Work of the Sub-Committee

The Sub-Committee has held two meetings and has dealt with many requests for advice by correspondence. Since the first duplication of Technical Note No. 1 was running out, the opportunity was taken to revise this note considerably, and the new edition was duplicated during the year. The possibility of further Technical Notes is still being investigated.

Requests for Advice

Requests for advice have been received from 12 expeditions visiting glaciers in Europe, South America, Asia and the Antarctic, and, in addition, Technical Notes have been sent to enquirers in Mexico, U.S.A., France and U.S.S.R., as well as in Great Britain.

Future Policy

The Sub-Committee feel that the work of advising and co-ordinating glaciological work is of continuing and even increasing importance, and urges those planning expeditions to study the need for co-ordinated and continued work following a unified theme or concentrated in particular areas. It also emphasizes again the desirability of every expedition producing a written report on its work; four expeditions have now deposited such reports with the Society, and it is to be hoped that many others will follow their example.

This report will be considered by the Committee at their next meeting, when the Sub-Committee for the current year will be appointed. Requests for advice from members of the Society should be addressed either to any member of the Sub-comittee personally, or to the Secretary of the British Glaciological Society, c/o Scott Polar Research Institute, Lensfield Road, Cambridge. Expeditions wishing to deposit reports of their activities should send them to the Secretary at the above address.
