The Influence of Ramon Lull and Jan van Ruysbroeck on the Language of the Spanish Mystics
Published online by Cambridge University Press: 17 July 2017
Extract
The originality of the imaginative concepts, terms and symbols of the classical Spanish mystics has elicited several philological approaches. All of them try to explain or rather to account for this originality. Each of these different methods, however, is characterized by a striking onesidedness and exclusiveness of view. In order to find out where further research has to start from, it is necessary first to review the attempts of investigation made till now. They may be designated as the non-historic, the synthetic, the secular, the Arabic and the Germanic theses.

110 Obras II, 514 with the addition, however, of strophe 2 from the Sanlúcar manuscript. P. Silverio's critical text has found many competent objections (Dom Chevalier, Allison Peers). If one omits strophe 2, the poem turns to become a eucharistic poem. But strophe 9ff.—‘Aquesta eterna fonte está escondida/En este vivo pan por darnos vida’—certainly does not mean that the mystic in his dark night has the consolation to know that the fountain of life flows in the Blessed Sacrament. Otherwise Saint John of the Cross could not say: ‘Cuando me pienso aliviar/De verte en el Sacramento/Háceme más sentimiento/El no te poder gozar;/Todo es para más penar/Por no verte como quiero’ (Vivo sin vivir en mí, Obras II, 512).Google Scholar
The true meaning is that God, in the scintilla animae of the mystic during the dark night, is equally present as in the Blessed Sacrament: ontologically real but ‘in darkness’, i.e. not experienced except por fe. And the poet's longing, despite all the statements about the hidden place of the fount, is for the experienced unio mystica. Google Scholar
