The third chapter is the first to exclusively address core linguistic issues by comparison of the ancient Indian and modern Western traditions. It addresses rule interaction, an issue which has been a core topic of research in Pāṇinian linguistics, and which has also been a central issue in the development of modern phonological theory, in many respects driving theoretical developments over the last fifty years. A central focus is on the Elsewhere Principle, also known as 'Pāṇini's principle', and on the outworking of this fundamental principle in different phonological theories including Lexical Phonology, Declarative Phonology and Optimality Theory.

This chapter starts by describing key findings from the late 1960s - blocking, contingency effects, and relative cue validity - that were obtained by Leon Kamin, Bob Rescorla, and Allan Wagner from experiments on discrimination learning and fear conditioning. These led to a major shift in the way learning by animals was studied. Instead of concentrating on how their behavior changed, it took such changes as an index of what associations the animals had formed. An important example of this shift was the body of experiments on second-order conditioning and related topics carried out by Rescorla and his students. A number of theories of associative learning that were developed in the 1970s, notably the Rescorla-Wagner theory and Wagners subsequent SOP model, have remained influential for over 50 years. In the early 1980s an important distinction was drawn between actions, which are sensitive to their consequences, and automatic habits.

Clinical examples of normal results obtained during repetitive nerve stimulation are given. These are followed by illustrations of the findings obtained from patients with myasthenia gravis or myasthenic syndrome. The different underlying pathophysiologies are discussed. A clinical case of pseudofacilitation is also included. The principles underlying the technique of voluntary single-fibre electromyography are described. Diagrams are also included to show how jitter measurements are made and how these are increased in neuromuscular transmission disorders. In severe cases transmission may fail, so-called blocking. Good clinical examples are included of normal jitter and of increased jitter with blocking.

Chapter 1 examines London’s Rose Theatre (1587–1603), which contributed significantly to the development of western theatre. We explore Marlowe’s Doctor Faustus in the intimacy of the Rose against his large-scale imagined worlds. The Rose was located very near the Globe Theatre, best known for William Shakespeare’s plays. The virtual-reality model of the Rose highlights physical proximity as a key factor in this intimate amphitheatre. The chapter takes readers through blocking and how a virtual model can determine possibilities for movement and action on this stage, against both a physical and metaphysical attention to subjectivity, as audience members were shifting from the end of the medieval era into the early modern era. In this polygonal cauldron-like venue, Doctor Faustus rehearses the profound shifts of subjectivity from God-centred to human-centred. The performance laboratory research conducted in the virtual amphitheatre demonstrates a convergence of multiple theatrical forms, philosophical ideas, and audiences.

This chapter offers a first introduction to morphological theory by looking at several important theoretical debates. We begin by looking at the nature of morphological rules through the lens oftwo models: Item and Arrangement versus Item and Process models. We then consider the issue of lexical integrity, whether rules of syntax and rules of morphology can interact with each other. We consider the problem of blocking, competition, and affix rivalry. We also look at various ways of characterizing constraints on the ordering of affixes. We go on to look at the subject of bracketing paradoxes. The chapter concludes with a consideration of the nature of affixal polysemy.

This chapter engages explicitly with the challenges faced by any kind of comparative analysis: while the question of historical influence remains an attractive topic for discussion, we should explore the interpretative potential of differences, as opposed to the similarities on which comparative studies tend to focus. An appreciation of differences may help us to see how one culture may be ‘receptive’ to some aspects of other tradition, while blocking others, perhaps because they are not in line with its established norms. The discussion thus examines those aspects of Anatolian and Syrian Storm Gd mythology that, unlike the central elements of the Song of Emergence, seem not to have been adopted in early Greek sources, in particular the myth of the Storm God’s conflict with the Sea, and reflects on the likely reasons that explain this apparent ‘blocking’.

Pavlov viewed conditioning as a simple process in which associations are formed between brain centers that are active at the same time. Research on preparedness, contingency, and blocking challenged this view, suggesting that conditioning also depends on whether the CS is a good predictor of the US. A further challenge came from Tolman, who viewed conditioning as a sophisticated process in which we form expectations about forthcoming events. Both views may be right, as in the course of evolution a relatively simpe associative system may have been supplemented by a more sophisticated cognitive one. A third theory of conditioning, the Rescorla-Wagner model, focuses on the strength of conditioning, suggesting that how much conditioning occurs on any trial depends on how surprised we are by the US. More formally, they proposed that conditioning depends on the difference between the current strength of the CS and its maximum possible strength. Using just a single simple equation, their model is able to account for a remarkable number of properties of conditioning, and has also predicted some surprising new ones—for example, that in some circumstances paring a CS with a painful shock can reduce fear rather than increasing it.

The trap is the illusion of accumen, which makes us believe that our thinking about the challenge at hand is already accurate, even though we might only follow our intuition or deliberation. This is aggravated by the difficulty of obtaining good feedback in a “wicked” learning environment, where there are no incentives to disclose valuable information when the transaction is concluded. Together, the three illusions can block our advance in learning to negotiate. Because we have correctly learned something (such as one side of the Yin & Yang, some of the tools from the toolkit, one method of thinking), realizing that its opposite can also be true is very difficult.

An explanation of the purpose of this book, highlighting what lies ahead. When I worked as a negotiator in international business transactions, I found much existing advice to be one-sided, focusing either on the win–win or the win–lose side of contracts when in reality most transactions consist of both. Part I: The basic paradox of the negotiation task means that we have to work with and against the other side. Because both sides face the paradox, they are jointly facing a dilemma: Their success is the result of their own choices as well as those of the other side. This leads to the third and deepest challenge: The ambivalence of thinking. Negotiators have to follow their own intuition as well as thinking deliberately to master the triple challenge of negotiation success. Part II: Each challenge sets up a specific trap for the learner. But if we identify these traps, they can turn into the three steps of negotiation learning, as Part III shows.
