Stellar SiO masers are found in the atmospheres of asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars with several maser transitions observed around 43 and 86 GHz. At least 28 SiO maser stars have been detected within ∼2 pc projected distance from Sgr A* by the Very Large Array (VLA) and Atacama Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). A subset of these masers have been studied for several decades and form the basis of the radio reference frame that anchors the reference frame for infrared stars in the Galactic Center (GC). We present new observations of the GC masers from VLA and ALMA. These new data combined with extant maser astrometry provide 3D positions, velocities, and acceleration limits. The proper motions and Doppler velocities are measured with unprecedented precision for these masers. We further demonstrate how these measurements may be used to trace the stellar and dark matter mass distributions within a few pc of Sgr A*.

We present some preliminary results of our ongoing project about planetary systems around S-stars in the vicinity of Sgr A* black hole. Since S-stars might have migrated in the Galactic Centre (GC) from elsewhere, they probably still keep their planetary systems throughout their voyage. In this work, we study the destiny of their putative planetary systems after close interaction with the central black hole of our galaxy.

The question of the identity of dark matter is one of the most outstanding enigmas of contemporary cosmology and particle astrophysics. An overview is given of the subject, a brief history, some proposed particle candidates, and the several methods now available for finally solving this difficult problem. The galactic center is one of the most interesting places for the dark matter search using γ-rays, but also one that has challenging, maybe confusing, other sources of GeV-scale radiation.

The second generation instrument of the VLTI, GRAVITY, is expected to reach an astrometric accuracy of about 10 μas. It will thus possible to probe the spacetime close to the compact source Sagittarius A* (Sgr A*) at the Galactic Center by using accurate astrometric observations of the second closest star to the Galactic Center, S2. In particular, we show that combining GRAVITY and spectrograph instruments will allow us to detect several relativistic effects such as pericenter advance or the Lense-Thirring effect.

We explore the possibility that a substantial fraction of the positrons observed to annihilate in the central region of our Galaxy come from the supermassive black hole Sgr A* that lies at the center. This idea was proposed by several authors, but the propagation of the emitted positrons into the bulge and beyond remained a serious problem for models of the origin of GC positrons.

We assume models of positron production with different energies. The propagation of positrons from their production site is followed in detail with Monte-Carlo simulations, taking into account the physical conditions of the propagation regions as well as various physical interactions. Using the known physics of positron annihilation in astrophysical environments, we calculate the properties of the annihilation emission (time evolution and spatial distribution) for the different models under consideration.

We present the results of these simulations and the conclusions/constraints that can be inferred from them.

Recent observations have revealed various structures within the gravitational influence of Sgr A* – the massive black hole in the Galactic center. These structures apparently defy the fundamental principles of star formation and stellar dynamics. On one hand, the red giants display a flat density profile, contrary to the cuspy one predicted by conventional stellar relaxation. On the other, Wolf-Rayet and OB stars are observed where in-situ star formation should have been prohibited by the strong tidal force from Sgr A*, and their spatial and phase-space distributions also contradict our understanding of stellar dynamics. To explain each of these inconsistencies, many scenarios have been proposed, which render the model increasingly complicated. Here, we suggest that the sub-parsec stellar disk surrounding Sgr A*, which was recently discovered, can reconcile all the above inconsistencies. We show that during the fragmenting past of this disk, the star-forming clumps could efficiently deplete red giants by repeatedly colliding with them. We also show that because of the torque exerted by the disk, stars within the central arcsec from Sgr A* would quickly mix in the angular-momentum space, which naturally explains the observed distributions of Wolf-Rayet and OB stars. Our results imply that Sgr A* was fueled by gas and stars several millions years ago and could have been an energetic AGN. We discuss future observations that can further testify our model.

The Galactic center (GC) region hosts three of the most massive resolved young clusters in the Local Group and constitutes a test bed for studying the star formation history of the region and inferring the possibility of a top-heavy scenario. Further, recent detection of a large number of apparently isolated massive stars within the inner 80 pc of the Galactic center has raised fundamental questions regarding massive star formation in a such a dense and harsh environment. Noting that most of the isolated massive stars have spectral analogs in the Quintuplet cluster, we have undertaken a combined analysis of the infrared spectra of both selected Quintuplet stars and the isolated objects using Gemini spectroscopy. We present preliminary results, aiming at α-elements versus iron abundances, stellar properties, ages and radial velocities which will differentiate the top-heavy and star-formation scenarios.

The central parsec of our Galaxy hosts not only a supermassive black hole, but also a large population of young stars (age <6 Myr) whose presence is puzzling given how inhospitable the region is for star formation. The strong tidal forces require gas densities many orders of magnitude higher than is found in typical molecular clouds. Kinematic observations of this young nuclear cluster show complex structures, including a well-defined inner disk, but also a substantial off-disk population. Spectroscopic and photometric measurements indicate the initial mass function (IMF) differs significantly from the canonical IMF found in the solar neighborhood. These observations have led to a number of proposed star formation scenarios, such as an infalling massive star cluster, a single infalling molecular cloud, or cloud-cloud collisions. I will review recent works on the young stars in the central parsec and discuss connections with young nuclear star clusters in other galaxies, such as M31, and with star formation in the larger central molecular zone.

The Fermi γ-ray telescope discovered a pair of bubbles at the Galactic center. These structures are spatially-correlated with the microwave emission detected by the WMAP and Planck satellites. These bubbles were likely inflated by a jet launched from the vicinity of a supermassive black hole in the Galactic center. Using MHD simulations, which self-consistently include interactions between cosmic rays and magnetic fields, we build models of the supersonic jet propagation, cosmic ray transport, and the magnetic field amplification within the Fermi bubbles. Our key findings are that: (1) the synthetic Fermi γ-ray and WMAP microwave spectra based on our simulations are consistent with the observations, suggesting that a single population of cosmic ray leptons may simultaneously explain the emission across a range of photon energies; (2) the model fits the observed centrally-peaked microwave emission if a second, more recent, pair of jets embedded in the Fermi bubbles is included in the model. This is consistent with the observationally-based suggestion made by Su & Finkbeiner (2012); (3) the radio emission from the bubbles is expected to be strongly polarized due to the relatively high level of field ordering caused by elongated turbulent vortices. This effect is caused by the interaction of the shocks driven by the jets with the preexisting interstellar medium turbulence; (4) a layer of enhanced rotation measure in the shock-compressed region could exist in the bubble vicinity but the level of this enhancement depends on the details of the magnetic topology.

Despite many investigations, the physical characteristics of the molecular gas in the Galactic center circumnuclear disk (CND) remain a topic of debate. Its mass is highly uncertain, between 104 (from dust) and 105–6 M⊙ (derived from gas tracers), and depending on the probe, density estimates for the dense clumps are 105–8 cm−3 and gas temperatures run from 50 to a few hundred K. The range of physical parameters leaves open many questions about the nature and fate of the CND. Using several ground-based observatories, together with Herschel and SOFIA, we have studied the physical conditions of the dense clumps using CO, HCN and HCO+, finding that most of them are transient. Their densities are not large enough for them to be gravitationally bound in the tidal field in the center of our Galaxy.

Radio continuum observations of the galactic center region have revealed a number of vertical structures running across the galactic plane, most of which are reasonably attributed either to vertical magnetic fields or to energy release out of the galactic plane. We review the observed radio structures and discuss their properties and origins with a particular attention to the unusual manifestation of energy release in the galactic center. The relation of the continuum structures to the expanding and/or contracting molecular gas rings is also discussed.
