Factor analysis and principal component analysis result in computing a new coordinate system, which is usually rotated to obtain a better interpretation of the results. In the present paper, the idea of rotation to simple structure is extended to two dimensions. While the classical definition of simple structure is aimed at rotating (one-dimensional) factors, the extension to a simple structure for two dimensions is based on the rotation of planes. The resulting planes (principal planes) reveal a better view of the data than planes spanned by factors from classical rotation and hence allow a more reliable interpretation. The usefulness of the method as well as the effectiveness of a proposed algorithm are demonstrated by simulation experiments and an example.

In this paper, a theoretical index of dimensionality, called the theoretical DETECT index, is proposed to provide a theoretical foundation for the DETECT procedure. The purpose of DETECT is to assess certain aspects of the latent dimensional structure of a test, important to practitioner and research alike. Under reasonable modeling restrictions referred to as “approximate simple structure”, the theoretical DETECT index is proven to be maximized at the correct dimensionality-based partition of a test, where the number of item clusters in this partition corresponds to the number of substantively separate dimensions present in the test and by “correct” is meant that each cluster in this partition contains only items that correspond to the same separate dimension. It is argued that the separation into item clusters achieved by DETECT is appropriate from the applied perspective of desiring a partition into clusters that are interpretable as substantively distinct between clusters and substantively homogeneous within cluster. Moreover, the maximum DETECT index value is a measure of the amount of multidimensionality present. The estimation of the theoretical DETECT index is discussed and a genetic algorithm is developed to effectively execute DETECT. The study of DETECT is facilitated by the recasting of two factor analytic concepts in a multidimensional item response theory setting: a dimensionally homogeneous item cluster and an approximate simple structure test.

Penalized factor analysis is an efficient technique that produces a factor loading matrix with many zero elements thanks to the introduction of sparsity-inducing penalties within the estimation process. However, sparse solutions and stable model selection procedures are only possible if the employed penalty is non-differentiable, which poses certain theoretical and computational challenges. This article proposes a general penalized likelihood-based estimation approach for single- and multiple-group factor analysis models. The framework builds upon differentiable approximations of non-differentiable penalties, a theoretically founded definition of degrees of freedom, and an algorithm with integrated automatic multiple tuning parameter selection that exploits second-order analytical derivative information. The proposed approach is evaluated in two simulation studies and illustrated using a real data set. All the necessary routines are integrated into the R package penfa.

We propose an index for assessing the degree of factor simplicity in the context of principal components and exploratory factor analysis. The new index, which is called Loading Simplicity, is based on the idea that the communality of each variable should be related to few components, or factors, so that the loadings in each variable are either zero or as far from zero as possible. This index does not depend on the scale of the factors, and its maximum and minimum are only related to the degree of simplicity in the loading matrix. The aim of the index is to enable the degree of simplicity in loading matrices to be compared.

A new criterion for rotation to an oblique simple structure is proposed. The results obtained are similar to that obtained by Cattell and Muerle's maxplane criterion. Since the proposed criterion is smooth it is possible to locate the local maxima using simple gradient techniques. The results of the application of the Functionplane criterion to three sets of data are given. In each case a better fit to the subjective solution was obtained using the functionplane criterion than was reported for by Hakstian for the oblimax, promax, maxplane, or the Harris-Kaiser methods.

Maximum likelihood and Bayesian ability estimation in multidimensional item response models can lead to paradoxical results as proven by Hooker, Finkelman, and Schwartzman (Psychometrika 74(3): 419–442, 2009): Changing a correct response on one item into an incorrect response may produce a higher ability estimate in one dimension. Furthermore, the conditions under which this paradox arises are very general, and may in fact be fulfilled by many of the multidimensional scales currently in use. This paper tries to emphasize and extend the generality of the results of Hooker et al. by (1) considering the paradox in a generalized class of IRT models, (2) giving a weaker sufficient condition for the occurrence of the paradox with relations to an important concept of statistical association, and by (3) providing some additional specific results for linearly compensatory models with special emphasis on the factor analysis model.

In three-mode Principal Components Analysis, the P ×Q ×R core matrix G can be transformed to simple structure before it is interpreted. It is well-known that, when P = QR, G can be transformed to the identity matrix, which implies that all elements become equal to values specified a priori. In the present paper it is shown that, when P = QR − 1, G can be transformed to have nearly all elements equal to values specified a priori. A closed-form solution for this transformation is offered. Theoretical and practical implications of this simple structure transformation of G are discussed.

Factor analysis and principal components analysis (PCA) are often followed by an orthomax rotation to rotate a loading matrix to simple structure. The simple structure is usually defined in terms of the simplicity of the columns of the loading matrix. In Three-mode PCA, rotational freedom of the so called core (a three-way array relating components for the three different modes) can be used similarly to find a simple structure of the core. Simple structure of the core can be defined with respect to all three modes simultaneously, possibly with different emphases on the different modes. The present paper provides a fully flexible approach for orthomax rotation of the core to simple structure with respect to three modes simultaneously. Computationally, this approach relies on repeated (two-way) orthomax applied to supermatrices containing the frontal, lateral or horizontal slabs, respectively. The procedure is illustrated by means of a number of exemplary analyses. As a by-product, application of the Three-mode Orthomax procedures to two-way arrays is shown to reveal interesting relations with and interpretations of existing two-way simple structure rotation techniques.

Procedures for oblique rotation of factors or principal components typically focus on rotating the pattern matrix such that it becomes optimally simple. An important oblique rotation method that does so is Harris and Kaiser's (1964) independent cluster (HKIC) rotation. In principal components analysis, a case can be made for interpreting the components on the basis of the component weights rather than on the basis of the pattern, so it seems desirable to rotate the components such that the weights rather than the pattern become optimally simple. In the present paper, it is shown that HKIC rotates the components such that both the pattern and the weights matrix become optimally simple. In addition, it is shown that the pattern resulting from HKIC rotation is columnwise proportional to the associated weights matrix, which implies that the interpretation of the components does not depend on whether it is based on the pattern or on the component weights matrix. It is also shown that the latter result only holds for HKIC rotation and slight modifications of it.

Correspondence analysis (CA) is a statistical method for depicting the relationship between two categorical variables, and usually places an emphasis on graphical representations. In this study, we discuss a CA formulation based on canonical correlation analysis (CCA). In CCA-based formulation, the correlations within and between row/column categories in a reduced dimensional space can be expressed by canonical variables. However, in existing CCA-based formulations, only orthogonal rotation is permitted. Herein, we propose an alternative CCA-based formulation that permits oblique rotation. In the proposed formulation, the CA loss function can be defined as maximizing the generalized coefficient of determination, which is a measure of proximity between two variables. Simulation studies and real data examples are presented in order to demonstrate the benefits of the proposed formulation.

Factor analysis is regularly used for analyzing survey data. Missing data, data with outliers and consequently nonnormal data are very common for data obtained through questionnaires. Based on covariance matrix estimates for such nonstandard samples, a unified approach for factor analysis is developed. By generalizing the approach of maximum likelihood under constraints, statistical properties of the estimates for factor loadings and error variances are obtained. A rescaled Bartlett-corrected statistic is proposed for evaluating the number of factors. Equivariance and invariance of parameter estimates and their standard errors for canonical, varimax, and normalized varimax rotations are discussed. Numerical results illustrate the sensitivity of classical methods and advantages of the proposed procedures.

Most of the currently used analytic rotation criteria for simple structure in factor analysis are summarized and identified as members of a general symmetric family of quartic criteria. A unified development of algorithms for orthogonal and direct oblique rotation using arbitrary criteria from this family is given. These algorithms represent fairly straightforward extensions of present methodology, and appear to be the best methods currently available.

Examples are presented in which it is either desirable or necessary to transform two sets of orthogonal axes to simple structure positions by means of the same transformation matrix. A solution is then outlined which represents a two-matrix extension of the general “orthomax” orthogonal rotation criterion. In certain circumstances, oblique two-matrix solutions are possible using the procedure outlined and the Harris-Kaiser [1964] logic. Finally, an illustrative example is presented in which the preceding technique is applied in the context of an inter-battery factor analysis.

In this paper, a new printed triple-band planar antenna combing two different modified monopoles and an arc-shaped defected ground plane is proposed and studied. The used two simple monopoles consist of a rectangular ring and a rectangular patch attached a straight metal strip. And a compact arc-shaped defected ground structure is proposed and used to excite higher resonance frequency and improve the impedance matching of the antenna at lower and middle resonance frequencies. The main radiation element of the proposed antenna composed of only two simple monopoles can support three omnidirectional radiation modes at three desired bands. To indicate the working mechanism of the antenna, the design process is illustrated and the parametric studies are carried out. The experimental results of the fabricated prototype confirm that the triple-band antenna has better radiation efficiencies, appropriate gains, and stable omnidirectional radiation patterns. And the tested results also show that the antenna can provide enough bandwidths of 2.35–2.52, 3.2–4.16, and 5.13–5.87 GHz to cover all the desired 2.4/5.2/5.8 GHz WLAN and 3.5/5.5 GHz WiMAX operations. Moreover, the presented antenna has a very simple structure. Thus, the designed antenna has high practicality and broad prospects for WLAN and WiMAX applications.
