Philosophy of science is still, in the minds of many, identified with positivism. This is understandable since twentieth century philosophy of science originates with the work of the Vienna Circle. Positivism is most famous for the verification theory of meaning, the doctrine that the meaning of any proposition is the method by which it is verified, and that any nonanalytic locution which cannot be proven or disproven by some empirical test has no cognitive significance. Positivism is an attempt to construct a “scientific philosophy” in the worst sense: it is maintained that (with the exception of propositions which are analytic and thus vacuous) only those propositions which occur in the sciences are meaningful, all other discourse having at best some emotive value, but no cognitive content, and all of this is maintained within the confines of an exceedingly narrow notion of scientific knowledge. This notion is so narrow that its advocates found themselves in danger of having to relegate most of physics to the realm of nonsense since physics contains many statements which are strictly universal and thus cannot be conclusively verified.

The reactions of simple conjugated dienes over divalent and trivalent transition metal-exchanged montmorillonites yield, in the absence of nucleophiles, a variety of products. Some of these products are a result of Diels-Alder cycloaddition reactions, whereas others are indicative of carbocation intermediates, i.e., other dimers, oligomers, and isomerization products of these intermediates. The reactions in sealed cells between 20° and 150°C show trends in the yields of the various product groups. Dimers of butadiene and isoprene formed by cycloaddition (i.e., 4-vinylcyclohexene and the monoterpene p-menthadiene (limonene)) were formed at low temperatures (20–50°C). As the temperature was raised, the total yield of dimers increased and higher oligomers were formed along with isomerization products of the dimers and oligomers. The products of cycloaddition, however, did not increase markedly. The type of solvent used for the reaction was found to influence the reactivity, e.g., the use of 1,4-dioxan rather than chloroform led to a reduction in total conversion and also to a markedly higher degree of selectivity. In the presence of a suitable nucleophile (methanol), both dienes gave the 1,4-addition product predominantly, which suggests that an allylic carbocation intermediate was involved. The use of an interlayer-supported nickel complex, [HNi(P(OEt)3)4]+, produced the only large scale polymerization observed in this work.

Photon correlation spectroscopy (PCS), a dynamic light-scattering technique for particle size measurement, was used to determine the coagulation rates of aqueous dispersions of relatively monodisperse South Carolina Peerless kaolinite, Silver Hill, Montana, illite, Wyoming montmorillonite, and Florida palygorskite. This technique allows quantitative measurement of the rate of coagulation for clay particles where the traditional turbidity method gives only a qualitative measure. The critical coagulation concentrations for KCl at pH = 10.0 were: 0.199 M for kaolinite, 0.202 M for illite, 0.290 M for montmorillonite, and 0.034 M for palygorskite. The effective Hamaker constants, calculated using Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek theory, were: 3.1 × 10−20 J for kaolinite, 2.5 × 10−20 J for illite, 2.2 × 10−20 J for montmorillonite, and 1.63 × 10−19 J for palygorskite. Stern potentials at the critical coagulation concentration at pH 10.0 were: −42.7 mV for kaolinite, −40.7 mV for illite,‒21.2 mV for montmorillonite, and −66.9 mV for palygorskite.

The idea that language is metaphoric in nature has often been suggested or stated since Vico and Rousseau. Derrida, too, often writes about metaphor and the impression he gives is that he is arguing for the metaphoric nature of both thought, whether philosophic or not, and language. Interpreters like de Man or Culler have helped to spread this impression. If it is correct, Derrida shares a pan-metaphoric view of language and whatever can be made with it. It is useful to refer to Derrida's view because in my opinion he has been very good at saying what language is, even if he has been very much in the wrong in seeing no distinction between language and language use. Let us consider first what he has been good at.

According to a widely accepted opinion, the most typical characteristic and even the constitutive element of science is measurement, i.e., those processes of measuring upon which science is based. For a long time this has caused a general orientation of disciplines seeking to call themselves “science” toward a certain form of quantification; in order to achieve the prestigious title of “science “ some form of measurement, of whatever kind, had to be introduced into the area of study.

The adsorption of n-octane and water vapor on natural kaolinite was measured. From adsorption isotherms film pressures were determined which were then used to calculate the dispersion and nondispersion components of the kaolinite surface free energy. In addition, thermodesorption of water from the kaolinite surface was determined. These results suggest that physically adsorbed water remained on the kaolinite surface, even at temperatures as great as 125°C. Therefore, experimentally determined dispersion and nondispersion components appear to relate to the surface precovered with a film of water. These values are: γSf(w)d = 34.4 mJ/m2 for dispersion interactions and γSf(w)n = 60.2 mJ/m2 for nondispersion interactions. Assuming a kaolinite surface precovered with a film of water, which decreased the free energy by the work of spreading, the following components of the energy for the bare surface were calculated: γSd = 67.6 mJ/m2 and γSn = 103.4 mJ/m2, for dispersion and nondispersion components, respectively.

We develop a comprehensive model for the creeping Poiseuille Bingham flow in channels equipped with a patterned wall, i.e. decorated with grooves or stripes that may represent a superhydrophobic (SH) or a chemically patterned (CP) surface, respectively, with longitudinal, transverse and oblique groove (stripe) orientations with respect to the applied pressure gradient. We rely on the Navier slip law to model the boundary condition on the slippery grooves. We develop semi-analytical, explicit-form and complementary computational fluid dynamics models, with solutions that have reasonable agreement. In contrast to its Newtonian analogue, a distinct solution for the oblique configuration, with an a priori unknown transform matrix, must be developed due to the viscoplastic nonlinear rheology. Our focus is to systematically analyse the effects of the Bingham number ($B$), slip number ($b$), groove periodicity length ($\ell$), slip area fraction ($\varphi$) and groove orientation angle ($\theta$), on the slip velocities, effective slip length ($\chi$), slip angle difference ($\theta -s$), mixing index ($I_M$), flow anisotropy and flow regimes. In particular, we demonstrate that, as $B$ increases, the maximum values of the shear component of $\chi$, $\theta -s$ and $I_M$ occur progressively at smaller values of $\theta$, compared with their Newtonian counterparts.

Many obscure aspects of the growth of civilization in its early phase are illuminated when the traditional Iranian lore contained in the Zend-Avesta and the Pahlavi texts is analysed side by side with the Vedas and Brahmanical literature. Simultaneous study of the tradition of the two branches of the Aryans fills many gaps that would inevitably remain if we were to confine ourselves only to the Indian tradition.

Building a culture of conceptual inquiry in psychiatric training requires the development of conceptual competence: the ability to identify and examine assumptions that constitute the philosophical foundations of clinical care and scientific investigation in psychiatry. In this article, we argue for the importance of such competence and illustrate approaches to instilling it through examples drawn from our collective experiences as psychiatric educators.

The stacking order of a 14.30-Å Mg-vermiculite from Santa-Olalla, Spain, has been determined from Weissenberg photographs. The results prove that the Mg-vermiculite structure is not a 2-layer polytype structure, but a semi-ordered one. Because the structure is semi-ordered, its resolution needed a dual approach: (1) a direct approach using an electron density projection along the y axis in conjunction with a one-dimensional electron-density projection onto the z axis; and (2) an indirect approach in which the observed intensities along the (0,k) and (1,k) reciprocal rods were compared to the calculated intensities given by model defect structures. The semi-ordered structure of the Mg-vermiculite results from ±b/3 shifts in the stacking of the silicate layers. The shifts are randomly either along +b or -b.

Goethites were synthesized from ferrihydrite in 0.7 M KOH between 4° and 90°C. As temperatures increased, the goethite crystals became larger and of less domainic character, and surface areas decreased from 153 to 9 m2/g. Surface area, oxalate-soluble Fe to total Fe ratios, chemisorbed water, Mössbauer parameters, and dissolution rate in 6 M HCl at 25°C are particle-size controlled, whereas mean crystallite dimensions, a-dimension of the unit cell, differences between the two OH-bending modes, and dehydroxylation temperatures suggest the existence of a low-temperature (high-a-dimension) and a high-temperature (low-a-dimension) goethite, with a narrow transition range at a synthesis temperature of 40°–50°C. Hydrothermal treatment at 125°–180°C of a low-temperature goethite led to a healing of the multidomainic, microporous high-a-dimension goethite into a monodomainic low-a-dimension goethite of similar overall crystal size with the properties of a low-a-dimension goethite.

Illite/smectite (I/S) and illite samples that appear to be 1Md polytypes on the basis of the lack of diagnostic reflections can be resolved as partly either 1M or 2M1 or both by either vapor solvation in ethylene glycol for 40 to 80 hr at ambient temperatures or for 4 hr at 80°C, or by heating to 375°C for 2 hr. If samples are so treated, a distinct narrowing of the I/S 003/005 peak occurs and diagnostic hkl reflections are revealed. These treatments, however, do not seem to affect diagnostic polytypic peak intensities, but rather the adjacent background. We propose that the 1Md term be restricted to its original definition—the disordered polytype associated with only the 1M ordered polytype. For illites in which disorder exists with a mixture of polytypes, the generic term Ad (disordered group A micas) should be used. Correct polytype determination of illitic material is significant because it reveals thermal history of the sediments and allows greater understanding of the depositional and diagenetic history of sedimentary basins.

Mineralogical and chemical analyses of fine clay fractions from in and around Lake Abert, Lake County, Oregon, show that the pyroclastic rocks supplying detritus to the lake weather to a suite of layer silicate clay minerals varying from high-charge dioctahedral montmorillonite to montmorillonite/intergrade smectite-chlorite interstratifications. In the lake these clays extract K, Mg, and Si to form authigenic interstratified illite and a trioctahedral, Mg-rich mineral resembling stevensite in composition. Both the neoformed interstratifications contribute little unambiguously to X-ray powder diffraction patterns, which are dominated by the reflections of detrital clays. From limited data it appears that the illite occurs below 0.8 m depth in sediments of a possibly somewhat fresher (brackish) lake and the trioctahedral interstratification between 0.4 and 0.2 m depth in sediments of a lake of about the same size and salinity (about 30–90 g/kg) as that of the present lake.

There are, it is said nowadays, “Renaissances,” in order to emphasize the diversity of expressions in this period of civilization and because of the concern for restoring the originality of the historical situations experienced at that time by the peoples of Europe. It is true that from the fourteenth to the fifteenth centuries, the Renaissance touched many areas in order to provide a response to challenges of the times. But even though these responses were varied, the world view was the same.
