Preface

The 2003 International Symposium on Snow and Avalanches was organized by the International Glaciological Society together with the Swiss Federal Institute of Snow and Avalanches, Davos. It was held in Davos, Switzerland, from 2–6 June 2003.

The overall organization was the responsibility of the IGS headquarters in Cambridge, UK, under the leadership of the new Secretary General Magnús Már Magnússon, seconded by the outgoing Secretary General C.S.L. Ommanney.

The local arrangements were made by a committee headed byW. Ammann, which included P. Bartelt, P. Foehn, F. Leuenberger, B. Miller, M. Oberhänsli, J. Rhyner andV. Stöckli.

The symposium was co-sponsored by:

Swiss Science Foundation, Bern

Municipality of Davos, Switzerland.

There were 140 participants from 19 countries. They presented 114 papers, 64 orally and 50 as poster papers, of which 87 are published in this volume. All papers were refereed and edited in accordance with the Glaciological Society’s high standards.
