Module Self-harm in adolescents: Part 1 – risk assessment and management

Young people who self-harm represent a significant challenge to professionals. Junior doctors at all stages of training will be required to conduct assessments in a variety of settings. To be effective the doctor is required to conduct an in-depth and thorough psychiatric assessment and to formulate a management plan that will include the mitigation of risk. Self-harm is a symptom of multiple mental disorders and is not a disorder in its own right. This module, the first of a two-part series, covers risk assessment and management. The second module will cover treatments and the legal frameworks. CPD credits: 1

Podcast Counter-terrorism and psychiatry

In this podcast, complementing the CPD Online module on Ethical considerations arising from the Government's counter-terrorism strategy, Dr Jonathan Hurlow identifies how psychiatrists and other mental health professionals can carry out their duty to ‘have due regard to the need to prevent people from being drawn into terrorism’, and how they can work within the Government's wider counter-terrorism framework in cases where potential risks are identified. Module Quickbite: Diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder in adults

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) has had an increasingly high profile over the last 10 years since the passing of the Autism Act 2009 (England and Wales). It is relatively common in the population and even more so in psychiatric clinics. It may present differently in some groups. This module aims to give you further understanding of how to diagnose someone with autism spectrum disorder, the criteria and what they mean in practice. CPD credits: 0.5

Module Ethical considerations arising from the Government's counter-terrorism strategy

Section 26(1) of the Counter-Terrorism and Security Act 2015 states that specified authorities, including healthcare bodies, ‘must, in the exercise of [their] functions, have due regard to the need to prevent people from being drawn into terrorism.’ It can be difficult to reflect objectively about the potential pitfalls and risks that this duty creates. In its Position Statement PS04/16, RCPsych identified that ‘for the psychiatric profession, these include ethical, clinical, professional-boundary and confidentiality issues.’ This module should equip participants with the knowledge and opportunities to weigh up these challenges in keeping with principles of good psychiatric practice.
