Intro: The introduction surveys the definition of “lyric” and the aspects of lyric poetry and lyric episodes in prose that run throughout the book, such as slowness, suspension, detail, and person, along with irony and reasoning. It also sketches out the human abilities elicited by the examined texts.
From the Georgics of Virgil to Flaubert's landscapes of happiness, Ullrich Langer argues that lyric representation holds a particular power to address our humanity. Ranging across a vast chronology, the book investigates how such poetry and prose activates our capacities for empathy, equity, irony and reasoning, while educating us in pleasure and helping us comprehend death. Each chapter constitutes a fresh encounter with some of the most celebrated texts of European literary history, demonstrating how the lyrical works, and what it elicits in us. Through deft rhetorical and philological analysis, the study presents the value of literary studies for both ethical purposes and aesthetic ends.
In this Element, I first introduce intelligence in terms of historical definitions. I show that intelligence, as conceived even by the originators of the first intelligence tests, Alfred Binet and David Wechsler, is a much broader construct than just scores on narrow tests of intelligence and their proxies. I then review the major approaches to understanding intelligence and its development: the psychometric (test-based), cognitive and neurocognitive (intelligence as a set of brain-based cognitive representations and processes), systems, cultural, and developmental. These approaches, taken together, present a much more complex portrait of intelligence and its development than the one that would be ascertained just from scores on intelligence tests. Finally, I draw some take-away conclusions.
Once early Enlightenment writers and their predecessors, such as Bacon, Hobbes, and Spinoza, had exposed many religious notions as mere superstitions, at least four different types of critique came to be widely adopted. The three Critiques, however, all investigate basic human abilities and the strictly a priori laws that underlie them. Immanuel Kant's basic philosophical and religious idea is also speaking against a fourth Critique, namely, the idea that religion is obliged to morality. One could assume that the Religion simply extends Kant's pure philosophical theology. He takes a closer look at one specific religion, thereby adding a new element to the debate, with respect both to its contents and to its methodology. The content deals with the four building blocks of Christianity: original sin, Christ, judgment day, and the Church. Even a superficial reading of Kant's text on religion reveals eight particularities.
