La morphologie du conservatisme américain à l’ère Trump

Cet article vise à identifier et analyser les idées qui ont accompagné l’émergence et la victoire de Donald Trump. Nous nous intéressons tout particulièrement au paléoconservatisme, un courant idéologique jusque-là méconnu, qui a néanmoins su articuler les frustrations et aspirations d'une partie importante de l’électorat américain. Critique des élites économiques et politiques associées aux deux grands partis, le paléoconservatisme prône un nationalisme identitaire qui menace de bouleverser l’équilibre déjà fragile entre les variantes libertarienne et socialement conservatrice qui dominent au Parti républicain depuis quelques décennies.
Abstract
This article seeks to identify and analyze the ideas that have accompanied the emergence and electoral victory of Donald Trump. To do so, we focus on a little-known ideological current, namely paleoconservatism, which has been able to articulate the resentment and aspirations of a sizeable part of the American electorate. Highly critical of the economic and political elites associated with the two main political parties, paleoconservatism upholds a nationalistic and identitarian brand of conservatism that threatens the delicate balance between libertarian and socially conservative streams, which has defined the Republican Party over the last few decades.
