In separate studies in west-central Kansas, a prepackaged mixture of chlorsulfuron + metsulfuron (5:1 w/w) and triasulfuron alone or in combination with metribuzin as a sequential or tank mix treatment were evaluated two years for downy brome control in winter wheat. Downy brome and wheat responses to each herbicide alone PRE or plus metribuzin POST varied between years. Visually, downy brome biomass was reduced 32 to 79% by chlorsulfuron + metsulfuron at 16 to 26 g ai/ha and 58 to 76% by triasulfuron at 30 g ai/ha applied PRE. Metribuzin POST at 158 g ai/ha following chlorsulfuron + metsulfuron PRE at 26 g/ha and metribuzin POST at 140 g/ha or more following triasulfuron PRE at 30 g/ha reduced downy brome biomass in both years more than PRE treatments alone. Chlorsulfuron + metsulfuron at 11 or 16 g/ha plus metribuzin at 105 or 158 g/ha applied POST affected downy brome less in 1992 than chlorsulfuron + metsulfuron applied PRE at 21 or 26 g/ha. Conversely in 1993, POST treatments except for chlorsulfuron + metsulfuron at 11 or 16 g/ha plus metribuzin at 105 g/ha affected downy brome more than PRE treatments. Triasulfuron plus metribuzin POST in late fall controlled downy brome better than a sequential application in one of two years; late-fall POST was better than early-spring POST applications in both years. Despite some treatments retarding growth, no treatment in either study reduced wheat yield in 1992. However in 1993, chlorsulfuron + metsulfuron PRE at 26 g/ha, chlorsulfuron + metsulfuron at 16 g/ha plus metribuzin at 105 or 158 g/ha applied POST, and metribuzin POST at 315 g/ha reduced wheat yields. Triasulfuron at 30 g/ha plus metribuzin at 140 g/ha or higher applied PRE, sequentially, or POST in late fall and metribuzin applied POST in early spring at 280 g/ha also reduced wheat yields.

Studies were conducted to determine the effect of ensiling and/or rumen digestion by cattle on the germination and viability of several common weed species. Seed survival of grass species subjected to ensiling and/or rumen digestion tended to be less than that of broadleaf species. Downy brome, foxtail barley, and barnyardgrass were nonviable after either ensiling for 8 weeks or rumen digestion for 24 h. Some green foxtail (17%) and wild oats (0 to 88%) seeds survived digestion in the rumen but were killed by the ensiling process. Varying percentages of seeds of kochia, redroot pigweed, common lambsquarters, wild buckwheat, round-leaved mallow, and field pennycress remained viable after ensiling (3 to 30%), rumen digestion (15 to 98%), and ensiling plus rumen digestion (2 to 19%). A time course study of rumen digestion indicated that loss of seed viability often was not a gradual process. With some species, there was an initial lag phase while degradation of the protective seed coat likely occurred, followed by a rapid decline in embryo viability. The diet fed to livestock appeared to affect viability losses caused by rumen digestion. Estimates of seed survival with varying rates of passage through the rumen due to differing ratios of grain to forage in the diet are presented.

In field experiments, chlorsulfuron and CGA 131036 did not injure winter wheat. Both herbicides applied postemergence at 9 and 10 g ai/ha completely controlled flixweed. CGA 131036 controlled cutleaf eveningprimrose 81%, and chlorsulfuron controlled 91%. At similar rates, CGA 131036 was also less effective than chlorsulfuron on henbit and Italian ryegrass. Both controlled wild buckwheat 77% when applied postemergence at 18 g/ha. Neither of the sulfonylurea herbicides controlled prostrate spurge or woolly croton as effectively as 2,4-D. In a bean root bioassay, root growth inhibition by both herbicides was partially alleviated by adding isoleucine and valine.

Few postemergence (POST) herbicides provide adequate control of broadleaf weeds in potato. Field experiments were conducted at Lethbridge and Vauxhall, Alberta in 1991 and 1992 to determine the suitability of rimsulfuron and HOE-075032 for selective POST control of weeds in potato. Rimsulfuron applied at 15 to 30 g ai/ha controlled flixweed, kochia, and redroot pigweed and suppressed the growth of redstem filaree. HOE-075032 at 50 to 60 g ai/ha provided comparable control. The potato cultivars, ‘Shepody,’ ‘Norchip,’ ‘Russet Burbank,’ ‘Niska,’ and ‘Ranger Russet,’ tolerated up to 80 g/ha rimsulfuron, but rimsulfuron at 120 g/ha caused fissures in some tubers and reduced marketable and total tuber yields. Tuber quality factors such as specific gravity and chipping ability were not affected by rimsulfuron. HOE-075032 at 15 to 30 g/ha caused fissures in tubers and reduced marketable and total tuber yield of all potato cultivars. Rimsulfuron, but not HOE-075032, provided excellent selective POST broadleaf weed control in potato.

A long-term study was conducted at Lethbridge, Alberta, to determine the response of weed populations to various crop rotations and tillage treatments. Weed density and species composition differed with rotation, tillage, and date of sampling within years. Fewer weeds were found in winter wheat-fallow than continuous winter wheat, winter wheat-lentil, or winter wheat-canola rotations. A dense infestation of downy brome developed in the continuous winter wheat rotation. In all rotations, more weeds were present in zero tillage plots than in either minimum or conventional tillage plots. Dandelion and perennial sowthistle densities increased slightly over years in the minimum and zero tillage treatments. Flixweed, field pennycress, wild buckwheat, and common lambsquarters densities decreased in zero till but densities of downy brome, redroot pigweed, and Russian thistle increased. Russian thistle was not well controlled with trifluralin and its density increased in the winter wheat-canola rotation.

Dicamba and 2,4-D, which are used prior to seeding in conservation tillage systems, were applied in late fall and early spring to determine their residual effect on subsequent spring-seeded crops. The herbicides 2,4-D ester and 2,4-D amine with dicamba or glyphosate, applied 0 or 15 d prior to spring seeding, damaged canola, peas, lentils, and alfalfa. The legumes were damaged by spring-applied dicamba. There was also a slight reduction in the total dry matter yield of wheat and barley by 2,4-D applied in spring prior to seeding. All crops tested, except lentils, were tolerant of recommended fall applications of 2,4-D for the control of winter annual flixweed and field pennycress.

Improved fallow systems are needed to reduce the negative effects of increased soil erosion and reduced soil quality. Field experiments were conducted to determine weed suppression attained with yellow sweetclover grown as a green manure fallow replacement crop. Yellow sweetclover was undersown in field pea, flax, or Indian mustard and then killed in June of the following fallow year. Living yellow sweetclover competed strongly with weeds during the first fall and spring of fallow. Weed biomass accounted for <1 to 12% of the total plant biomass when yellow sweetclover was terminated in June. Yellow sweetclover residues remaining after termination of growth continued to provide excellent weed suppression. Weed densities in April before planting the succeeding wheat crop were 75 to 97% lower in yellow sweetclover than in untreated fallow treatments. Yellow sweetclover controlled the perennial weeds dandelion and perennial sowthistle, as well as the annuals kochia, flixweed, Russian thistle, and downy brome. Weed suppression was similar whether yellow sweetclover was harvested as hay or its residues were incorporated or left on the soil surface, suggesting that a portion of the weed suppression effect may be due to allelopathic compounds being released from decomposing yellow sweetclover. Results will be used to develop more sustainable agronomic practices in regions where fallow is still widely employed.
