs+ cannot enter; thus it cannot access the entire volume, or all the sorption sites, of compacted clay. The data suggest that reasonable estimates of Kd with compacted clay can be obtained by scaling down the Kd values measured on loose clay by a factor na/n, where na is the accessible porosity and n the total porosity of compacted clay.

Two main but discrepant tendencies characterize the intellectual climate of our world at the turn of the century. We promote, on the one hand, “respect for human rights,” i.e. for certain universal norms, but on the other hand, equally promote “respect to all cultures,”which are differentiated among themselves by their different world-views and their parochial norms. Not rarely do we see that the demands that such parochial norms bring are contradictory to those of human rights.
