Footnotes
This paper was presented at the ICTM conference in Canberra, Australia, January 1995. The field research was made possible by grants awarded by the Australian Research Council throughout the 1990s. I am very grateful to Bp. Gesang who graciously allowed H. Kartomi and me to interview him at his house in Solo late in 1994. Thanks also to Bp. Koswara Sumaamidjaja of Radio Australia for providing me with information and several recorded versions of Bengawan Solo sung by a Japanese soprano to band accompaniment in 1947. Alex Dea sent a recording of a Chinese version. I am also grateful to my research assistants for this project, Dr. Kay Dreyfus and Ms. Robin Ryan.
