The present paper investigates the propagation of Love-type waves in an initially stressed heterogeneous fibre-reinforced layer with corrugated boundary surfaces, lying over a viscoelastic half-space under hydrostatic state of stress. The dispersion relation is obtained in closed form and found to be in well-agreement with the classical Love wave equation. The substantial effect of reinforcement, position and undulation parameters (i.e. corrugation), heterogeneity, horizontal initial stress and hydrostatic state of stress are discussed briefly. It is established through comparative study that reinforced layer supports more to phase velocity of Love-type wave as compare to reinforced free layer.

A traceless variant of the Johnson-Segalman viscoelastic model is presented and appliedto blood flow simulations. The viscoelastic extra stress tensor is decomposed into itstraceless (deviatoric) and spherical parts, leading to a reformulation of the classicalJohnson-Segalman model. The equivalence of the two models is established comparing modelpredictions for simple test cases. The new model is validated using several 2D benchmarkproblems, designed to reproduce difficulties that arise in the simulation of blood flow inblood vessels or medical devices. The structure and behaviour of the new model arediscussed and the future use of the new model in envisioned, both on the theoretical andnumerical perspectives.

We develop a stable finite difference approximation of the three-dimensional viscoelastic wave equation. The material model is a super-imposition of N standard linear solid mechanisms, which commonly is used in seismology to model a material with constant quality factor Q. The proposed scheme discretizes the governing equations in second order displacement formulation using 3N memory variables, making it significantly more memory efficient than the commonly used first order velocity-stress formulation. The new scheme is a generalization of our energy conserving finite difference scheme for the elastic wave equation in second order formulation [SIAM J. Numer. Anal., 45 (2007), pp. 1902-1936]. Our main result is a proof that the proposed discretization is energy stable, even in the case of variable material properties. The proof relies on the summation-by-parts property of the discretization. The new scheme is implemented with grid refinement with hanging nodes on the interface. Numerical experiments verify the accuracy and stability of the new scheme. Semi-analytical solutions for a half-space problem and the LOH.3 layer over half-space problem are used to demonstrate how the number of viscoelastic mechanisms and the grid resolution influence the accuracy. We find that three standard linear solid mechanisms usually are sufficient to make the modeling error smaller than the discretization error.

In this study, an analysis has been performed for heat and mass transfer of a steady laminar boundarylayer flow of an electrically conducting fluid with radiation effect of second grade subject to suction and to a transverse uniform magnetic field past a stretching sheet. Parameters Gr, Gc, Nr, M, Sc represent the dominance of the buoyant effect, radiative effect, magnetic effect and mass transfer effect which have presented in governing equations, respectively. The similar transformation and the finite-difference method have been used to analyze the present problem.

A simplified stochastic Hookean dumbbells model arising from viscoelastic flows is considered, the convective terms being disregarded. A finite element discretization in space is proposed. Existence of the numerical solution is proved for small data, so as a priori error estimates,using an implicit function theorem and regularity results obtained in [Bonito et al., J. Evol. Equ.6 (2006) 381–398] for the solution of the continuous problem. A posteriori error estimates are also derived.Numerical results with small time steps and a large number of realizations confirm theconvergence rate with respect to the mesh size.

This study provides a general analysis for scattering of a planar monochromatic compressional sound wave by a fluid-filled viscoelastic spherical membrane immersed in an unbounded viscous heat-conducting compressible fluid. The thermoviscous effects in the fluid are incorporated by application of a thin boundary layer model. The dynamic viscoelastic properties of the spherical membrane are rigorously taken into account in the solution of the acoustic-scattering problem. Havriliak-Negami model for viscoelastic material behaviour along with the appropriate wave-harmonic field expansions and the pertinent boundary conditions are employed to develop a closed-form solution in form of infinite series. Subsequently, the basic acoustic quantities, such as the scattered far-field pressure directivity pattern, and the scattering cross section are evaluated for given sets of viscoelastic material properties. Numerical results clearly indicate that, in addition to the traditional fluid thermoviscosity-related mechanisms, dynamic viscoelastic properties of the obstacle can be of significance in sound scattering. The presented analysis is of practical interest in development of contrast agents for echocardiographic research with potential clinical applications.
