The asymptotic behaviour of many locally branching epidemic models can, at least to first order, be deduced from the limit theory of two branching processes. The first is Whittle's (1955) branching approximation to the early stages of the epidemic, the phase in which approximately exponential growth takes place. The second is the susceptibility approximation; the backward branching process that approximates the history of the contacts that would lead to an individual becoming infected. The simplest coupling arguments for demonstrating the closeness of these branching process approximations do not keep the processes identical for quite long enough. Thus, arguments showing that the differences are unimportant are also needed. In this paper we show that, for some models, couplings can be constructed that are sufficiently accurate for this extra step to be dispensed with.

Both small-world models of random networks with occasional long-range connections and gossip processes with occasional long-range transmission of information have similar characteristic behaviour. The long-range elements appreciably reduce the effective distances, measured in space or in time, between pairs of typical points. In this paper we show that their common behaviour can be interpreted as a product of the locally branching nature of the models. In particular, it is shown that both typical distances between points and the proportion of space that can be reached within a given distance or time can be approximated by formulae involving the limit random variable of the branching process.

We study the array of point-to-point distances in random regular graphs equipped with exponential edge lengths. We consider the regime where the degree is kept fixed while the number of vertices tends to ∞. The marginal distribution of an individual entry is now well understood, thanks to the work of Bhamidi, van der Hofstad and Hooghiemstra (2010). The purpose of this note is to show that the whole array, suitably recentered, converges in the weak sense to an explicit infinite random array. Our proof consists in analyzing the invasion of the network by several mutually exclusive flows emanating from different sources and propagating simultaneously along the edges.

Branching process approximation to the initial stages of an epidemicprocess has been used since the 1950's as a technique for providing stochastic counterparts to deterministic epidemic threshold theorems.One way of describing the approximation is to construct both branching and epidemic processes on the same probability space, insuch a way that their paths coincide for as long as possible. Inthis paper, it is shown, in the context of a Markovian model of parasiticinfection, that coincidence can be achieved with asymptotically high probability until MN infections have occurred, as long asMN = o(N 2/3), where N denotes the total number of hosts.
