Portable MRI for neuroimaging research in remote field settings can reach populations previously excluded from research, including communities underrepresented in current brain neuroscience databases and marginalized in health care. However, research conducted far from a medical institution and potentially in populations facing barriers to health care access raises the question of how to manage incidental findings (IFs) that may warrant clinical workup. Researchers should not withhold information about IFs from historically excluded and underserved population when members consent to receive it, and instead should facilitate access to information and a pathway to clinical care.

This article reviews the use of portable microscopes in published science from Antonie van Leeuwenhoek's letters to the Royal Society to a recent paper on the phylogeny of the phorid fly by Hartop et al. [1]. The portability of a pocket microscope is a clear benefit, yet bulky compound microscopes remain the mainstay of field research and diagnosis. There is a growing interest in the impact of climate change, which drives researchers to investigate the smallest, most fragile life in remote places such as Antarctica, Mount Everest, and the Amazon Rainforest. Are pocket microscopes ready to produce publication-standard images?

Although academics can receive considerable training in selecting appropriate research designs, types of data to collect, and methods for analyzing data, as well as guidance on preparing scholarly manuscripts, there is a dearth of information on how to initiate and manage partnerships with organizations in order to conduct high-quality applied research, particularly when the research is quantitative in nature. In this article, we provide our own experience-based insights and recommendations to help academics more easily (a) initiate a research relationship with senior organizational leadership, (b) decide early whether to pursue or end a research collaboration with an organization, (c) keep the organization engaged during the study, and (d) maintain the relationship with the organization after data collection is complete. This information is proposed as a complement to traditional organizational research methods and as instrumental in the pursuit of research salient to the interests of organizational practitioners.
