Artists work several days a week at the supported art studio above Outsider Art Gallery in the Hermitage Amsterdam. This studio and gallery were set up in 2016 for people with mental and learning disabilities by care organization Cordaan, Museum Hermitage Amsterdam and Museum of the Mind Haarlem.
Cordaan has various initiatives to involve its residents and clients in art and culture.
With the Art & Care programme, we use music, dance, theatre, poetry, literature, heritage and visual arts to improve the quality of life of residents and to connect participants to society.
The focus is not so much on the disabilities, limitations and possible disorders of a person but rather on the ‘sane’ and vital part that all people have: development and celebration of artistic talent, connection with society through art.
Chez Tirza (Hilversum, 1988), Tirza de Wild
‘I have been drawing since childhood, it is really my hobby.’ Tirza de Wild has been affiliated with Outsider Art Studios since 2019 where she works three days a week. She developed her own style of painting and drawing: dark contouring lines, bright colours and a good eye for details. She gets inspired by famous people from Dutch TV and politics. These characters populate her art works in which very often she plays a role herself.
The painting ‘Chez Tirza’ depicts the team ‘Even tot hier’, a satirical Dutch TV programme. Tirza herself (yellow jacket) and her friend Esrah (purple jacket) are surrounded by the two comedians of the show, three producers and one musician of the TV programme. The scene takes place in Paris, during a party. There are French houses, flags, snacks and drinks, lavender and sunflower fields. Tirza calls herself a party animal, she likes festivals, being and working together with other people. She wants to develop herself and wants people to feel happy when they look at her art. TIrza comments: ‘I am in love with my art, it is my dream job. When I start painting I always paint myself first and then the other people around me. I am a little bit vain, I like to depict myself, I find myself beautiful, friendly and sweet. The people around me are very dear to me, that's why I paint them all very close together.
We are always looking for interesting and visually appealing images for the cover of the Journal and would welcome suggestions or pictures, which should be sent to Dr Allan Beveridge, British Journal of Psychiatry, 21 Prescot Street, London, E1 8BB, UK or [email protected].
