We report the discovery of a bow-shock pulsar wind nebula (PWN), named Potoroo, and the detection of a young pulsar J1638$-$4713 that powers the nebula. We present a radio continuum study of the PWN based on 20-cm observations obtained from the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) and MeerKAT. PSR J1638$-$4713 was identified using Parkes radio telescope observations at frequencies above 3 GHz. The pulsar has the second-highest dispersion measure of all known radio pulsars (1 553 pc cm$^{-3}$), a spin period of 65.74 ms and a spin-down luminosity of $\dot{E}=6.1\times10^{36}$ erg s$^{-1}$. The PWN has a cometary morphology and one of the greatest projected lengths among all the observed pulsar radio tails, measuring over 21 pc for an assumed distance of 10 kpc. The remarkably long tail and atypically steep radio spectral index are attributed to the interplay of a supernova reverse shock and the PWN. The originating supernova remnant is not known so far. We estimated the pulsar kick velocity to be in the range of 1 000–2 000 km s$^{-1}$ for ages between 23 and 10 kyr. The X-ray counterpart found in Chandra data, CXOU J163802.6$-$471358, shows the same tail morphology as the radio source but is shorter by a factor of 10. The peak of the X-ray emission is offset from the peak of the radio total intensity (Stokes $\rm I$) emission by approximately 4.7$^{\prime\prime}$, but coincides well with circularly polarised (Stokes $\rm V$) emission. No infrared counterpart was found.

The ALMA observations of the high-mass star-forming region G10.34-0.14 reveal the existence of three massive hot cores. The most massive of these cores, core S1, exhibits both high and low-velocity jet/outflow in the CO, SiO, and CH3OH. It is associated with water and Class I methanol masers. The core N shows a low-velocity CO outflow and is associated with an Extended Green Object, along with Class I and II methanol masers. The characteristics of the outflows and masers in these two cores suggest they are in different stage of evolution and varying physical conditions.

Intense mass loss through cool, low-velocity winds is a defining characteristic of low-to-intermediate mass stars during the asymptotic giant branch (AGB) evolutionary stage. Such winds return up ∼80% of the initial stellar mass to the interstellar medium and play a major role in enriching it with dust and heavy elements. A challenge to understanding the physics underlying AGB mass loss is its dependence on an interplay between complex and highly dynamic processes, including pulsations, convective flows, shocks, magnetic fields, and opacity changes resulting from dust and molecule formation. I highlight some examples of recent advances in our understanding of late-stage stellar mass loss that are emerging from radio and (sub)millimeter observations, with a particular focus on those that resolve the surfaces and extended atmospheres of evolved stars in space, time, and frequency.

We have investigated the spectral evolutions of H2O and SiO masers associated with 12 “water fountain” sources in our FLASHING (Finest Legacy Acquisitions of SiO-/H2O-maser Ignitions by Nobeyama Generation) project. Our monitoring observations have been conducted using the Nobeyama 45 m telescope every 2 weeks–2 months since 2018 December except during summer seasons. We have found new extremely high velocity H2O maser components, breaking the records of jet speeds in this type of sources. Systematic line-of-sight velocity drifts of the H2O maser spectral peaks have also been found, indicating acceleration of the entrained material hosting the masers around the jet. Moreover, by comparing with previous spectral data, we can find decadal growths/decays of H2O maser emission. Possible periodic variations of the maser spectra are further being inspected in order to explore the periodicity of the central stellar system (a pulsating star or a binary). Thus we expect to see the real-time evolution/devolutions of the water fountains over decades.

We report new detections of SiO ν = 1 and ν = 2 J = 1 → 0 masers in the “water fountain” source IRAS 16552-3050, which was observed with the Nobeyama 45 m telescope from March 2021 to April 2023. Water fountains are evolved stars whose H2O maser spectra trace high-velocity outflows of >100 Km s−. This is the second known case of SiO masers in a water fountain, after their prototypical source, W 43A. The line-of-sight velocity of the SiO masers are blue-shifted by ∼25 km s−1 from the systemic velocity. This velocity offset imply that the SiO masers are associated with nozzle structure formed by a jet penetrating the circumstellar envelope, and that new gas blobs of the jet erupted recently. Thus, the SiO masers imply this star to be in a new evolutionary stage.

In this contribution, I briefly review the long-term evolution of the solar wind (its mass-loss rate), including the evolution of observed properties that are intimately linked to the solar wind (rotation, magnetism and activity). I also briefly discuss implications of the evolution of the solar wind on the evolving Earth. I argue that studying exoplanetary systems could open up new avenues for progress to be made in our understanding of the evolution of the solar wind.

Over the last two decades there have been considerable advances in modelling the spectra of massive stars and supernovae (SNe). Despite this progress, there are still numerous uncertainties that affect the accuracy of models. For massive stars, convection, instabilities, clumping, and our inability to model stellar winds self-consistently likely introduce systematic errors into our analyses. For SNe, and particularly for core-collapse SNe, departures from spherical symmetry strongly affect observed spectra and need to be taken into account. There are also issues with clumping, and mixing processes (both in the progenitor and the SN explosion) that need to be resolved. For both massive stars and SNe, the accuracy and availability of atomic data continues to be an ongoing issue influencing analyses.

UV wind line variability in OB stars appears to be universal. We review the evidence that the variability is due to large, dense, optically thick structures rooted in or near the photosphere. Using repeated observations and a simple model we translate observed profile variations into optical depth variations and, consequently, variations in measured mass loss rates. Although global rates may be stable, measured rates vary. Consequently, profile variations infer how mass loss rates determined from UV wind lines vary. These variations quantify the intrinsic error inherent in any mass loss rate derived from a single observation. These derived rates can differ by factors of 3 or more. Our results also imply that rates from non-simultaneous observations (such as UV and ground based data) need not agree. Finally, we use our results to examine the nature of the structures responsible for the variability.

Despite the important role mass loss in the red supergiant phase plays in controlling stellar evolution and massive stars’ final supernova fates, a theoretical explanation of the mechanism driving this mass loss has been elusive. In this contribution we present a recent breakthrough [Kee et∼al., 2021] showing that turbulent pressure alone is sufficient to markedly extend the atmospheres of red supergiants and allow a wind to be launched. The resulting theory provides a fully analytic prescription for red supergiant mass-loss rates. Moreover, the theoretical mass-loss rates computed from observationally inferred turbulent velocities are in overall good agreement with observationally inferred red supergiant mass loss. A particularly interesting aspect of this theory is that it is not sensitive to metallicity, providing important implications for stellar evolution and the so-called “red-supergiant problem” for supernova progenitors in various environments.

One significant difficulty in reliable quantification of the rates of mass-loss from hot, massive stars lies in uncertainties associated with quantifying temporal and spatial variability within stellar winds. The consequences of low-metallicity conditions for wind structure also merit continued investigation. We present initial results from ULLYSES data with the aim of identifying structure within the stellar winds of early B type supergiants with sub-solar metallicities in the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds. We demonstrate how single-epoch ULLYSES data can be used to investigate significant wind structure for these stars.

Mass loss through stellar winds plays a dominant role in the evolution of massive stars. Very massive stars (VMSs, > 100Mȯ) display Wolf-Rayet spectral morphologies (WNh) whilst on the main-sequence. Bestenlehner (2020) extended the elegant and widely used stellar wind theory by Castor, Abbott & Klein (1975) from the optically thin (O star) to the optically thick main-sequence (WNh) wind regime. The new mass-loss description is able to explain the empirical mass-loss dependence on the Eddington parameter and is suitable for incorporation into stellar evolution models for massive and very massive stars. The prescription can be calibrated with the transition mass-loss rate defined in Vink & Gräfener (2012). Based on the stellar sample presented in Bestenlehner et al. (2014) we derive a mass-loss recipe for the Large Magellanic Cloud using the new theoretical mass-loss prescription of Bestenlehner (2020).

Adequate stellar atmosphere models are prerequisite to derive robust stellar parameters from spectroscopic analyses. I will briefly review recent results obtained with the Potdam Wolf-Rayet (PoWR) model atmosphere code, which is applicable to all types of hot stars. Using multi-wavelength observations including the UV, we analyzed large samples of massive stars at various metallicities, gaining important insights on their cosmic role and the feedback to their environment.

A recent extension of PoWR allows to compose the model atmosphere from two zones. A rapidly rotating star, e.g., might possess a cooler equatorial region with a slow wind, and two polar cones with higher photospheric temperature and fast wind. For two examples of rapidly rotating O-type stars, we demonstrate that such model can reproduce wind-line profiles which otherwise would stay inconsistent. Fast rotation, which prevails in particular at low metallicities, thus might bias empirically derived parameters, having implications for feedback as well as for angular-momentum losses of SN and GRB progenitors.

Luminous blue variables (LBVs) and B[e] supergiants (B[e]SGs) are some of the most massive stars that display extreme and puzzling behavior. Their rarity indicates that they belong to short evolutionary phases or short-lived phenomena in the post-main sequence evolution of massive stars. However, their strong mass loss and episodic mass eruptions may be crucially impacting massive star evolution. LBVs are a group of evolved massive stars that exhibit irregular variability and eruptive mass loss. Various subtypes, including S Doradus variables, giant eruptions, and pre-supernova outbursts, exist. The physical cause of the LBV phenomenon remains heavily debated. B[e]SGs have strong forbidden line emission and infrared excess from dust that are thought to arise in a circumstellar disk or torus. The formation mechanism of their disk-like structures is yet to be settled. The evolutionary phases of LBVs and B[e]SGs and their connection to other evolved massive stars are important unanswered questions in massive star evolution.

We present a detailed spectroscopic analysis of the only known eclipsing high mass X-ray binary with a black hole companion, M33 X-7. We obtained the first UV spectra of the system accompanied by X-ray observations, taken at three key orbital phases. We performed a detailed analysis of X-Ray, UV, and archival optical spectra using stellar atmosphere models which shed light on the interaction of the stellar wind with the black hole. Our new analysis suggests a large reduction in component masses compared to previous results. Our one-dimensional calculations confirm that the photoionization by the X-ray radiation can significantly change the ionization structure and diminish the wind accelerations. For this system standard wind-fed accretion scenario alone cannot explain the observed X-ray luminosity, indicating an additional mass overflow towards the black hole. Our evolutionary models suggest that the system is transitioning towards a common envelope stage in which both components merge.

Line-driven stellar winds are ubiquitous among hot massive stars. In some cases they can become so strong, that the whole star is cloaked by an optically thick wind. The strong outflow gives rise to large emission lines, defining the class of so-called Wolf-Rayet (WR) stars. While being major players in the evolution of massive stars, the formation of heavy black holes, and the distribution of elements, the occurrence and nature of WR winds is still quite enigmatic.

A promising instrument towards a better theoretical understanding are stellar atmospheres allowing for a consistent inclusion of the hydrodynamics. By coupling stellar and wind parameters and the inclusion of a detailed non-LTE radiative transfer, they allow us to go beneath the observable layers and study the onset of WR-type winds. Establishing larger sets of models, we were able to make ground-breaking progress by identifying trends with mass and metallicity that deviate significantly from present empirical descriptions. Our modelling efforts reveal a complex picture for WR-type winds with strong, non-linear dependencies. Besides covering metallicity and mass, we further identify surface hydrogen as an important ingredient to retain WR-type mass loss at lower metallicity. Here, we present a summary of recent insights on the nature and onset of WR-type winds in massive stars including the consequences for stellar evolution, remaining open questions, and current efforts to overcome them.

Rest-frame far-ultraviolet spectra are fundamental to our understanding of star-forming galaxies, providing a unique window on massive star populations (MSs), chemical evolution, feedback processes, and reionization. JWST is ushering in a new era, pushing the FUV frontier beyond z=10. The success of such endeavors hinges on a comprehensive understanding of the MSs and gas conditions that power the observed spectra. The COS Legacy Archive Spectroscopic SurveY (CLASSY) is a powerful and promising solution providing high-quality, high-resolution FUV spectra of 45 nearby star-forming galaxies. The spectra contain a suite of features that simultaneously characterize the MSs that populate metal-poor galaxies, physical properties of large-scale outflows, and chemical abundance patterns. The CLASSY sample is consistent with the z 0 mass-metallicity relationship and spans 1.5 dex in metallicity. These unique properties make CLASSY the benchmark training set for studies of MSs in star-forming galaxies both across cosmic time and connecting metal-poor to metal-rich populations.

Therecently discovered massive binary system Apep is the most powerful synchrotron emitter among the known Galactic colliding-wind binaries. This makes this particular system of great interest to investigate stellar winds and the non-thermal processes associated with their shocks. This source was detected at various radio bands, and in addition the wind-collision region was resolved by means of very-long baseline interferometric observations. We use a non-thermal emission model for colliding-wind binaries to derive physical properties of this system. The observed morphology in the resolved maps allows us to estimate the system projection angle on the sky to be $\psi \approx 85^\circ$ . The observed radio flux densities also allow us to characterise both the intrinsic synchrotron spectrum of the source and its modifications due to free–free absorption in the stellar winds at low frequencies; from this, we derive mass–loss rates of the stars of $\dot{M}_\mathrm{WN} \approx 4\times10^{-5}\;\mathrm{M}_\odot\,\mathrm{yr}^{-1}$ and $\dot{M}_\mathrm{WC} \approx 2.9\times10^{-5}\;\mathrm{M}_\odot\,\mathrm{yr}^{-1}$ . Finally, the broadband spectral energy distribution is calculated for different combinations of the remaining free parameters, namely the intensity of the magnetic field and the injected power in non-thermal particles. We show that the degeneracy of these two parameters can be solved with observations in the high-energy domain, most likely in the hard X-rays but also possibly in $\gamma$ -rays under favourable conditions.

We explore the effect of anisotropic wind driving on the properties of accretion onto black holes (BHs) in close binaries. We specifically focus on line-driven winds, which are common in high-mass X-ray binaries (HMXBs). In close binary systems, the tidal force from the companion star can modify the wind structure in two different ways. One is the reduction of wind terminal velocity due to the weaker effective surface gravity. The other is the reduction in mass flux due to gravity darkening (GD). We incorporate these effects into the so-called CAK theory in a simple way and investigate the wind flow around the accretor on the orbital scale. We find that a focused accretion stream is naturally formed when the Roche lobe filling factor is ${\gtrsim}0.8$ –0.9, analogous to that of wind Roche lobe overflow, but only when the velocity reduction is taken into account. The formation of a stream is necessary to bring in sufficient angular momentum to form an accretion disc around the BH. GD effects reduce the amount of accreted angular momentum, but not enough to prevent the formation of a disc. Based on these results, we expect there to be a discrete step in the observability of HMXBs depending on whether the donor Roche lobe filling factor is below or above ${\sim}$ 0.8–0.9.

Mass-loss and radiation feedback from evolving massive stars produce galactic-scale superwinds, sometimes surrounded by pressure-driven bubbles. Using the time-dependent stellar population typically seen in star-forming regions, we conduct hydrodynamic simulations of a starburst-driven superwind model coupled with radiative efficiency rates to investigate the formation of radiative cooling superwinds and bubbles. Our numerical simulations depict the parameter space where radiative cooling superwinds with or without bubbles occur. Moreover, we employ the physical properties and time-dependent ionization states to predict emission line profiles under the assumption of collisional ionization and non-equilibrium ionization caused by wind thermal feedback in addition to photoionization created by the radiation background. We see the dependence of non-equilibrium ionization structures on the time-evolving ionizing source, leading to a deviation from collisional ionization in radiative cooling wind regions over time.

We show the application of the δ- and Ω-slow hydrodynamical solutions to describe the velocity profiles of massive stars. In particular, these solutions can help to unravel some of the problems within the winds of massive stars such as the approximation of the β-law for the velocity profile of B supergiant stars and the slow outflow wind observed in Be stars.
