This review was first published in African Studies Review in September 2017. During the copy-editing process changes were introduced to the author’s language that rendered the tone of the original submission more critical than the author intended. The Book Review editors and the author were not given the opportunity to review these changes before the review went to press, thus the need to reprint the review to allow Dr. Lal’s original review of Dr. Hunter’s work to be published in the corrected form (Lal Reference Lal2018).

The new ASR Editorial Team has put in place substantive reforms to the copy-editing process, addressed in the introduction to the April 2018 issue [doi:10.1017/asr.2018.13], to ensure all authors have the opportunity to review final copy before print. The ASR editors are committed to avoiding situations such as this in the future. In the meantime, we offer the corrected and updated text of this review as a correction. The new editorial team of the African Studies Review unreservedly apologizes to Dr. Lal, Dr. Hunter, and to our readers.
