Diabrotica speciosa is an important pest of several crops in South America, including soybeans. Adults cause severe defoliation in soybean plants, and damage is significant when cotyledons are attacked. This study evaluated feeding non-preference to D. speciosa adults using 10 soybean genotypes, testing (i) 15-day-old whole plants and (ii) leaf disks of 60-day-old plants, through assessments of soybean attractiveness and leaf area consumed (LAC). Foliar contents of flavonoids and nutrients, and leaf trichome density were quantified for potential correlations with soybean resistance to adult of D. speciosa. In the whole young-plant experiment, under free-choice conditions, the lowest LAC was observed in IAC 100 and PI 227687. In no-choice, PI 227687 and IGRA RA 626 RR showed lower LAC than the other genotypes. In the leaf disk test, in free-choice, the genotypes IAC 100, PI 274454, PI 227687, DM 339, and BR 16 were the least preferred by adult of D. speciosa. In no-choice, PI 274454 was one of the least preferred, similarly to IGRA RA 626 RR, Dowling, and PI 227687. In the whole plant experiment, a high rutin content and low amounts of zinc, calcium, sulfur and manganese were associated with less consumption of D. speciosa on leaves of resistant genotypes. In contrast, in the leaf disk test there was a significant influence of trichomes in soybean resistance to the pest. In conclusion, the PI lines herein assessed are also promising sources for developing cultivars resistant to D. speciosa.

Seed germination implies an expansion process restarting the growth of the embryonic axis (Ax) and which is completed by radicle emergence through the seed covering layers. In developing soybean seeds, abscisic acid in Ax (ABAa) mainly inhibits Ax growth. Additionally, the expression of the EXP1 gene at the elongation zone (EZ) was found to be involved in the promotion of mature soybean Ax growth, which increased during water incubation and which was repressed by exogenous ABA. This work aimed to evaluate (1) the ABAa and EXP1 levels at the EZ and (2) the role of the seed coat (SC) in developing soybean seed germination. Whole seeds (Se), embryos (Em) and Ax at 25–45 d after anthesis (DAA) germinated in vitro, and germination performance increased with DAA. ABAa decreased in planta from 25 DAA until its critical non-inhibitory threshold (ABAc) at around physiological maturity (45 DAA). At earlier ages, the ABAc was reached during the in vitro incubation. Concomitantly, EXP1 transcripts accumulated with age into the pool of long-lived mRNAs and were up-regulated during incubation. Additionally, isolated Ax germinated faster, took up more water and increased its water potential more rapidly during incubation than Ax in Se. Also, a lower osmotic gradient was required to germinate at 45 DAA, when ABAa was no longer inhibitory. Simultaneously, the pressure to protrude SC through the micropylar area increased from 25 to 45 DAA. These results support the role of ABAa and EXP1 in controlling Ax growth and the SC in delaying radicle protrusion.

Weed management is a major challenge in organic crop production, and organic farms generally harbor larger weed populations and more diverse communities compared with conventional farms. However, little research has been conducted on the effects of different organic management practices on weed communities and crop yields. In 2014 and 2015, we measured weed community structure and soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] yield in a long-term experiment that compared four organic cropping systems that differed in nutrient inputs, tillage, and weed management intensity: (1) high fertility (HF), (2) low fertility (LF), (3) enhanced weed management (EWM), and (4) reduced tillage (RT). In addition, we created weed-free subplots within each system to assess the impact of weeds on soybean yield. Weed density was greater in the LF and RT systems compared with the EWM system, but weed biomass did not differ among systems. Weed species richness was greater in the RT system compared with the EWM system, and weed community composition differed between RT and other systems. Our results show that differences in weed community structure were primarily related to differences in tillage intensity, rather than nutrient inputs. Soybean yield was lower in the EWM system compared with the HF and RT systems. When averaged across all four cropping systems and both years, soybean yield in weed-free subplots was 10% greater than soybean yield in the ambient weed subplots that received standard management practices for the systems in which they were located. Although weed competition limited soybean yield across all systems, the EWM system, which had the lowest weed density, also had the lowest soybean yield. Future research should aim to overcome such trade-offs between weed control and yield potential, while conserving weed species richness and the ecosystem services associated with increased weed diversity.

Policy makers and farmers in north-west Europe are expressing a growing interest in soybean production. However, cool and wet climatic conditions in this region pose challenges for this crop in terms of reaching maturity and producing sufficient yield and create additional disease pressure from the fungal pathogens Sclerotinia sclerotiorum and Rhizoctonia solani. To increase the chance for successful introduction of this new crop in Belgium and to determine the main issues for local soybean breeding programmes, 14 early maturing varieties were screened over a 2-year-period for their agronomic performance. Based on novel bioassays, susceptibility to S. sclerotiorum and R. solani anastomosis group (AG) 2-2IIIB was evaluated. The varieties tested were able to reach sufficient maturity (average seed moisture content of 19.0%) by the beginning of October. Significant differences were observed in most agronomic characteristics, with seed yield and protein content ranging from 2002 to 2916 kg dry matter/ha and 35.5–43.3%, respectively. Taller varieties ripened later but reached higher protein levels compared with shorter varieties. Tolerance to lodging was correlated with seed and protein yield but was not correlated with plant height. Large seeds corresponded with a high protein content. Susceptibility to S. sclerotiorum reflected significant differences between varieties. In contrast, levels of susceptibility to R. solani AG 2-2IIIB were similar between most varieties, with only the variety Primus showing significantly less disease. The results of the current study hold promise for a successful introduction of soybean cultivation in north-west Europe and areas for further crop improvement have been identified.

Rapid, non-destructive methods for measuring seed germination and vigour are valuable. Standard germination and seed vigour were determined using 81 soybean seed lots. From these data, seed lots were separated into high and low germinating seed lots as well as high, medium and low vigour seed lots. Near-infrared spectra (950–1650 nm) were collected for training and validation samples for each seed category and used to create partial least squares (PLS) prediction models. For both germination and vigour, qualitative models provided better discrimination of high and low performing seed lots compared with quantitative models. The qualitative germination prediction models correctly identified low and high germination seed lots with an accuracy between 85.7 and 89.7%. For seed vigour, qualitative predictions for the 3-category (low, medium and high vigour) models could not adequately separate high and medium vigour seeds. However, the 2-category (low, medium plus high vigour) prediction models could correctly identify low vigour seed lots between 80 and 100% and the medium plus high vigour seed lots between 96.3 and 96.6%. To our knowledge, the current study is the first to provide near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS)-based predictive models using agronomically meaningful cut-offs for standard germination and vigour on a commercial scale using over 80 seed lots.

The allelopathic potentials of Hope white lupine (Lupinus albus L.) herbage and herbage extracts were evaluated. The emergence and growth of cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L. ‘Deltapine 45A’), soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr. ‘Lee 68′], and six weed species under greenhouse conditions were measured after seeding directly into a moist, silt loam soil into which dry Hope lupine herbage, collected at second bloom, had been incorporated at rates from 500 to 8000 ppm (dry herbage/dry soil, w/w). At the lower rates, incorporated Hope white lupine stimulated the emergence of large crabgrass [Digitaria sanguinalis (L.) Scop.]; at the higher rates, cotton emergence was inhibited. Cotton and soybean fresh weights were stimulated at incorporation rates up to 2000 ppm, but were inhibited at higher concentrations. The growth of johnsongrass [Sorghum halepense (L.) Pers.] and large crabgrass was stimulated at most incorporation rates. Stimulated plants were chlorotic and had longer internodes. Emergence and growth of other species tested were not significantly affected by incorporated Hope white lupine. Equivalent concentrations of Hope white lupine herbage extracts were about 17 times more inhibitory to germination of cress (Lepidium sativum L. ‘Curlycress’) seed than to growth of sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench ‘AKS 663′] coleoptiles or radicles. The inhibitory principle extracted from Hope white lupine herbage was non-volatile, heat insensitive, and significantly less active in soil. Fractionation of a herbage extract suggested that neither the alkaloid nor phenolic acid content could account for herbage phytotoxicity in soil.

Greenhouse and laboratory investigations using four soils were conducted to determine the influence of seven herbicides on symbiotic nitrogen (N2) fixation by soybeans [Glycine max (L.) Merr. ‘Davis’]. Soils were treated with recommended rates of herbicides immediately after planting. After 8 to 10 weeks the nodulated root systems were assayed for nitrogenase activity using the acetylene (C2H2) to ethylene (C2H4) reduction technique, and total numbers and dry weights of nodules were determined. Metribuzin [4-amino-6-tert-butyl-3-(methylthio)-as-triazin-5(4H)-one] (0.3 kg/ha) decreased nodule dry weight and C2H4 production per plant per hour in a Convent sandy loam. Alachlor [2-chloro-2’,6’-diethyl-N-(methoxymethyl) acetanilide] (2.2 kg/ha) and prometryn [2,4-bis(isopropylamino)-6-(methylthio)-s-triazine] (0.6 kg/ha) also decreased C2H4 production per plant per hour in a Convent sandy loam, while metribuzin (0.6 kg/ha) increased C2H4 production per plant per hour and per milligram of nodule dry weight in a Mhoon silt loam. Prometryn (1.7 kg/ha) increased production of C2H4 per plant per hour in a Moreland silt loam. None of the herbicides affected C2H4 production, nodule number, or nodule dry weight in a Commerce silt loam.

A linear programming model was used to determine which crop rotations and weed management systems result in the highest net farm income for each of three farm sizes (120, 240, and 480 hectares) under alternative tillage systems. Test plot data for the years 1981 through 1988 from the Purdue University Agronomy Farm, which has highly productive, well-drained soils, were analyzed. Net incomes for no-till tillage systems on all farms in the model were consistently and significantly lower than incomes for moldboard and chisel plow tillage systems due to slightly lower yields and substantially higher herbicide costs. Generally, net farm incomes were slightly higher with a moldboard plow versus chisel plow tillage system. Also, as farm size increased, per hectare net incomes increased. About 80% of the time under moldboard or chisel plow tillage systems, the model chose as optimal the lowest of three herbicide application rates. A corn/soybean rotation was chosen as optimal on 56% of the farm area analyzed, versus 25% for continuous corn and 13% for a corn/soybean/wheat rotation.

Effects of temperature, sunlight, soil incorporation and surface irrigation on the phytotoxicity of oryzalin (3,5-dinitro-N4,N4 -dipropylsulfanilamide) were studied. The activity of oryzalin applied 4 to 6 weeks prior to planting was enhanced by covering the soil with plastic as measured by the inhibition of grain sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench. 'Sexauer G-701′] root growth. Growth chamber studies demonstrated that oryzalin phytotoxicity to grain sorghum was greater at 20 and 25 C than at 30C. The control of foxtail millet [Setaria italica (L.) Beauv. #5 SETIT] bristly foxtail [Setaria verticillata (L.) Beauv. # SETVE], redroot pigweed (Amaranthus retroflexus L. # AMARE), and smooth pigweed (Amarantbus hybridus L.), and injury to grain sorghum increased as the thoroughness of mechanical incorporation of oryzalin into soil increased. The phytotoxicity of surface-applied oryzalin increased with increasing amounts of irrigation water until it equaled the level of a preplant-incorporated treatment.

A 3-yr (1982, 1983, and 1984) study was conducted to determine the relationship between tillage and six weed control treatments for soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr. ‘Williams 79′] production on silt loam (Udollic and Mollic Ochraqualfs). Conventional tillage consisted of spring moldboard plowing and secondary tillage with a combination tool just before planting. No-tillage consisted of a foliar application of glyphosate [N-(phosphonomethyl)glycine] at the time of planting. Weed control treatments included combinations of no weed control with and without soybean plants, preemergence herbicide application only, postemergence herbicide application only, and combined preemergence and postemergence applications with and without additional handweeding. In 1982, a year of above-normal seasonal rainfall, conventional tillage had significantly greater soybean grain yields than no-tillage for all weed control treatments except the preemergence-only treatment. Yields within tillage systems and between weed control treatments in 1982 were not significantly different because adequate rainfall reduced the effect of weed competition for soil moisture. Soybean seed yields in 1983 and 1984 in no-tillage were equal to or significantly greater than those of conventional tillage. No-tillage treatments had greater soil moisture conservation and soil moisture availability resulting in less plant water stress during podfilling in periods of drought in 1983 and 1984. In all 3 yr, conventional tillage had significantly greater early weed growth than no-tillage in the treatments with and without soybean plants where no preemergence or postemergence herbicides were used. Comparing treatments with and without soybean plants indicated an average increase of 36 and 38% weed control for no-tillage and conventional tillage, respectively.

The influence of nitrogen form on bentazon uptake and toxicity to soybean cell cultures and medium pH was examined. Soybean cell growth was completely inhibited at 40 μM bentazon when cells were cultured in a Murashige and Skoog medium containing 20 mM ammonium and 38 mM nitrate. However, bentazon, up to 100 μM, did not affect the growth of cells cultured in B5 medium (Gamborg B5 medium containing 2 mM ammonium and 25 mM nitrate). Twenty-minute 14C-bentazon uptake experiments on 48- and 96-h-old cells demonstrated that 14C uptake was nitrogen-type dependent, with cells cultured in AMM medium (B5 medium containing 38 mM nitrate and 12 mM ammonium) accumulating 5 to 10 times more 14C than those in B5 or NIT media (B5 containing 50 mM nitrate). Differential bentazon uptake between ammonium and nitrate-containing media appears to be attributable to the effect of nitrogen form on pH. From an initial pH of 5.5, the pH of AMM medium decreased to 4 by 48 h. The pH of NIT or B5 medium increased to approximately 7 from 5.5. Changes in pH are likely attributable to cellular maintenance of ionic balance; NH4+ and NO3− uptake results in H+ and OH- efflux, respectively. Methylamine at 12 mM did not result in a decrease in medium pH. Bentazon, a weak acid (pKa 3.3), would be expected to penetrate the plasma-membrane faster in the molecular form at low pH. Support for a nitrogen pH theory is provided by the finding that 14C-bentazon uptake was similar for ammonium and nitrate-containing media when media were buffered.

Large crabgrass [Digitaria sanguinalis (L.) Scop. # DIGSA] control with BAS 9052 OH {2-[1-(ethoxyimino)-butyl]-5-[2-(ethylthio)propyl]-3-hydroxy-2-cyclohexene-1-one} was similar whether applied alone or in combination with acifluorfen {5-[2-chloro-4-(trifluoromethyl) phenoxy]-2-nitrobenzoic acid}. Combinations of BAS 9052 OH and bentazon [3-isopropyl-1H-2,1,3-benzothiadiazin-4-(3H)-one 2,2-dioxide] gave decreased grass control compared to BAS 9052 OH alone. This antagonism between BAS 9052 OH and bentazon was eliminated by applying bentazon as a separate application 1.5 h or longer before the application of BAS 9052 OH. A 0.2 h interval between applications of the herbicides decreased large crabgrass control compared to control obtained with BAS 9052 OH applied alone, but the decrease was signifciantly less than occurred with a concurrent application of the two herbicides.

Long term weed management programs for annual weeds should take into account seed production as well as yield losses from weeds. In this research economic optimum thresholds, determined with a simulation model, were compared to the economic thresholds derived from field studies with common sunflower and velvetleaf in soybean. An economic optimum threshold model, including a biological submodel and a submodel evaluating the financial benefit from controlling each weed species in soybean, was constructed to estimate the biological events and processes and economic costs of each weed. Long-term weed management programs were simulated in continuous soybean over a 15-yr period. The model optimized a POST treatment of bentazon by computing costs associated with weed interference and changes in estimated seedbank size. The economic optimum threshold populations were estimated to be 0.3 to 0.4 velvetleaf plants per 10 m2 and 0.4 common sunflower plants per 10 m2. The economic thresholds calculated to be 2.6 velvetleaf plants per 10 m2 and 1.5 common sunflower plants per 10 m2. The economic optimum threshold was calculated to be 7.5-fold and 3.6-fold lower than the economic thresholds for velvetleaf and common sunflower, respectively. The larger ratio for velvetleaf reflected the large quantity and longevity of seeds produced. The smaller ratio for common sunflower reflected the shorter persistence of the seeds and higher seed predation rates.

Effects of fluazifop-butyl {(±)-butyl 2-[4-[(5-(trifluoromethyl)-2-pyridinyl)oxy] phenoxy] propanoate} on cellular uptake and incorporation of 14C-leucine, 14C-uridine, and 14C-thymidine into protein, RNA, and DNA, respectively, were evaluated in corn (Zea mays L.) coleoptiles and soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] hypocotyls. Uptake of 14C-leucine in corn coleoptiles was inhibited by fluazifop-butyl at 10-4 to 10-7 M, which was related to reductions in incorporation of 14C-leucine into protein at 10-4 to 10-6 M. The effect of fluazifop-butyl on 14C-leucine uptake and incorporation was reduced by 2 × 10-6 M 2,4-D [(2,4-dichlorophenoxy)acetic acid], indicating antagonism between these herbicides. RNA and DNA synthesis were inhibited at 10-5 and 10-4 M. Protein synthesis in soybean hypocotyls was stimulated by 10-7 and 10-6 M fluazifop-butyl 33 and 27%, respectively, and inhibited by 10-4 M 50%. RNA and DNA synthesis were also inhibited by 10-4 M in soybean.

The weed control spectrum of clomazone, the influence of clomazone on the performance of other herbicides, and the performance of tank mixtures containing clomazone were evaluated from 1985 through 1987. Clomazone applied preemergence at 280 g ai/ha controlled 90 to 100% of barnyardgrass, giant foxtail, goosegrass, large crabgrass, seedling johnsongrass, prickly sida, and velvetleaf. Clomazone at reduced rates was more effective applied preemergence than preplant-incorporated for 10 of 23 weed species. Clomazone enhanced imazaquin activity on entireleaf morningglory and sicklepod in 1986. A tank mixture of clomazone, imazaquin, and metribuzin at half the labeled rates reduced soybean injury, increased soybean yield, and controlled weeds as well as the mixture at labeled rates.

The organophosphate insecticides, malathion [S-1,2-di (ethoxycarbonyl)ethyl O, O-dimethyl phosphorodithioate], parathion (O, O-diethyl O-4-nitrophenyl phosphorothioate) and diazinon (O,O-diethyl O-2-isopropyl-6-methylpyrimidin-4-yl phosphorothioate) combined with bentazon [3-isopropyl-1H-2,1,3-benzothiadiazin-4(3H)-one 2,2-dioxide], caused severe injury to soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr. ‘Corsoy′] and navy bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L. 'Seafarer′). Postemergence tank – mixture applications of bentazon with organophosphate or carbamate insecticides, or soil-applied organophosphate insecticides prior to bentazon treatments, did not interact with bentazon to injure corn (Zea mays L. ‘Great Lakes Hybrid 4122′). Technical grade malathion interacted with bentazon to the same extent as formulated malathion. Combination treatments of malathion with bentazon resulted in the same degree of injury whether they were applied as tank mixtures or split applications 48 h apart.

Field experiments were conducted to evaluate the influence of application timing of imazethapyr and fluazifop-P on rhizome johnsongrass and pitted morningglory control in soybean. Herbicides were applied at three timings keyed to johnsongrass heights of 15, 30, and 60 cm and 3-, 6-, and 9-leaf pitted morningglory. Evaluations 6 wk after the final treatment indicated imazethapyr controlled both species best when applied at the 15-cm johnsongrass growth stage. Increasing imazethapyr rate did not increase control of pitted morningglory, but did increase johnsongrass control at the 15-cm application timing. However, at the 30-cm johnsongrass application timing, increasing the rate from 0.07 to 0.10 kg ha-1 improved control of both species. Johnsongrass control with imazethapyr was no more than 64% when applications were delayed to 30-cm or larger johnsongrass. Fluazifop-P controlled johnsongrass well at all timings.

Broadleaf weeds apparently have patchy distributions within a field while POST control decisions are made assuming a regular spatial distribution. As a result, yield loss from weed competition may be overestimated, possibly leading to mistakes in choosing the optimal control treatment. Data on distribution of broadleaf weeds in 14 soybean fields were used in simulation experiments to investigate the potential for improving decision making with information about weed patchiness. The feasibility of modeling weed distribution in individual fields was also examined. Overall, the cost of assuming a regular distribution when making POST decisions was found to be low. Errors that occurred most often involved recommending more intensive control than was actually required, although in a few cases less intensive control was recommended. Error in the yield loss estimated for the uncontrolled population did not indicate the potential for a mistake in decision making for a field. Accurately modeling distribution of weeds within fields may be difficult as a result of correlations between distributions of individual species within a field and variation in distributions between fields.

The effects of soybean row width and redroot pigweed density on growth of crop and weed were studied in field trials in 1983, 1984, and Structural relationships within the canopies of soybean and redroot pigweed in relation to row width and weed density were studied in 1984 and 1985 to assess canopy geometry in relation to intra- and interspecific competition. Early in the growing season, soybean biomass was reduced in the presence of both high and low densities of pigweed. Pigweed biomass was also reduced in the presence of soybeans, especially when grown in narrow rows (25 cm). By midseason, pigweed's contribution to total biomass had reached 43% in wide-row (76-cm) stands and 24% in narrow rows. Soybean produced two to four times more leaf area than pigweed during the first half of the growth season. Narrow-row planting favored soybean leaf area production. Soybean LAI values from weedy stands were reduced compared to those from weed-free stands. Pigweed's contribution to total leaf area averaged 29% in wide-row spacing and 15% in narrow rows. Pigweed leaf area was concentrated in the upper strata of the canopy and thus reduced light available to soybean leaves lower in the canopy. Leaf area distribution patterns suggested that soybean and pigweed were competing for light even though soybean had produced more leaf area than pigweed. These relations were consistent from year to year in spite of variable water conditions.

Wild carrot is becoming a serious weed problem in Michigan continuous no-tillage crop production. Greenhouse and field research was conducted to identify effective management strategies for wild carrot control in no-tillage cropping systems. In the greenhouse, PRE applications of acetochlor plus dichlormid (5.8:1 w:w), cyanazine, linuron plus chlorimuron (18:1), and metribuzin plus chlorimuron (10:1) and POST applications of bentazon, CGA-152005, clopyralid, cyanazine, and MON 12000 provided the greatest control of wild carrot seedlings. In the field, PRE and POST treatments containing chlorimuron consistently controlled overwintered wild carrot greater than 71% at 30 d after the POST application in no-tillage soybean. Atrazine, MON 12000, nicosulfuron, and primisulfuron applied POST consistently controlled overwintered wild carrot greater than 78% at 30 DAT in no-tillage corn. Glyphosate at 0.84 or 1.68 kg ae/ha applied in October to established wild carrot provided greater than 74% control the following spring. Early preplant (EPP) applications of glyphosate at 0.84 kg/ha in no-tillage soybean gave 95 and 24% control of overwintered wild carrot in St. Clair and Lenawee Counties, MI, respectively, at 70 DAT. PRE applications of glyphosate at 0.84 kg/ha controlled overwintered wild carrot less than 69% at 58 DAT in no-tillage corn and soybean. Fall applications of 2,4-D ester at 1.12 kg ae/ha provided 18 and 88% control of wild carrot the following spring in Clinton and Lenawee Counties, respectively. EPP applications of 2,4-D ester at 1.12 kg/ha provided 7 and 72% control of overwintered wild carrot in St. Clair and Lenawee Counties, respectively.
