The second annual report of the Glaciological Research Sub-Committee of the British Glaciological Society has recently been received by the Committee. The following is an extract from that report:
The Glaciological Research Sub-Committee begs leave to report to the Committee of the British Glaciological Society on the work of the Sub-Committee for the year ending 2 December 1957.
Work of the Sub–Committee
The Sub-Committee has held two meetings and has dealt with many requests for advice by correspondence. In order to assist in advising expeditions a second Technical Note has been prepared entitled “Measurements required on a glacier in a known area”, which discusses measurements that could usefully be undertaken by those visiting better-known glaciers or by those prepared to make use of more elaborate methods than were assumed in Technical Note No. 1, “Measurements required on a glacier in an area which is unknown and unmapped.” Copies of Technical Notes have been sent to many interested people, and preparations are now in hand for revising Technical Note No.1. Further Technical Notes are contemplated to deal with more specialized topics in glacier research and with glaciological research other than on glaciers.
Requests for Advice
Requests for advice have been received from one person contemplating laboratory research and from ten expeditions visiting glaciers in Europe, Africa, Kashmir, Greenland, North and South America and the Sub-Antarctic Islands, and further advice has also been given to some of those who first enquired during the preceding year; one of these has deposited a final report in the library of the Society, and it is hoped that other expeditions will also send similar reports.

Future Policy
The Sub-Committee hopes that its work in informing intending workers in glaciology of the problems worth studying and of the techniques available is proving of use, and also that more publicity is being given to the results achieved by small expeditions. It hopes to continue this work by giving advice, co-ordinating programmes and preparing more Technical Notes on other aspects of glaciology.
The report from which the above are extracts was received and approved by the Committee of the British Glaciological Society, and the members of the Sub-Committee were re-elected for the present year.
