Larvae of ~100 species of benthic invertebrates were obtained from the vicinity of Tomales Bay and Dillon Beach, California, over a 6-year period (1971–1977). This study reports on larvae of 14 species in eight families of polychaetes: Micronereis nanaimoensis, Nereis vexillosa, Sthenelais fusca, Nephtys caecoides, Nephtys californiensis, Boccardia berkeleyorum, Polydora pygidialis, Polydora spongicola, Dipolydora cardalia, Mediomastus californiensis, Ampharete labrops, Phragmatopoma californica, Sabellaria cementarium and Pectinaria californiensis. Some species were cultured from embryos obtained from laboratory fertilizations or field-collected egg masses or capsules. Larvae of other species were obtained from meroplankton and some of these were cultured through metamorphosis. A summary table is presented documenting seasonal occurrence of 60 polychaete taxa in the meroplankton.

A new species of Ampharetidae, Amphicteis fiegei sp. nov., is described from the Red Sea reef Al Fahal off Thuwal, Saudi Arabia. It is characterized by the possession of prominent nuchal ridges that are elevated from the prostomium, relatively short paleae, which are few in numbers (five on each side), and transverse rows of cilia in one of its branchial pairs. Furthermore, Samytha storchi Reuscher & Wehe in Wehe, 2009 is recorded for the first time since its original description.

In the fourth paper about Ampharetidae from Japan, we describe 12 species in seven genera. The genus Orochi gen. nov. and the eight species Amage ehlersi sp. nov., A. longitorus sp. nov., Glyphanostomum hesslei sp. nov., Lysippe nipponica sp. nov., Melinnopsis augeneri sp. nov., M. mcintoshi sp. nov., Orochi palacephalus gen. et sp. nov., and Samytha annenkovae sp. nov. are newly described. Orochi gen. nov. is characterized by the shovel-like prostomium, the high membrane, from which all four pairs of branchiae emerge and the presence of neuropodia of the abdominal type in the last thoracic unciniger. In the discussions of the remaining genera, we comment on the taxonomic changes suggested by Jirkov (2011). Furthermore, we provide a list of all Ampharetidae species that have been recorded from Japan.

A new species of Ampharetidae, Anobothrus amourouxi sp. nov., has been identified from bathyal depths of the Capbreton Canyon, Bay of Biscay (NE Atlantic Ocean). This new species is characterized by inner branchiae with transversal ciliated ridges, notochaetae from modified eighth thoracic unciniger with hirsute tips, uncini from thoracic unciniger with 6–7 teeth in lateral view arranged in two vertical rows in frontal view, fused segments II + III with paleae from SII and reduced notopodia without chaetae from SIII. An identification key for all hitherto described species of the genus Anobothrus is provided.

In the third paper about Ampharetidae from Japan, we describe six species that belong to the ‘Amphicteis genus complex’. We divide this complex into the genera Amphicteis Grube, 1850, Paramphicteis Caullery, 1944, Phyllamphicteis Augener, 1918 and Watatsumi gen. nov. Paramphicteis is considered senior synonym of Pseudoamphicteis Hutchings, 1977 and is characterized by pinnate buccal tentacles. Watatsumi gen. nov. with its type species Watatsumi grubei sp. nov. is characterized by the lack of prostomial glandular ridges, the presence of pinnate buccal tentacles, and inconspicuous nuchal ridges. Two of the Amphicteis species are new to science, including A. spinosa sp. nov. and A. taurus sp. nov. Paramphicteis weberi (Caullery, 1944) comb. nov. was transferred from Amphicteis because we found pinnate buccal tentacles in addition to four pairs of foliose branchiae. Paramphicteis foliata (Haswell, 1883) comb. nov. was transferred from Phyllamphicteis because it has pinnate buccal tentacles. Amphicteis uncopalea Chamberlin, 1919 and Paramphicteis angustifolia (Grube, 1878) are newly recorded from Japanese waters. Amphicteis orphnius Chamberlin, 1919 is considered senior synonym of A. obscurior Chamberlin, 1919. A comprehensive table with diagnostic characters of all species of the Amphicteis complex with pinnate buccal tentacles is provided.

During the Capbreton cruises (1987–1990), samples of bathyal benthic macrofauna were taken at 37 stations situated along the continental slope (480–1113 m depth) of the Capbreton Canyon (Bay of Biscay, north-east Atlantic). Ten species of polychaetes belonging to six genera (Melinna, Eclysippe, Amphicteis, Anobothrus, Glyphanostomum and Tanseimaruana) of the family Ampharetidae Malmgren, 1866 were collected at 13 of these stations. Most of these species are reported for the first time in the area. Amphicteis aff. wesenbergae is reported for the first time after its recent description and a new species belonging to the genus Glyphanostomum is here described. Moreover, the finding of Melinna monoceroides represents the northernmost record of the species; Tanseimaruana vestis is recorded for the second time from the East Atlantic after its recent finding in Icelandic waters; Anobothrus aff. gracilis is reported for the second time from the Iberian Peninsula, representing, the southernmost record of the species in the Atlantic Ocean. The potential identification of two fragments of an Ampharetinae indet as Anobothrus laubieri, a deep water Arctic species, is discussed.

Terebellomorph polychaetes are reported from hydrothermal vents and cold seeps collected in the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans. Two new species of Terebellidae, Neoamphitrite hydrothermalis sp. nov. and Streblosoma kaia sp. nov., are described from hydrothermal vents of the western Pacific. These are the first terebellid species described from hydrothermal vents. New records from hydrothermal vents and cold seeps and new geographical records are presented for nine additional species belonging to Ampharetidae, Alvinellidae, Terebellidae and Trichobranchidae. A synoptic table with diagnostic characters for all species of the genus Streblosoma Sars, 1872 is provided. Keys for all terebellomorph species currently known from hydrothermal vents and cold seeps, respectively, are included. Additionally the new combination Neoamphitrite pachyderma (Hutchings & Glasby, 1988) comb. nov. is proposed.
