Modern Intellectual History is pleased to announce the appointment of Professor Sophia Rosenfeld of the University of Virginia as an editor, replacing Professor Anthony La Vopa (whose career and accomplishments at the journal will be marked in our next issue).

Professor Rosenfeld has taught at the University of Virginia since 1995 and published two major books: A Revolution in Language: The Problem of Signs in Late Eighteenth-Century France (Stanford University Press, 2001), and her recent Common Sense: A Political History (Harvard University Press, 2011), which won the Mark Lynton Prize in History and the Society for Historians of the Early American Republic Book Prize. Recently made a Guggenheim Fellow, she has also been awarded prestigious fellowships from the American Council of Learned Societies and the Andrew Mellon Foundation. Her current work concerns the origins of a modern conception of political freedom centered on choice.

With expertise spanning France, Great Britain, and North America in the eighteenth century and beyond, Professor Rosenfeld is a wonderful addition to Modern Intellectual History and her fellow editors take great pleasure in welcoming her to the editorship.
