We prove Reilly-type upper bounds for the first nonzero eigenvalue of the Steklov problem associated with the p-Laplace operator on submanifolds of manifolds with sectional curvature bounded from above by a nonnegative constant.

We construct new optimal $L^{p}$ Hardy-type inequalities for elliptic Schrödinger-type operators with a potential term.

The article is devoted to Hardy type inequalities on closed manifolds. By means of various weighted Ricci curvatures, we establish several sharp Hardy type inequalities on closed weighted Riemannian manifolds. Our results complement in several aspects those obtained recently in the non-compact Riemannian setting.

We show that the spectrum of the relativistic mean curvature operator on a bounded domain Ω ⊂ ℝN (N ⩾ 1) having smooth boundary, subject to the homogeneous Dirichlet boundary condition, is exactly the interval (λ1(2), ∞), where λ1(2) stands for the principal frequency of the Laplace operator in Ω.

We also consider a bifurcation type problem similar to (1), having a line of trivial solutions. We characterize the stability or instability of the trivial solutions, and the bifurcating, non-trivial solutions, and show that there is an ‘exchange of stability’ at the bifurcation point, analogous to the well-known result when p = 2.

In this note, we prove the Payne-type conjecture about the behaviour of the nodal set of least energy sign-changing solutions for the equation $-\Delta _p u = f(u)$ in bounded Steiner symmetric domains $ \Omega \subset {{\open R}^N} $ under the zero Dirichlet boundary conditions. The nonlinearity f is assumed to be either superlinear or resonant. In the latter case, least energy sign-changing solutions are second eigenfunctions of the zero Dirichlet p-Laplacian in Ω. We show that the nodal set of any least energy sign-changing solution intersects the boundary of Ω. The proof is based on a moving polarization argument.

We prove an equivalence between weighted Poincaré inequalities and the existence of weak solutions to a Neumann problem related to a degenerate $p$-Laplacian. The Poincaré inequalities are formulated in the context of degenerate Sobolev spaces defined in terms of a quadratic form, and the associated matrix is the source of the degeneracy in the $p$-Laplacian.

We are concerned with the existence of positive weak solutions, as well as the existence of bound states (i.e. solutions in W1, p (ℝN)), for quasilinear scalar field equations of the form

We prove the existence of positive radial solutions to a class of semipositone p-Laplacian problems on the exterior of a ball subject to Dirichlet and nonlinear boundary conditions. Using variational methods we prove the existence of a solution, and then use a priori estimates to prove the positivity of the solution.

We prove the existence of positive solutions to a semipositone p-Laplacian problem combining mountain pass arguments, comparison principles, regularity principles and a priori estimates.

For a non-negative and non-trivial real-valued continuous function hΩ × [0, ∞) such that h(x, 0) = 0 for all x ∈ Ω, we study the boundary-value problem

where Ω ⊆ ℝN, N ⩾ 2, is a bounded smooth domain and Δp:= div(|Du|p–2DDu) is the p-Laplacian. This work investigates growth conditions on h(x, t) that would lead to the existence or non-existence of distributional solutions to (BVP). In a major departure from past works on similar problems, in this paper we do not impose any special structure on the inhomogeneous term h(x, t), nor do we require any monotonicity condition on h in the second variable. Furthermore, h(x, t) is allowed to vanish in either of the variables.

In this paper we study a quasi-linear elliptic problem coupled with Dirichlet boundary conditions. We propose a new set of assumptions ensuring the existence of infinitely many solutions.

We consider a quasilinear elliptic problem of the form

where λ > 0 is a parameter, 1 < p < 2 and Ω is a strictly convex bounded domain in ℝN, N > p, with C2 boundary ∂Ω. The nonlinearity f : [0, ∞) → ℝ is a continuous function that is semipositone (f(0) < 0) and p-superlinear at infinity. Using degree theory, combined with a rescaling argument and uniform L∞a priori bound, we establish the existence of a positive solution for λ small. Moreover, we show that there exists a connected component of positive solutions bifurcating from infinity at λ = 0. We also extend our study to systems.

Let $\Omega $ be a bounded open interval, and let $p\gt 1$ and $q\in (0, p- 1)$. Let $m\in {L}^{{p}^{\prime } } (\Omega )$ and $0\leq c\in {L}^{\infty } (\Omega )$. We study the existence of strictly positive solutions for elliptic problems of the form $- (\vert {u}^{\prime } \mathop{\vert }\nolimits ^{p- 2} {u}^{\prime } ){\text{} }^{\prime } + c(x){u}^{p- 1} = m(x){u}^{q} $ in $\Omega $, $u= 0$ on $\partial \Omega $. We mention that our results are new even in the case $c\equiv 0$.

A homogeneous Dirichlet problem with p-Laplacian and reaction term depending on a parameter λ > 0 is investigated. At least five solutions—two negative, two positive and one sign-changing (namely, nodal)—are obtained for all λ sufficiently small by chiefly assuming that the involved non-linearity exhibits a concave-convex growth rate. Proofs combine variational methods with truncation techniques.

A corrector theory for the strong approximation of gradient fields inside periodiccomposites made from two materials with different power law behavior is provided. Eachmaterial component has a distinctly different exponent appearing in the constitutive lawrelating gradient to flux. The correctors are used to develop bounds on the localsingularity strength for gradient fields inside micro-structured media. The bounds aremulti-scale in nature and can be used to measure the amplification of applied macroscopicfields by the microstructure. The results in this paper are developed for materials havingpower law exponents strictly between  −1 and zero.

The existence of solutions to a homogeneous Dirichlet problem for a p-Laplacian differential inclusion is studied via a fixed-point type theorem concerning operator inclusions in Banach spaces. Some meaningful special cases are then worked out.

In this note it is shown that a result of Champion and De Pascale [‘Asymptotic behavior of nonlinear eigenvalue problems involving p-Laplacian type operators’, Proc. Roy. Soc. Edinburgh Sect. A 137 (2007), 1179–1195] implies that the variational eigenvalues of the p-Laplacian are continuous with respect to p.
