Les liens entre psychiatrie et cultures sont très anciens.

Il reste certain que les modalités d’expression de la souffrance psychologique et de la sémiologie psychiatrique sont étroitement liées au contexte culturel dans lequel vit le sujet. La tolérance de la société devant une maladie mentale est très variable d’un pays à un autre. Le changement dans l’environnement peut être à l’origine d’une modification dans l’expression de la pathologie. Par exemple l’urbanicité augmente le risque de schizophrénie et les populations migrantes sont plus exposées à des souffrances et des pathologies authentiques. Le contexte social et religieux a une influence certaine sur la fréquence et l’expression de la maladie mentale.

Des données épidémiologiques plus récentes ont confirmé de façon indiscutable que l’expression de la maladie mentale était la résultante de facteurs génétiques et environnementaux qui sont en interaction les uns avec les autres.

À ce titre, l’expérience des psychiatres maghrébins est importante pour mieux connaître les liens entre la psychiatrie et les différentes cultures.

Cette session sera l’occasion pour nos collègues des différents pays du Maghreb de nous parler de leur expérience.

Cultural background is an important variable influencing neuropsychological performance. Multinational projects usually involve gathering data from participants from different countries and/or different cultures. Little is known about the influence of culture on neuropsychological testing results in children and especially in European children. The objectives of this study were to compare neuropsychological performance of children from six European countries (Belgium, Germany, Italy, The Netherlands, Poland and Spain) using a comprehensive neuropsychological battery and to apply a statistical procedure to reduce the influence of country/cultural differences in neuropsychological performance. As expected, the results demonstrated differences in neuropsychological performance among children of the six countries involved. Cultural differences remained after adjusting for other confounders related to neuropsychological execution, such as sex, type of delivery, maternal age, gestational age and maternal educational level. Differences between countries disappeared and influence of culture was considerably reduced when standardised scores by country and sex were used. These results highlight the need for developing specific procedures to compare neuropsychological performance among children from different cultures to be used in multicentre studies.

A survey of the worldwide litterature reveals that the question “Are we alone in the Universe?” has been formulated only in the “western” litterature. Here I try to understand why it is so. To investigate this problem it is first necessary to clarify what western culture means.

To date, among the hundred or so minor planets we discovered with various instruments around the world, twenty of these objects have been definitively numbered and named. We have choosen the names according to our centers of interest. In honouring people in domains as varied as astronomy, astronautics, music, paleontology, comic strips, . . . we had the opportunity of establishing fruitful relationships with a large horizon of cultures. It was also a good opportunity for the diffusion of astronomy towards other communities.

Benthic foraminifera are used as potential bio-indicators of pollution due to the “Erika” oil spill. The foraminiferal assemblages from a site situated on the tidal mudflat of the southern Bay of Bourgneuf (Vendée, France) have been sampled 19 times on a monthly/bimonthly scale. The field study reveals uncommon low densities and poor faunas in the first 21 months of the survey. In order to understand the effect of the “Erika” fuel, foraminiferal cultures with 0 to 72.0 mg per 100 ml of “Erika” oil were maintained in controlled conditions in the laboratory. In the laboratory, an experiment with 5.5 mg per 100 ml of oil shows morphological abnormalities, cellular modifications and a low rate of reproduction. These first results confirm the potential toxicity of the fuel No. 2 from “Erika” and the sensitivity of foraminifera to this pollutant.

In emergency situations, mortality rates are critical indicators of a population's health status. When surveillance systems are not yet functioning or cannot be implemented, rates can be derived from data collected in populationbased, cross-sectional surveys.

Deficits in planning, self-regulation and attention are a relatively common consequence of traumatic brain injury (TBI). Such “dysexecutive” deficits tend to be most exposed in complex, real world situations. Consequently, clinicians often have to rely on interviews, questionnaires and observation in their assessments. While there is little doubt that dysexecutive symptoms occur across different cultures, the expression of those symptoms, the way in which they are experienced by others, and the propensity of friends/relatives to report negative features may vary considerably. The cross-cultural use of standardized checklists and measures that have predominantly been studied with English speaking, Western groups therefore requires empirical support. Here a group of 68 healthy Chinese speaking volunteers were asked to complete translations of 2 UK developed questionnaires (the Dysexecutive Questionnaire and Cognitive Failures Questionnaire) measures and to perform 2 “executive” tasks (The Six Elements Test and the Tower of Hanoi). Their self ratings and the ratings of close relatives were very close to those seen in the original UK standardization samples—as was their performance on the 2 tasks. Accordingly, the conditions for assessing their clinical sensitivity were met. Comparison between 30 Chinese patients with TBI and matched controls showed that both questionnaires and tests were sensitive to the deficits in this group. (JINS, 2002, 8, 771–780.)

In the major breeding areas of tropical migratory locust, Locusta migratoria migratorioides (R. & F.) in Mali, Chad, Sudan and Madagascar, man has played a vital role in maintaining locust numbers above the levels found in undisturbed environments, through his agricultural and pastoral activities. Recent rapid agricultural development, particularly broad-acre cultivation of mono-cotyledonous summer crops in areas climatically suitable for migratory locust, has caused population upsurges in new areas, which have occasionally led to outbreaks and plagues. Some outbreaks appear to have been a reaction to the initial disturbance and have never recurred while others recur when meteorological conditions are favourable. Continued agricultural development in tropical and sub-tropical areas of the Old World will bring the risk of further upsurges of tropical migratory locust.
