Factors Contributing to the Loss of Amiben Phytotoxicity in Soils

Abstract

Amiben (3–amino–2,5–dichlorobenzoic acid) was applied to the surface of various soil types in cylinders which were then leached with water. The leached soil was tested biologically for herbicide activity. Loss was most rapid from sand, followed by clay, with muck remaining phytotoxic much longer. There was only a slight increase in the toxicity of loam soil given repeated treatments with amiben. Incubation of treated soil for various periods of time indicated that microorganism breakdown is important in soils relatively high in organic matter.
