This book has had a long gestation. I apologize to anyone whose early contribution I’ve now forgotten.

I thank above all my partner, Esther Verheyen, who would drop everything on short notice to review a chapter, even while she effortlessly directed her genetics research lab, wrote and reviewed academic papers, taught university courses, and parented her two teenagers.
