This chapter explores the unique relationship between music and individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). It highlights the remarkable musical abilities often found in people with autism, contrasting with their challenges in social interaction and communication. Research shows that music can serve as a bridge, facilitating social interaction and emotional expression for those on the spectrum. Brain imaging studies reveal how brain regions typically associated with language processing are activated in autistic individuals when they engage with music. This suggests that music may offer an alternative pathway for communication and emotional understanding. The chapter also discusses the therapeutic applications of music for individuals with autism, such as auditory-motor mapping training (AMMT), which has shown promise in improving verbal communication and social skills. Music therapy can also foster emotional expression, social connection, and a sense of belonging. The chapter concludes by emphasizing the importance of understanding and embracing the individual’s musical preferences and strengths in order to support their development and well-being.
Clothes are much more than just what we put on in the morning. They express our identity; they can be an independent statement or the result of coercion; and they have deeply entrenched historical, political, and social aspects. Kate Moran explores the connections between clothes and philosophy, showing how clothes can illustrate and pose philosophical problems, and how philosophical ideas influence clothing. She discusses what it might mean for an article of clothing to be beautiful; how we communicate with clothes; how we use clothes to navigate our social existence; and how our social existence leaves its mark on our clothes. She also considers the curious relationship between philosophers and children's clothes, legal restrictions on clothing, textile waste, and labor conditions of textile workers. Her absorbing and engaging portrait of our clothes helps us to understand an important and underexplored aspect of our lives.
This study investigates the impact of communication delays and recruitment selection stages on candidates’ perceptions of fairness and recruitment selection outcomes and explores the moderating role of employability. Employing a mixed-method approach across two independent studies involving 264 and 259 mid-level position candidates, two variables – communication timeliness and recruitment stages – are manipulated, while employability is investigated as a moderating variable. Our results indicate that timely communication of rejection, especially during the initial selection stages, significantly enhances candidates’ satisfaction, fairness perceptions, intentions to reapply, and intentions to recommend the organisation to others. Employability moderates the relationship between perceived fairness and recruitment outcomes, strongly influencing the likelihood of peer referrals and reapplication intentions. These findings underscore the importance of strategic communication management in recruitment selection processes to enhance employer branding and the job candidate experience.
Effective communication during specialist palliative care (PC) referral is linked to improved health outcomes. Initiating a conversation about PC is difficult and poor communication can lead to stigma. The aim of this descriptive phenomenological study was to explore the communication experiences of persons referred to specialist PC services and their carers and explore strategies to improve such experiences.
Methods
Purposive sampling was used to recruit 17 participants who were either receiving specialist PC and/or caring for someone who was receiving specialist PC. Participants were recruited from a hospice. Inductive thematic analysis was conducted.
Results
Four themes were identified: (i) The why, who, what, when, where, and how of PC referral; (ii) initial thoughts and feelings about referral to PC; (iii) enhancing the communication of PC referral; and (iv) addressing practical needs during PC referral. Participants were referred either through their general practitioner or oncologist. Initially, participants linked PC referral to death. This perception changed when participants started availing of the services. Compassion, empathy, hope, privacy, in-person communication, individualized referral, and information dosing were identified as building blocks for effective communication. Participants stressed the importance of raising public awareness of PC and addressing the practical needs of individuals being referred.
Significance of results
The communication of PC referral should be tailored to meet the individual needs of patients and carers. Delivering clear and simple information is important to help patients and carers understand and accept the referral.
The Neuroscience of Language offers a remarkably accessible introduction to language in the mind and brain. Following the chain of communication from speaker to listener, it covers all fundamental concepts from speech production to auditory processing, speech sounds, word meaning, and sentence processing. The key methods of cognitive neuroscience are covered, as well as clinical evidence from neuropsychological patients and multimodal aspects of language including visual speech, gesture, and sign language. Over 80, full color figures are included to help communicate key concepts. The main text focuses on big-picture themes, while detailed studies and related anecdotes are presented in footnotes to provide interested students with many opportunities to dive deeper into specific topics. How do bribes and lobbying distort judgment? In our experiment, referees are tasked with judging a worker’s performance, and awarding a bonus to workers who score above a certain threshold. We find that bribes and lobbying are both distortionary, but in different ways. Whereas lobbying increases the number of workers receiving a bonus, bribes weaken the relationship between performance and success, with bonuses mostly being awarded to workers who bribe. We discuss implications for anti-corruption interventions.

The chapter also covers important anatomical pathways, particularly the dorsal and ventral streams for speech processing, while noting that these simplified models may not fully capture the complexity of language networks. The chapter concludes by acknowledging the challenges in precisely labeling brain regions and the complementary nature of different naming conventions, setting the stage for deeper exploration of language neuroscience in subsequent chapters.
This chapter highlights several aspects of human communication that rely on brain regions outside the traditional fronto-temporal language network. Factors affecting the neural resources needed for communication include the task demands (including acoustic or linguistic aspects), and abilities of individual listeners. When speech is acoustically challenging, as may happen due to background noise or hearing loss, listeners must engage cognitive resources compared to those needed for understanding clear speech. The additional cognitive demands of acoustic challenge are seen most obviously through activity in prefrontal cortex. During conversations, talkers need to plan the content of what they are saying, as well as when to say it – processes that engage the left middle frontal gyrus. And the cerebellum, frequently overlooked in traditional neurobiological models of language, exhibits responses to processing both words and sentences. The chapter ends by concluding that many aspects of human communication rely on parts of the brain outside traditional “language regions,” and that the processes engaged depend a great deal on the specific task required and who is completing it.
This chapter reviews the brain processes underlying human speech production, centered on the idea that a talker wants to communicate through to the execution of a motor plan. Cortical regions associated with motor control –including premotor cortex, supplemental motor area, and pre-supplemental motor area – are routinely implicated in speech planning and execution, complemented by the cerebellum. In addition to generating speech sound waves, speech production relies on somatosensory and auditory feedback, associated with additional regions of the superior temporal gyri and somatosensory cortex. A special point of emphasis is the contribution of the left inferior frontal gyrus (including the area traditionally defined as “Broca’s area”) to fluent speech production. Additional points include speech prosody and sensory-motor feedback. Finally, the chapter concludes by reviewing several common challenges to speech production, including dysarthria, apraxia of speech, and stuttering.
This chapter introduces the idea of language as a means to communicate ideas to other people. The speech chain – following the path of language from the mind of the speaker through to an acoustic signal, eventually interpreted by the mind of the listener – is introduced as an organizational framework. Of special note, all of the stages between talker and listener can influence the effectiveness of communication. The chapter provides a summary of central challenges associated with spoken language, including categorical perception, time-constrained understanding, flexibility, and multimodal integration. It then introduces several “big picture” themes from the book: stability versus flexibility, the importance of context, bottom-up versus top-down processing, hierarchical organization, the role of task demands, and neuroanatomical considerations related to localization and lateralization.
We revisit the communication primitive in ambient calculi. Previously, such communication was confined to first-order (FO) mode (e.g., merely names or capabilities of ambients can be sent), local mode (e.g., the communication only occurs inside an ambient), or particular cross-hierarchy mode (e.g., parent-child communication). In this work, we explore further higher-order (HO) communication in ambient calculi. Specifically, such a communication mechanism allows sending a whole piece of a program across the borders of ambients and is the only form of communication that can happen exactly between ambients. Since ambients are basically of HO nature (i.e., those being moved may be ambients themselves), in a sense, it appears more natural to have HO communication than FO communication. We stipulate that communications merely occur between equally positioned ambients in a peer-to-peer fashion (e.g., between sibling ambients). Following this line, we drop the local or other forms of communication that violate this criterion. As the workbench, we work on a variant of Fair Ambients extended with HO communication, FAHO. This variant also strengthens the original version in that entirely real-identity interaction is guaranteed. We study the semantics, bisimulation, and expressiveness of FAHO. Particularly, we provide the operational semantics using a labeled transition system. Over the semantics, we define the bisimulation in line with the standard notion of bisimulation for ambients and prove that the bisimulation equivalence (i.e., bisimilarity) is a congruence. In addition, we demonstrate that bisimilarity coincides with observational congruence (i.e., barbed congruence). Moreover, we show that FAHO can encode a minimal Turing-complete HO calculus and thus is computationally complete.
To evaluate and synthesize research that has investigated interventions to train registered health professionals to effectively communicate with patients in acute settings who are establishing their goals of care, to develop an understanding of current practices and their effectiveness.

Methods
Medline, Embase, PsycINFO, SCOPUS, CINAHL, and ProQuest, searched from the date each database was available to December 2023. Forty-seven (n = 47) research studies investigating interventions to train registered health professionals to effectively communicate with patients in acute settings who are establishing their goals of care were critically appraised for methodological quality using the Joanna Briggs Institute Quality Appraisal Framework. Minimum essential criteria and scores were agreed prior to appraisal.
Results
Twenty-eight studies were excluded due to methodological quality. The 19 studies included comprised quasi experimental (n = 9), qualitative (n = 4), RCT (n = 2), text and opinion (n = 1), and mixed methods (n = 3). From these included studies 4 themes with embedded sub-themes were derived: (a) delivery of training programs, (b) clinician outcomes, (c) patient outcomes, and (d) system outcomes.
Significance of the results
Communication training is essential and beneficial however its effectiveness depends on overcoming existing barriers, providing continuous learning opportunities, and embedding these into clinical practice. Addressing these factors will ensure that clinicians and healthcare organizations can improve patient and system outcomes. When clinicians and organizations prioritize regular, context-specific communication training, which promotes the use of conversation guides and available technologies, Goals of Patient Care conversations are more likely to be embedded in practice, promoting effective and patient-centered communication.
Up to 40% of seriously ill patients develop a (temporary) desire to die which can lead to requests for assisted dying. Health professionals often feel uncertain about addressing these topics, while informal caregivers may feel guilty and left out. Open and respectful communication proves beneficial. It remains unclear how this communication ideal realizes within the lived experience of all 3 parties. Therefore, we conducted in-depth analysis of communication strategies about desire to die from triangulated perspectives of patients, informal caregivers, and health professionals.
Methods
We conducted semi-structured interviews with purposefully sampled triads consisting of seriously ill patients, their respective informal caregivers and health professionals. Interviews were part of the qualitative evaluation of a 3-phase mixed-methods study on the effects of communication about desire to die on seriously ill patients. We followed a framework analysis approach to build communication types.
Results
From the N = 13 patients, 54% suffered from oncological diseases. Health professionals (N = 13) were multiprofessional. Informal caregivers (N = 13) were partners, children, or another relation. All in all, we conducted N = 14 interview triads (n = 3 incomplete; N = 39 individual interviews).
Four key themes emerged from analysis: (a) how open communication was perceived, (b) whether participants reported shared reality, (c) how they talked about death, and (d) their communication strategies.
Ultimately, 3 communication types were inductively derived at from these key themes. Type 1 “Between the Lines,” type 2 “Past each Other” and type 3 “Matter of Fact” show differing expressions on the key themes, especially on (b) shared reality. Specific type characteristics produce suggestions for health professionals’ communicative practice.
Significance of results
Awareness of typical communication strategies is necessary to foresee potential pitfalls such as loss of information or acting on unchecked assumptions. To reduce distress and increase information flow, health professionals should actively approach informal caregivers for desire to die conversations.
Since the 1950s, the United Nations (UN) has designated days (e.g., World Wetland Day), years (e.g., Year of the Gorilla) and decades (e.g., Decade on Biodiversity) with a commonly stated goal to raise awareness and funding for conservation-oriented initiatives, and these Days, Years and Decades of ‘…’ (hereafter ‘DYDOs’) continue. However, the effectiveness of these initiatives to achieve their stated objectives and to contribute to positive conservation outcomes is unclear. Here we used a binary analysis change model to evaluate the effectiveness of UN conservation-oriented DYDOs observed between 1974 and 2020. We also examined four case studies to understand the different strategies employed to meet specified conservation goals. We found that DYDOs apparently contributed to positive conservation outcomes when they were tied to social media campaigns and/or when they were strategically situated in current events or global discourse. Although the outcomes of DYDOs were varied, those with longer timescales and those that engaged local communities were more likely to be successful. We suggest that DYDO organizers should identify all possible paths of action through the lens of the change model outlined in this paper to strengthen the value and effectiveness of these initiatives in the future. Using this approach could help ensure that resources are used efficiently and effectively, and that initiatives yield positive conservation outcomes that benefit people and nature.
The highly popular belief that rent-control leads to an increase in the amount of affordable housing is in contradiction with ample empirical evidence and congruent theoretical explanations. It can therefore be qualified as a misconception. We present the results of a preregistered on-line experiment in which we study how to dispel this misconception using a refutational approach in two different formats, a video and a text. We find that the refutational video has a significantly higher positive impact on revising the misconception than a refutational text. This effect is driven by individuals who initially agreed with it and depart from it after the treatment. The refutational text, in turn, does not have a significant impact relative to a non-refutational text. Higher cognitive reflective ability is positively associated with revising beliefs in all interventions. Our research shows that visual communication effectively reduces the gap between scientific economic knowledge and the views of citizens.
We report evidence from an experiment where an employer selects one of two workers to perform a task for a fixed compensation. Workers differ in their ability. The employer’s payoff depends on the worker’s ability and on a non-contractible effort that the worker exerts once employed. We find that selected workers exert an effort higher than the minimum enforceable one. When the employers can send a free-text form message to the selected worker, workers with low ability exert significantly higher effort than the workers with high ability. The difference in effort overcompensates the difference in ability.
This study investigates the mechanisms driving the effectiveness of free-form communication in promoting cooperation within a sequential social dilemma game. We hypothesize that the self-constructing nature of free-form communication enhances the sincerity of messages and increases the disutility of dishonoring promises. Our experimental results demonstrate that free-form messages outperform both restricted promises and treatments where subjects select and use previously constructed free-form messages. Interestingly, we find that selected free-form messages and restricted promises achieve similar levels of cooperation. We observe that free-form messages with higher sincerity increase the likelihood of high-price and high-quality choices, thereby promoting cooperation. These messages frequently include promises and honesty, while threats do not promote cooperation. Our findings emphasize the crucial role of the self-constructed nature of free-form messages in promoting cooperation, exceeding the impact of message content compared to restricted communication protocols.
Within-group communication in competitive coordination games has been shown to increase competition between groups and lower efficiency. This study further explores potentially harmful effects of communication, by addressing the questions of (1) asymmetric communication and (2) the endogenous emergence of communication. Our theoretical analysis provides testable hypotheses regarding the effect of communication on competitive behavior and efficiency. We test these predictions using a laboratory experiment. The experiment shows that although asymmetric communication is not as harmful as symmetric communication, it leads to more aggressive competition and lower efficiency relative to the case when neither group can communicate. Moreover, groups vote to endogenously establish communication channels even though they would earn higher payoffs if jointly they chose to restrict within-group communication.
We conducted a laboratory experiment to study the effects of communication in a dictator game, while maintaining subjects’ anonymity. In the experiment, the recipient has an opportunity to state a payoff-irrelevant request for his/her share before the dictator dictates his/her offer. We found that the independence hypothesis that voice does not matter is rejected. In particular, if the request is for less than half of the pie, the dictator's offer increases as the recipient's request increases. Additionally, there is no dictator who is other-regarding and, at the same time, does not react to the recipient's request.
The present study explores the value of machine learning techniques in the classification of communication content in experiments. Previously human-coded datasets are used to both train and test algorithm-generated models that relate word counts to categories. For various games, the computer models of the classification are able to match out-of-sample the human classification to a considerable extent. The analysis raises hope that the substantial effort going into such studies can be reduced by using computer algorithms for classification. This would enable a quick and replicable analysis of large-scale datasets at reasonable costs and widen the applicability of such approaches. The paper gives an easily accessible technical introduction into the computational method.
