Many of the historical figures in this book have multiple written versions of their names. This reflects the diversity of backgrounds represented within this work. Often, individuals would use different versions of their names to their intended audiences. These examples are most notable in the chapters on Ireland and Egypt. An example would be Sean O’ Kelly, an anglicisation of the Irish statesman’s Irish name Seán Ó Ceallaigh. Or another is that of the Egyptian leader Saad Zaghlul, whose name is often spelt Sa’d Zaghloul or even Zaghlûl. This book has tried to retain consistency in the spelling of these names.
