The chapter discusses the early Christ movement and early Christian literature. Focusing on the Gospel of Matthew in the original Greek, the chapter argues that the wilderness is used to sanction Jesus’ identity as the heir to the Tora/Yahweh, that it is connected to ascetic ideals and total devotion; that the wilderness is an identity-formative space for the devotees; and that the gospel’s focus is anthropocentric with comparatively little interest in the eco-material world.
