Preliminary new data support the enhancement of ‘everyday’ creativity among those persons with bipolar disorders who manifest milder rather than more severe mood elevations, and among certain individuals who are likely to carry bipolar liability but themselves show no clinical mood elevations – in this case, unipolar depressives with a family history of bipolar disorder, when compared with depressives lacking this history. Creativity was assessed using the lifetime creativity scales (Richards el al, 1988). Underlying mechanisms may be multifactorial and complex. Results suggest that both personal and family history should be considered when making predictions concerning creativity and affective disorders.

This study presents the clinical and demographic characteristics of a sample of 131 patients, who met DSM III-R criteria for obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Our aim was to compare our epidemiological data with non-European research, and to investigate the relationship between OCD symptoms and other clinical features, ie other Axis I concomitant disturbances, personality disorders (Axis II) and family history. Furthermore, we evaluated the age at onset distribution according to sex, family history and presence/absence of a comorbid diagnosis of mood disorder, by means of survival analysis.

Alcoholic and psychiatric family history were investigated in two groups of alcoholics, recruited differently, and controls. Alcoholics with or without a family history of alcoholism (AFH + and AFH − ) were compared with regard to professional qualifications, personal psychiatric history, age at onset and reasons given for becoming alcoholic. The results can be summarized as follows: the family ‘aggregate’ of alcoholism found was independent of the recruitment. This was not the case for personal psychiatric history for which a gradient was found in the two alcoholic groups. Rates of alcoholism were higher in both the first and second degree relatives. Alcoholics with AFH+ and AFH− differed significantly with regard to inducement by profession, and tended to differ as to age of onset.

Lateral gaze aversions which follow reflective or thought provoking questions are called conjugated lateral eye movements (CLEMs). This response was studied in 20 schizophrenic patients, 20 depressive patients and 20 healthy controls. Frontal and parietal EEG measures were recorded simultaneously with the question/answer task. There were no differences in CLEMs among the 3 groups. Schizophrenic and depressive patients demonstrated a significantly reduced EEG-power on the left and an increased power on the right in comparison with healthy controls. This may point to a functional interhemispheric ‘disconnection’ in patients. Comparative correlations revealed EEG-power increase during the occurrence of contralateral CLEMs in the whole 10 min task.

In an open multi-center study, 57 schizophrenic patients were treated with clozapine for indications of treatment-resistant psychosis or severe extrapyramidal side-effects caused by conventional neuroleptics. In 58% of the patients a clinical relevant improvement, expressed as percentage reduction of at least 50 from baseline BPRS scores was observed. With respect to extrapyramidal side-effects, a marked reduction was found upon treatment with clozapine. No major side-effects occurred, particularly agranulocytosis. It was concluded that clozapine is a potent antipsychotic agent that can be used safely when treatment is accompanied by frequent clinical and hematological monitoring.

Recent studies have examined the effectiveness of the dexamethasone suppression test (DST) in the evaluation of bulimia. In a series of 18 female bulimic outpatients without major depression, 9 (50%) failed to suppress on the DST. No significant difference was found between suppressors and nonsuppressors in personal and family histories of affective disorder, levels of anxious and depressive symptoms, psychoactive substance abuse, and severity of abnormal eating-related behaviours. In contrast, non-suppression was significantly associated with low weight. There is a trend to differentiate non-suppressors from suppressors in the current diagnosis of anorexia nervosa and in past history of anorexia nervosa. Seven patients received fluvoxamine for 8 weeks. Five patients were suppressors and showed a significant decrease in the frequency of their binges while the 2 non-suppressors did not improve. These preliminary results suggest that DST non-suppression might be typical of bulimic patients with anorexia nervosa and that pretreatment DST results might predict the response of bulimic behaviour to treatment with fluvoxamine.

A minimal brain damage examination was carried out in 73 schizophrenic patients divided into three groups according to their season of birth. Results showed no statistically significant difference among groups in the prevalence of neurological soft signs.
