Recent advances in molecular phylogeny and increasing numbers of studies carried out worldwide in subtidal and deep-water marine sites have confirmed that monothalamid foraminifera represent a significant component of the marine benthos. Fewer studies have been carried out on monothalamids in littoral zones, and here I describe more than 13 novel morphotypes of soft-walled monothalamids found at several intertidal sites in the Lorn area of north-west Scotland. Samples of sediment were collected from these areas and monothalamid tests were removed from the mud by direct manipulation with brushes, by coverslip-capture, by capture with a magnet for those with magnetic particles or by extraction from mud balls. Attached forms of tests from the same sites were isolated from collected seaweed blades, pebbles and decaying shells. Monothalamids were observed live and photographed in their natural colours, followed by examination after preservation in alcohol and embedding in glycerol. The greatest diversity of species was found to be at estuaries near to the mouths of the sea lochs, and the abundance of some of the species varied with the time of the year, being different for each species. The observed taxa included a Vellaria sp. and Psammophaga sp., two allogromiids, three saccamminids and six undetermined species; each assemblage of specimens may have contained more than one species not readily discernible by morphological characteristics alone. Taxonomic parallels between the described specimens and those in reports for other parts of the world and in deeper waters in western Scotland are discussed.

Nonnative Spartina species (cordgrasses) are widely distributed along the West Coast of North America, but have not invaded all bays with susceptible habitat. We used drift cards to assess the patterns and rates of potential Spartina propagule dispersal by ocean currents from estuaries with significant populations of one or more Spartina species. Cards were released monthly for 1 yr from Willapa Bay, Washington; Humboldt Bay, California; and San Francisco Bay, California; with recovery information reported by volunteers. Recovery rates averaged 37% for all release sites. Cards were commonly recovered close to their bay of release but were repeatedly found hundreds of kilometers both north and south of their release location. Cards most generally traveled northward from the release sites. Cards from Humboldt and Willapa bays were commonly recovered along the British Columbia coast, particularly in the winter. Cards released from Humboldt Bay were found farthest from their release sites. One card from Humboldt Bay traveled 2,800 km to Kodiak Island, Alaska. The timing of seed production, combined with prevailing currents, puts bays currently uninfested by Spartina at risk of repeated propagule loading by ocean currents. A coordinated coast-wide strategy for eradication of all nonnative Spartina will be critical to the success of individual bay-wide eradication efforts.

Food is an important factor for the survival of juvenile fish. Knowledge of the diet of co-existing species helps clarify their relationships with each other. A number of Mugilidae species are known to co-exist in estuarine systems, raising the question of whether they compete for food resources. The feeding behaviours of five juvenile Mugilidae species were studied in the estuaries of Strymonikos (North Aegean Sea) using stomach content analysis. It was found that the species Chelon labrosus, Liza saliens and Mugil cephalus presented high feeding activity during summer and autumn and L. ramada and L. aurata during winter and spring. The diet overlap between the species was generally moderate to low and the pair L. saliens – M. cephalus exhibited the highest overlap in Richios estuarine system. The species do not appear to compete for common resources, probably because there is not always a spatiotemporal overlap, enough food is available or they exploit different resources. Four out of the five species exhibited similar patterns of feeding strategies with varying levels of specialization at an individual level and a rather generalized pattern at the population level. This more generalized feeding strategy may permit them to co-exist. Only M. cephalus showed a more specialized feeding behaviour, with a strong preference for microalgae. The absence of a general pattern for the trophic levels according to seasons, sizes or locations, also imply the opportunistic character of the species. Both season and fish size influenced the variation in the diet composition.

Eight continuous corings in the west-central Netherlands show a 15 to 25 m thick stacked sequence of sandy to gravelly channel-belt deposits of the Rhine-Meuse system. This succession of fluvial sediments was deposited under net subsiding conditions in the southern part of the North Sea Basin and documents the response of the Rhine-Meuse river system to climate and sea-level change and to the glaciation history. On the basis of grain size characteristics, sedimentological structures, nature and extent of bounding surfaces and palaeo-ecological data, the sequence was subdivided into five fluvial units, an estuarine and an aeolian unit. Optical dating of 34 quartz samples showed that the units have intra Saalian to Weichselian ages (Marine Isotope Stages 8 to 2). Coarse-grained fluvial sediments primarily deposited under cold climatic conditions, with low vegetation cover and continuous permafrost. Finer-grained sediments generally deposited during more temperate climatic conditions with continuous vegetation cover and/or periods of sea-level highstand. Most of the sedimentary units are bounded by unconformities that represent erosion during periods of climate instability, sea-level fall and/or glacio-isostatic uplift.

Fifty six sediment cores were collected along a 100 km longitudinal transect of the Thames estuary. Total Hg ranged from 0.01 to 12.07 mg/kg, with a mean of 2.10 mg/kg (n=351). Concentrations of the toxic metal decreased downstream from London to the outer estuary and were positively correlated to total organic carbon (TOC) content. Many Hg profiles showed a clear rise, peak and fall, reflecting changing anthropogenic input through time. Surface concentrations averaged 1.27 mg/kg, confirming the effectiveness of recent environmental legislation and improved river management. Sediments at >40 cm depth from London reaches of the river (Waterloo Bridge, Cuckolds Point (Rotherhithe), Butlers Wharf (Tower Bridge), Millwall, Deptford and Millennium Dome) were highly contaminated, with levels of Hg of >7 mg/kg. The outer Thames had lower Hg, with the exception of Rainham, Crossness and Cliffe. Benchmarking against UK guidelines for the disposal of dredged material revealed that 88 samples from 21 sites exceeded the 3 mg/kg criteria (unsuitable for disposal at sea); 173 fell between 0.3 and 3 mg/kg (further assessment required); and 90 were of no concern. Using Hg as a generic pollution marker, the tidal Thames is one of the world's most contaminated river–estuarine sediment systems.

Studies in submerged prehistoric archaeology have gained momentum in recent years with particular focus on the inundated landscapes of the European continental shelf. Although this renewed interest lies primarily in modern coasts and seas, there are a variety of differences between the submerged prehistoric archaeologies of inland and marine environments, ranging from questions of scientific research to heritage management to practical field methods. Some of these differences are the result of location, function, and period. Despite this, there exist similarities that, if ignored, risk increased marginalization of the archaeology of submerged landscapes from the greater field of prehistoric archaeology. A holistic evaluation of prehistoric archaeological landscapes must include inland waters and coastal zones and their relationships. Aquatic environments, viewed both as individual locations as well as continuous and connecting waterways, are introduced for their differences and similarities, and simplified examples of material and legislation are introduced in order to contextualize submarine sites and practices within the greater fields of prehistory and underwater archaeology.

Intertidal cohesive estuarine sediments frequently support extensive microphytobenthic biofilms, which are usually dominated by epipelic (motile) diatoms. The distribution of different diatom taxa varies along estuarine gradients, but it is not clear what the causative factors are in determining these patterns. In many estuaries, salinity covaries with other environmental gradients, particularly with nutrient concentrations when the river is the main nutrient source. Autecological information is required to aid interpretation of these field distributions. In this study the maximum specific growth rate (μ) and stationary phase biomass of four common taxa of estuarine epipelic diatoms (Navicula phyllepta, N. perminuta, N. salinarum and Cylindrotheca closterium) were measured in axenic unialgal cultures grown under a range of nitrogen and salinity regimes. All three Navicula species and two different clones of C. closterium showed significant differences in their response to a range of ammonium (10–4000 μM) and nitrate (10–2000 μM) concentrations across a salinity range of 10–35‰. Growth rates of N. phyllepta were significantly lower at ammonium concentrations > 400 μM, but the other three taxa showed little evidence of ammonium toxicity, even at concentrations > 1 mM. On the basis of the response of each species, the following putative ranking of preferences for inorganic nitrogen concentrations (lowest to highest, with salinity optima in parentheses) was constructed: N. phyllepta (10–20‰) – N. perminuta (10–30‰) – N. salinarum (20–35‰)/C. closterium (clone 1, 10–25‰, clone 2, 25–35‰). Such a ranking should be interpreted cautiously, as interclonal differences and adaptation to local environmental conditions can alter the preferences of taxa. These autecological data are partially supported by previously published data on field distribution, and suggest that certain taxa may have value as trophic indicator species.

Changes in relative abundance of estuarine epipelic microalgae along an estuarine gradient were investigated, and population densities of different species along a small-scale nutrient gradient generated by a sewage treatment outfall and in laboratory mesocosms enriched with ammonium were also studied. The relative abundance of certain species of epipelic diatoms was related to location along the estuarine salinity and nutrient gradient: Navicula gregaria and N. phyllepta were abundant at oligo- and mesohaline sites respectively, and Pleurosigma angulatum and Plagiotropis vitrea were abundant at polyhaline sites. On a smaller spatial scale, though there were no significant patterns in microalgal biomass in relation to nutrient enrichment, there were significant differences in the population densities of different epipelic species along a multivariate nutrient gradient (decreasing concentrations of ammonium, nitrite, silicate, organic content, and increasing salinity and pore-water nitrate concentrations) away from a sewage outfall along a saltmarsh creek. The diatoms Nitzschia sigma and Gyrosigma limosum and the cyanobacteria Oscillatoria limosa and O. princeps had significantly higher population densities near the outfall, and Navicula phyllepta, N. pargemina, Nitzschia frustulum, Cylindrotheca signata and Pleurosigma angulatum were significantly more abundant at the seaward end of the gradient. In laboratory tidal mesocosms, sediment cores from along the gradient had their pore-water ammonium concentrations increased to 380–450 μM NH4+. After 26 days, the population densities of Gyrosigma fasciola, G. littorale, P. angulatum, N. phyllepta, Cylindrotheca signata, C. closterium and Niztschia apiculata were significantly reduced, while those of G. limosum, N. sigma, Scolioneis tumida and O. limosa were unaffected, or were significantly higher compared with control cores. Laboratory manipulations of ammonium concentrations supported the observed field distributions, indicating that epipelic species do have different trophic preferences and ammonium concentration may be a significant factor in determining estuarine species composition of epipelic algae.

The Stephanian Konservat-Lagerstätte of Hamilton, Kansas, deposited in a marine-estuarine environment preserves a mixture of terrestrial, fresh-water, and marine fossil organisms. The marine component is the most diverse taxonomically, whereas one ostracod species, commonly interpreted as a fresh-water form, together with vascular plant debris dominates volumetrically. Well-preserved terrestrial and aquatic vertebrates and arthropods were embedded in rapidly deposited calcareous mud conducive to microbial early-diagenesis of vertebrate soft tissues in a tidal estuarine setting. Many vertebrate fossils show no evidence of preburial decay or disarticulation. Dark-coloured body silhouettes (‘skin preservation’) are composed of calcitic bacteria, calcite crystals and organic material, and have been interpreted to reflect preservation under saline conditions. The aquatic vertebrates had a broader tolerance of salinity than today. The fishes were perhaps migratory (anadromous or catadromous), and some used the estuarine environment for spawning. The tetrapods (dissorophid amphibians) retained their tolerance to salinity from their marine ancestors and were able to spawn in near-shore environments. The terrestrial biota was dominated by the conifer Walchia and was subjected to forest fires, as evidenced by preserved charcoal fragments.
