1 The Tamil words used are Kuttadhikal and Nadakamadhikal. Kuttadi is an idiomatic term of opprobrium designating a person who could not be gainfully employed in any pursuit other than acting.

2 Annadural—or Anna as he was affectionately known—led the first DMK administration in the state of Madras; when he died in 1969, Karunanithi succeeded him as Chief Minister.
