A battle-axe made of picrite from the Cwm Mawr rock source, near Hyssington, Powys, UK, was discovered during the archaeological excavation of two Early Bronze Age barrows at Church Lawton, near Alsager in Cheshire, UK, in 1982–3. It had been subjected to intense heat and then placed in a pit, next to the cremated remains of an adult, possibly a female. The heating has radically altered the appearance of the axe. Originally very smooth and dark grey-green, it now has a more granular and dusty feel, together with a mottled orange-reddish appearance. The Church Lawton battle-axe is particularly notable as it is among a small number of such artefacts in Britain to have been recovered from a barrow excavation conducted according to modern standards, as well as being directly associated with an interment dated by radiocarbon: 1893–1740 cal bc (3490 ± 29 bp). It is also the first implement from the Cwm Mawr rock source to be dated in this way. An initial examination of the battle-axe was conducted in the 1980s. A more exacting analysis of the object has now been undertaken, focusing on its petrology in relation to the rock source, its manufacture and use, and its heating. The new examination included the use of stereoscopic and metallographic microscopes. This paper details the new work and provides an enhanced understanding of the implement’s history and significance, emphasising the likely connections between the Early Bronze Age community at Church Lawton and others in the wider region.

The Excello Shale is one of the best exposed and most laterally continuous of the Pennsylvanian cyclothemic black shales in the midcontinent region of the United States. Its petrology and paleoenvi-ronmental significance were studied to understand the nature of cyclic black shales in general and how they relate to the habitat of hydrocarbon source beds. The Excello is thinly laminated, fissile where weathered, and rich in organic matter and phosphate nodules; it is 90–120 cm thick. Its thin laminations, fine particle size, and high total organic carbon (TOC) content suggest that it was deposited in a quiet water environment of an epeiric sea having anaerobic bottom water. The Excello Shale consists of two lithofacies: non-bioturbated black shale and bioturbated yellow-brown shale. Petrographic studies show that the black shale contains wavy to straight laminations and that the yellow-brown shale contains discontinuous and random laminae and mottled stratification. The close association of organic matter and phosphate-controlled nodule morphology (spherical, elongated, bladed, and platy) appear to be related to progressive decreases in nutrient supply of the sea water from the ancient ocean (Panthalassa).

Clay-mineral assemblages consist mainly of detrital illite, kaolinite, chlorite, and illite/smectite (I/S). Grain size and amount of these clays increase and TOC decreases shoreward towards the probable source areas of the clay minerals in the northern Ouachita region and northern Iowa. Quartz, carbonate-fluor-apatite, carbonate fossil fragments, and minor feldspar and pyrite are the principal minerals in the Excello Shale. Minor amounts of fine-silt-size carbonate minerals are present in some samples. Limestone concretions, 90–150 cm in diameter and 30 cm thick, were found at only one locality in Missouri where the Excello is a maximum of about 3 m thick. Fissility increases with weathering along the bedding plane, and laminae are separated by a limonite film. Four petrographically distinct microfabric variations of the Excello Shale appear to be related to the TOC content and bioturbation. Textural and structural properties of the shale are more developed with increasing organic matter content.

Excavated between 1984 and 1992, the site of a large Roman villa complex at Stanwick, Northamptonshire, produced a significant quantity of sculpted and architectural worked stone. This paper assesses the various aspects of that material, including the petrological sources, and offers a new interpretation. Many items were discovered as post-packing or were otherwise reused within the fabric of the enlarged fourth-century villa, but originally derived from what were probably two earlier monumental structures dated on stylistic grounds to the early third century. The sculpture was initially examined in 1994–95 by Martin Henig and the late Thomas Blagg, whose work, especially on the large number of architectural pieces, has been subsumed into this paper and to whom we owe a debt of gratitude. Recent re-examination of the pottery in the Gloucester Roman pottery type series has identified an unusual large flanged dish in a micaceous fabric from the tilery site at St Oswald's Priory, originally published in Britannia. Petrological analysis indicates that it is of Italian origin. There are currently only a handful of examples of this type known from outside Italy, and this is the first example securely identified from Britain. The petrographical, crystal-chemical and petrogenetical aspects of rutile rich in antimony (up to 33.75 wt.% Sb2O5; equal to 0.2 Sb5+ per O = 2) from St. Marcel-Praborna in the Aosta Valley, Italy, were re-examined. These compositions occur in two different petrographical environments (within the rock matrix or as microinclusions within Sb-rich titanite) in the manganese concentrations at this locality. The new data confirm our earlier hypothesis that two distinct petrogenetical/crystal-chemical processes both occurred: 1. Sb-metasomatism of pre-existing Sb-free rutile inclusions; and 2. creation of neoblastic Sb-rich rutile by the expulsion of Ti from pre-existing Sb-free titanite being metasomatized by Sb to form Sb-rich titanite. In the literature, Sb in minerals is variably considered as being trivalent and/or pentavalent. This work demonstrates that within rutile it is entirely Sb5+, substituting for Ti4+ by the following heterovalent cation exchange mechanism which is also the dominant one in the host Sb-rich titanite: 2 viR4+ = viR3+ + viR5+, where viR3+ = (Al,Cr,Mn,Fe)3+. A near-perfect correlation of ΣR5+vs. ΣR3+ (r > 0.98) is perturbed only by the presence of trace amounts of Ca2+, Sr2+ and Ba2+. Traces of Mn4+, Si4+ and/or (OH)− might also be present. These alkaline earth cations are the largest cations ever recorded in the rutile structure and are seemingly too large to occupy normal octahedral sites. The cation exchange mechanism involved might be that found in the ‘trirutile’ mineral group: 3 viR4+ = viR2+ + 2 viR5+. Alternatively these large divalent cations may be situated in the lozenge-shaped tunnels of the rutile structure, by analogy with other large cations occupying the wider subrectangular tunnels in the analogous cryptomelane/hollandite/priderite, romanéchite and todorokite mineral groups. This leads to a possible new cation exchange mechanism for the rutile structure: 2 viR4+ + tunelvacant = 2 viR3+ + tunnelR2+.

The Little Michiru complex is a composite intrusion of pyroxenite and pyroxene syenite which is located at the boundary between amphibolite and granulite facies gneisses in the Shire rift valley. Pyroxene and feldspar chemistry shows that the intrusion consolidated from two magmatic fractions, one a pyroxenite cumulate that equilibrated at 870–1000 °C, the other a partly anatectic pyroxene syenite magma which metasomatized the surrounding gneisses during granulite-facies metamorphism and equilibrated at a temperature of 730–830 °C at 7 kbar.

Weakly peralkaline syenite ejecta within the plinian fall deposits of Agua de Pau volcano (São Miguel, Azores Islands) are divisible into (1) silica-undersaturated and (2) silica-saturated/oversaturated groups. The first group occurs in the pre-Fogo-A pyroclastic falls (15.2 ka) whereas the second occurs in the Fogo-A pumices (5 ka). The petrography indicates that the syenites of both groups crystallized at shallow depths and whole-rock geochemistry shows that they have compositions reflecting those of the Agua de Pau trachyte magmas. The syenites are inferred to be derived from solidification zones around the margins of the parental magma chamber. Mineral parageneses in both syenite groups permit distinction of three magmatic stages of crystallization: (1) an early crystallization stage; (2) a main crystallization stage during which most of the feldspar growth occurred; and (3) a late interstitial stage. Crystallization of the trachytic magmas yielded peralkaline residuals, highly enriched in volatiles, alkalis, HFSE and REE. In the silica-undersaturated syenites, the complex Zr-Ti silicate minerals, eudialyte and a låvenite-like mineral, crystallized interstitially from the residual magmas. In contrast, the zircono-silicate dalyite, and REE-rich minerals (chevkinite-(Ce), britholite-(Ce) and pyrochlore), together with thorite, were late-stage interstitial products of the silica-saturated/oversaturated syenites.

It is common practice to estimate a mean diameter for spherical or sub-spherical particles or vesicles in a rock by multiplying the average diameter of the approximately circular cross-sections visible in thin section by a factor of 1.273. This number-weighted average may be dominatedby the hard-to-measure fine tail of the size distribution, and is unlikely to be representative of the average particle diameter of greatest interest for a wide range of geological problems or processes. Average particle size can be quantified in a variety of ways, based on the mass or surfacearea of the particles, and here we provide exact relations of these different average measures to straightforward measurements possible in thin section, including an analysis of how many particles to measure to achieve a desired level of uncertainty. The use of average particle diameter isillustrated firstly with a consideration of the accumulation of olivine phenocrysts on the floor of the 135 m thick picrodolerite/crinanite unit of the Shiant Isles Main Sill. We show that the 45 m thick crystal pile on the sill floor could have formed by crystal settling within about a year.The second geological example is provided by an analysis of the sizes of exsolved Fe-rich droplets during unmixing of a basaltic melt in a suite of experimental charges. We show that the size distribution cannot be explained by sudden nucleation, followed by either Ostwald ripening or Browniancoalescence. We deduce that a continuous process of droplet nucleation during cooling is likely to have occurred.

The composition of the upper mantle bounded by the Canaries, Eastern Anatolia, Libya and Poland is indirectly investigated by means of the chemical composition of igneous rocks with ‘anorogenic’ geochemical characteristics emplaced during the Cenozoic. The relatively homogeneous composition of these products in terms of incompatible trace-element content and Sr–Nd–Pb isotopic composition is unexpected, considering the variable lithospheric structure of this large area and the different tectono-thermal histories of the various districts. In order to reconcile the geochemical characteristics with a statistical sampling model, it would be necessary to propose volumes of the enriched regions much lower than the sampling volumes for each volcano (that is, less than 10 cubic metres), or alternatively, efficient magma blending from larger areas. The data are consistent with a relatively well-stirred and mixed sub-lithospheric upper mantle, in the solid state, which is also hard to understand. This contrasts with the situation under oceans where magma blending from diverse sources and sampling theory can explain the compositional statistics.

For the first time petrological and geochemical analysis of the Marcus Favonius Facilis legionary tombstone at Colchester (RIB 200) was undertaken to determine its geological source. The results show the material to be identical with samples obtained from the Middle Jurassic quarries at Norroy-lès-Pont-à-Mousson of Eastern France. Rather than quarrying what became the more accessible native freestone outcrop between Humberside and Dorset, stone-masons based at Claudian Colchester were instead relying upon established continental materials from the Rhineland provinces. In this short article, petrological analysis has also been used to establish a geological link between this tombstone and the material used for funerary monuments at the pre-invasion legionary base of Facilis (and of legio XX) at Neuss.

Alkaline dykes tentatively dated at ∼1.3 Ga cut the Vestfold Hills in a consistent N–S to N15°E direction. They form a spectrum between more abundant ultramafic lamprophyres (UML) corresponding broadly to H2O–CO2-rich nephelinites, and alkaline lamprophyres (AL), representing H2O–CO2-rich basanites. Olivine (Fo46–93, averaging Fo75) is abundant only in the UML, but both types carry primary diopsidic clinopyroxene with complex zoning; amphibole (pargasite, hastingsite, kaersutite with up to 8.6% TiO2); titanian phlogopite (up to 10% TiO2); feldspars (orthoclase, anorthoclase, albite and andesine), nepheline (K-poor and Si-rich), ilmenite (up to 1% MgO and MnO), chrome titanomagnetite, and carbonate (magnesian calcite, ferroan dolomite, breunnerite). Lamprophyric peculiarities include the local coexistence of three feldspars, extremely Ti-rich amphiboles and micas, and the presence of globular structures and possibly primary carbonates. Some dykes carry small but abundant lherzolite xenoliths, others carry chromian diopside (1% Cr2O3) and En58–76 orthopyroxene xenocrysts. The dykes represent primitive, mantle-derived magmas which have undergone varying but generally low degrees of polybaric fractionation, together perhaps with mixing of more primitive and fractionated batches, during their ascent through the crust.

Since late Miocene time, post-collisional extension of the internal parts of the Apennine orogenic belt has led to the opening of the Tyrrhenian basin. Extensive, mainly acidic peraluminous magmatism affected the Tuscan Archipelago and the Italian mainland during this time, building up the Tuscan Magmatic Province as the fold belt was progressively thinned, heated and intruded by mafic magmas. An intrusive complex was progressively built on western Elba Island by emplacement, within a stack of nappes, of multiple, shallow-level porphyritic laccoliths, a major pluton, and a final dyke swarm, all within the span from about 8 to 6.8 Ma. New geochemical and Sr–Nd isotopic investigations constrain the compositions of materials involved in the genesis of the magmas of Elba Island compared to the whole Tuscan Magmatic Province. Several distinct magma sources, in both the crust and mantle, have been identified as contributing to the Elba magmatism as it evolved from crust-, to hybrid-, to mantle-dominated. However, a restricted number of components, geochemically similar to mafic K-andesites of the Island of Capraia and crustal melts like the Cotoncello dyke at Elba, are sufficient to account for the generation by melt hybridization of the most voluminous magmas (c. εNd(t) −8.5, 87Sr/86Sr 0.715). Unusual magmas were emplaced at the beginning and end of the igneous activity, without contributing to the generation of these hybrid magmas. These are represented by early peraluminous melts of a different crustal origin (εNd(t) between −9.5 and −10.0, 87Sr/86Sr variable between 0.7115 and 0.7146), and late mantle-derived magma strongly enriched in incompatible elements (εNd(t) = −7.0, 87Sr/86Sr = 0.7114) with geochemical–isotopic characteristics intermediate between contemporaneous Capraia K-andesites and later lamproites from the Tuscan Magmatic Province. Magmas not involved in the generation of the main hybrid products are not volumetrically significant, but their occurrence emphasizes the highly variable nature of crust and mantle sources that can be activated in a short time span during post-collisional magmatism.

Multielemental X-ray maps collected by a remote scanning system of the electron beam are processed by a dedicated software program performing accurate modal determination of geological samples. The classification of different mineral phases is based on elemental concentrations. The software program Petromod loads the maps into a database and computes a matrix consisting of numerical values proportional to the elemental concentrations. After an initial calibration, the program can perform the chemical composition calculated on the basis of a fixed number of oxygens for a selected area. In this way, it is possible to identify all the mineral phases occurring in the sample. Up to three elements can be selected to calculate the modal percentage of the identified mineral. An automated routine scans the whole set of maps and assigns each pixel that satisfies the imposed requirements to the selected phase. Repeating this procedure for every mineral phase occurring in the mapped area, a modal distribution of the rock-forming minerals can be performed. The final output consists of a digitized image, which can be further analyzed by common image analysis software, and a table containing the calculated modal percentages. The method is here applied to a volcanic and a metamorphic rock sample.

The granites of Hong Kong comprise a variety of assemblages dominated by chemically evolved compositions. They are divided into two suites based on petrographic, geochemical, and age criteria. The oldest and most primitive intrusive units are deformed biotite-hornblende granodiorites and monzogranites of the Lamma Suite. These rocks are characterised by high CaO (1·4-2·7%), and low Nb and Y contents. The Lion Rock Suite (LRS) is dominated by relatively undeformed monzogranite with subordinate quartz syenite and comprises three subgroups. Granites of subgroup I are separated into coarse- and fine- to medium-grained lithologies. The fine- to medium-grained granites are predominantly fluorite-bearing with silica contents ranging from 75·5-78%. They are characterised by high total REE, Ga, F, Rb, Nb, and Y contents and yield a Rb-Sr whole-rock isochron age of 155 ± 6 Ma with an initial 87Sr/86Sr ratio of 0·7101 ± 0·0060 (MSWD = 4·6). Granites of subgroup II comprise a diverse range of compositions (SiO2 = 63–77%) and are characterised by highly variable trace element abundances. Coarse-grained granites yield an age of 148 ± 9 Ma with an initial 87Sr/86Sr ratio of 0·7060 ± 0·0006 (MSWD = 0·1). Granites of subgroup III are moderately to highly evolved (SiO2 = 72·5-77·9%) and the silica-rich compositions are marked by enrichment in Y, Nb, Rb and depletion in Ba and Sr. Rb-Sr whole-rock isochron ages for individual plutons vary from 138 ± 1 to 136 ± 1 and corresponding initial 87Sr/86Sr ratios are 0·7080 ± 0·0002 (MSWD = 1·2) and 0·7092 ± 0·0006 (MSWD = 0·4). Granites of the Lamma Suite and coarse-grained granites of LRS subgroup I are interpreted as synorogenic I-types, whereas those of LRS subgroups II and III are interpreted as late-orogenic to postorogenic, fractionated I-types. Fineto medium-grained granites of LRS subgroup I have distinctive A-type affinities and together with their association with quartz syenite indicate a transition from compressional to tensional tectonics.

The 6845 ± 50 BP climactic eruption of Mount Mazama discharged 47 ± 9 km3 of vertically zoned calc-alkaline magma, affording a virtually complete section through the chamber. Evidence for two andesitic parents with different trace-element (particularly Sr) and water contents is preserved in the ejecta. Prior to eruption, a dominant volume of rhyodacite was underlain successively by high-Sr andesite, high-Sr crystal mushes, and low-Sr crystal mushes. Intergranular liquids in the high-Sr magmas were probably richer in water than those in the low-Sr magmas. Thermal continuity throughout the ejecta favours eruption from a single, zoned reservoir. Insight into chamber development is given by preclimactic rhyodacitic lavas and tephra erupted between about 30,000 BP and the climactic eruption. The oldest of these lavas, contaminated derivatives of low-Sr magma, contain crystal-poor magmatic inclusions of low-Sr andesite; the youngest has inclusions of high-Sr andesite and, like rhyodacitic pumice in the climactic ejecta, is hybrid magma containing an admixed high-Sr component. A model for steady-state growth of the chamber is inferred whereby repeated recharge, first by low-Sr then high-Sr andesite (± basalt), builds up a cumulate succession, while derivative liquid fractionates convectively, segregates, and mixes with an incrementally growing silicic volume. The magma chamber at Mount Mazama may provide insight into the evolution of some granitoid plutons.

The Topsails igneous terrane of western Newfoundland contains several intrusive and volcanic suites underlain and separated by screens of older intrusive rocks. The heterogeneous Hungry Mountain complex yielded U-Pb zircon upper and lower intercept ages of 2090 ± 75 Ma and 467 ± 8 Ma, demonstrating a significant inherited component of Aphebian age, while an adjacent suite of relatively massive granodioritic to granitic rocks yielded a slightly discordant U-Pb zircon age of 460 ± 10 Ma. The 438 ± 8 Ma age of the Rainy Lake complex, a suite of island arc type intrusive rocks, suggests it forms part of a Silurian magmatic episode, which also included Springdale Group bimodal volcanics (429 ± 4 Ma), and peralkaline granite and subvolcanic porphyries which intrude the Springdale Group (429 ± 3 Ma and 427 ±3 Ma, respectively). Most igneous units contain a slight component of inherited zircon, but initial 87Sr/86Sr ratios (average 0·704) are similar to calculated ‘Bulk Earth’ values at this time.

Available data suggest that the Topsails terrane formed an oceanic tract with active volcanic island arcs when obduction commenced in early Ordovician time. The subsequent magmatic history, including the major but short-lived early Silurian magmatism, can be directly or indirectly related to obduction processes, including over-riding of the Topsails terrane by ophiolitic allochthons. There is no evidence of any Acadian (Devonian) igneous activity in the Topsails terrane.

Calc-alkaline lamprophyres are porphyritic dyke-rocks, richer in amphibole, biotite, ultramark elements (Mg, Cr, Ni) and incompatible elements (K, F, P, Rb, Sr, Zn, Nb, Ba, REE, Th, U) than other rocks of comparable colour index (35–67) or % SiO2 (46–57). Field and petrological criteria are suggested for identifying them uniquely. New average compositions, based on some 600 screened analyses, confirm the chemical variability but possible heteromorphism of vogesites, kersantites, spessartites and some minettes. Calc-alkaline lamprophyres probably crystallise from volatile-rich, crystal-laden fluids. Microdioritic ‘porphyrites’, K-rich syenites and quartz-feldspar porphyries commonly form from these fluids by acidic hybridisation, and more rarely by in situ differentiation. Calc-alkaline lamprophyres have close compositional equivalents among, for example, shonkinites and absarokites, but not among kimberlites or common plutonie or volcanic rocks. They are compositionally more ‘crustal’ than lamproites and leucitites, despite some overlap. They are far more widespread than other K-rich or alkaline rocks. Three genetic petrological associations are confirmed: with calc-alkaline granitoid plutons (A), with shoshonitic volcanic and subvolcanic suites (B), and with appinite—breccia-pipe complexes (C). Most calc-alkaline lamprophyres, from association A, perhaps form by crustal modification of primary lamproitic or leucititic magmas; a very few, carrying rare mantle-type xenoliths, may represent relatively unmodified, but otherwise similar, primary magmas. Those of association B may form merely by volatile enrichment of shoshonitic magmas during subvolcanic crystallisation. Different origins for minettes in these associations are suggested by compositional differences, revealed by discriminant analysis.

Fourteen granitoid plutons studied in the Baie d'Espoir area of southern Newfoundland are divisible into a northern group of eight and a southern group of six. The former tend to be undeformed, have thermal aureoles, and intrude greenschist facies Ordovician and Silurian rocks of the Dunnage zone following a period of folding and thrusting towards the SE. Four Rb-Sr whole-rock isochrons yield similar ages around 430 Ma for these plutons, fixing the deformation within early Silurian times. The latter plutons syntectonically intruded without aureole effects, and are all foliated and elongate parallel to the regional fabric of amphibolite facies gneisses and migmatites of the Gander zone. Whole-rock Rb-Sr isochrons around 350 Ma for both syntectonic and post-tectonic plutons indicate a rapid metamorphism, deformation, intrusion and uplift of the Gander zone in this area. There appear to be no systematic relationships between petrological and geochemical characteristics of the plutons and their tectono-stratigraphic setting. This study conclusively invalidates earlier hypotheses that deformed granitoid rocks of the Gander zone are older than the undeformed granitoids of the Dunnage zone; indeed, just the reverse is true.
