Consider the Delaunay graph and the Voronoi tessellation constructed with respect to a Poisson point process. The sequence of nuclei of the Voronoi cells that are crossed by a line defines a path on the Delaunay graph. We show that the evolution of this path is governed by a Markov chain. We study the ergodic properties of the chain and find its stationary distribution. As a corollary, we obtain the ratio of the mean path length to the Euclidean distance between the end points, and hence a bound for the mean asymptotic length of the shortest path.

We apply these results to define a family of simple incremental algorithms for constructing short paths on the Delaunay graph and discuss potential applications to routeing in mobile communication networks.

This paper examines the connection between loss networks without controls and Markov random field theory. The approach taken yields insight into the structure and computation of network equilibrium distributions, and into the nature of spatial dependence in networks. In addition, it provides further insight into some commonly used approximations, enables the development of more refined approximations, and permits the derivation of some asymptotically exact results.

The exponential growth of computer networking demands massive upgrades in the capacity of existing networks. Traditional capacity design methodologies, developed with the single-class networking paradigm in mind, overlook the non-cooperative structure of modern networks. Consequently, such design approaches entail the danger of degraded performance when resources are added to a network, a phenomenon known as the Braess paradox.

The present paper proposes methods for adding resources efficiently to a non-cooperative network of general topology. It is shown that the paradox is avoided when resources are added across the network, rather than on a local scale, and when upgrades are focused on direct connections between the sources and destinations. The relevance of these results for modern networks is demonstrated.

This paper establishes structural properties for the throughput of a large class of queueing networks with i.i.d. new-better-than-used service times. The main result obtained in this paper is applied to a wide range of networks, including tandems, cycles and fork-join networks with general blocking and starvation (as well as certain networks with splitting and merging of traffic streams), to deduce the concavity of their throughput as a function of system parameters, such as buffer and initial job configurations, and blocking and starvation parameters. These results have important implications for the optimal design and control of such queueing networks by providing exact solutions, reducing the search space over which optimization need be performed, or establishing the convergence of optimization algorithms. In order to obtain results for such disparate networks in a unified manner, we introduce the framework of constrained discrete event systems (CDES), which enables us to characterize any permutable and non-interruptive queueing network through its constraint set. The main result of this paper establishes comparison properties of the event occurrence processes of CDES as a function of the constraint sets, which are then translated into the above-mentioned concavity of the throughput as a function of system parameters in the context of queueing networks.

Braess's paradox is said to occur in a network if the addition of an extra link leads to worse performance. It has been shown to occur in transportation networks (such as road networks) and also in queueing networks. Here, we show that it can occur in loss networks.

We consider two independent homogeneous Poisson processes Π0 and Π1 in the plane with intensities λ0 and λ1, respectively. We study additive functionals of the set of Π0-particles within a typical Voronoi Π1-cell. We find the first and the second moments of these variables as well as upper and lower bounds on their distribution functions, implying an exponential asymptotic behavior of their tails. Explicit formulae are given for the number and the sum of distances from Π0-particles to the nucleus within a typical Voronoi Π1-cell.

In this paper we study continuous flow finite buffer systems with input rates modulated by Markov chains. Discrete event simulations are applied for estimating loss probabilities. The simulations are executed under a twisted version of the original probability measure (importance sampling). We present a simple rule for determining a new measure, then show that the new measure matches the ‘most likely' empirical measure that we expect from large deviations arguments, and finally prove optimality of the new measure.

We explore a dynamic approach to the problems of call admission and resource allocation for communication networks with connections that are differentiated by their quality of service requirements. In a dynamic approach, the amount of spare resources is estimated on-line based on feedbacks from the network's quality of service monitoring mechanism. The schemes we propose remove the dependence on accurate traffic models and thus simplify the tasks of supplying traffic statistics required of network users. In this paper we present two dynamic algorithms. The objective of these algorithms is to find the minimum bandwidth necessary to satisfy a cell loss probability constraint at an asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) switch. We show that in both schemes the bandwidth chosen by the algorithm approaches the optimal value almost surely. Furthermore, in the second scheme, which determines the point closest to the optimal bandwidth from a finite number of choices, the expected learning time is finite.

In this paper we consider the analysis of call blocking at a single resource with differing capacity requirements as well as differing arrival rates and holding times. We include in our analysis trunk reservation parameters which provide an important mechanism for tuning the relative call blockings to desired levels. We base our work on an asymptotic regime where the resource is in heavy traffic. We further derive, from our asymptotic analysis. methods for the analysis of finite systems. Empirical results suggest that these methods perform well for a wide class of examples.

In this paper a particular loss network consisting of two links with C1 and C2 circuits, respectively, and two fixed routes, is investigated. A call on route 1 uses a circuit from both links, and a call on route 2 uses a circuit from only the second link. Calls requesting routes 1 and 2 arrive as independent Poisson streams. A call requesting route 1 is blocked and lost if there are no free circuits on either link, and a call requesting route 2 is blocked and lost if there is no free circuit on the second link. Otherwise the call is connected and holds a circuit from each link on its route for the holding period of the call.

The case in which the capacities C1, and C2, and the traffic intensities v1, and v2, all become large of O(N) where N » 1, but with their ratios fixed, is considered. The loss probabilities L1 and L2 for calls requesting routes 1 and 2, respectively, are investigated. The asymptotic behavior of L1 and L2 as N→ ∞ is determined with the help of double contour integral representations and saddlepoint approximations. The results differ in various regions of the parameter space (C1, C2, v1, v2). In some of these results the loss probabilities are given in terms of the Erlang loss function, with appropriate arguments, to within an exponentially small relative error. The results provide new information when the loss probabilities are exponentially small in N. This situation is of practical interest, e.g. in cellular systems, and in asynchronous transfer mode networks, where very small loss probabilities are desired.

The accuracy of the Erlang fixed-point approximations to the loss probabilities is also investigated. In particular, it is shown that the fixed-point approximation E2 to L2 is inaccurate in a certain region of the parameter space, since L2 « E2 there. On the other hand, in some regions of the parameter space the fixed-point approximations to both L1 and L2 are accurate to within an exponentially small relative error.

Hierarchical information networks are important in applications where the information management must support an existing tree-structured organization. Embedded computer-communication systems in military applications, with a dominant hierarchical command structure, are the most prominent examples. Also typical of such applications is the variability in message demand (both sources and intensity) depending on the external conditions encountered by the encapsulating system (the system supported by the embedded computer-communication system). Using a queueing network model for a hierarchical information network, we compare the effect of limited dynamic reconfiguration on expected transmission delays. The limited reconfigurability takes the form of apex transition among a proper subset of the communication nodes designated as the apex candidate set. Each apex candidate can assume the ultimate position under designated conditions. This network architecture is called a dynamic hierarchy. The model includes N + 1 nodes (0, …, N) with 0 identifying the apex node. We assume that message processing at each node is described by an M/M/1 model (single server with Poisson arrivals and exponential service times). Further message transfers among the nodes are served by communication links which also behave as M/M/1 queues.

Two distinctive features characterize the queueing network model:

1. The assignment of a set of weights to the nodes dependent on the hierarchical level reflects the increasing importance of information as it is transferred to higher levels.

2. The dynamic hierarchy requires a communications protocol that partitions the analysis of network delay into three periods: regular operation, reconfiguration, and adjustment. Characterization of the performance of the dynamic hierarchy entails the description of message transmission delay as a composite of the three periods.

Cottrell et al. (1983) have indicated how ideas from the large deviations theory lead to fast simulation schemes that estimate the mean time taken by the slotted ALOHA protocol to saturate starting empty. Such fast simulation schemes are particularly useful when the attempt probability is small. The remaining time to saturation when the protocol has been operating for a time is more accurately described by the quasi-stationary exit time from the stable regime. The purpose of this article is to prove that the ratio of the quasi-stationary exit time to the exit time starting empty approaches 1 as the attempt probability becomes small.

In a cellular radio system a limited number of channels are available and neighbouring cells may not be allocated the same channel simultaneously because of the possibility of interference. Under heavy traffic, therefore, the average rate of losing calls may be reduced if certain calls are rejected as a matter of policy because of the potential inference they may cause. A fixed channel assignment policy is one in which each cell is allocated a fixed set of channels, this set typically being made smaller for cells likely to cause most interference. Sufficient conditions are found for the optimality of fixed channel assignment policies for a variety of layouts, and optimal and ‘good' policies are found in a number of other cases.
