Would you like to write a monthly Kaleidoscope column for the BJPsych, with the aim to bring the most clinically impactful and wider content to the journal readership?

We are looking for a Kaleidoscope Editor(s) to join the BJPsych Editorial Board. This involves:

  • Researching and writing an engaging column which aims to share news and advancements in psychiatry and mental health, in line with the journal’s overarching objective; to share the most clinically impactful research with our readers.
  • Submitting the Kaleidoscope column via email within two weeks of each issue every month.


Examples of the Kaleidoscope column are linked here and here. We are however, open to the future Kaleidoscope editors submitting proposals on alternative ways to fulfil the objective for the column. Creativity and innovation are welcomed in this role!

The Kaleidoscope Editor(s) will be offered mentorship and development support. The role can also be shared (co-editorship). Please note interest in co-editorship in your application or submit a joint application.

The Kaleidoscope Editor will also become a member of the Editorial Board of BJPsych (role description here). This involves:

  • Reviewing papers for the journal on a regular basis (i.e. 6 per year)
  • Contributing content such as original research, editorials, commentaries, ideas for commissions topics and potential authors.
  • Attending board meetings around three times a year, either in person or remotely.


We are aiming to find the person who is most suited to the role and welcome applications from people of all backgrounds, including gender, age and ethnicity. We want an editorial board that reflects our values of equality and diversity with representation from a range of backgrounds. Therefore, we particularly encourage applications from underrepresented groups in academic psychiatry.

Required:

  • Experience of writing about research and writing for a general audience.
  • Record of publishing and peer-reviewing mental health research.
  • Experience of collegial and collaborative team work.


Desirable:

  • Creativity, innovation and passion for psychiatric literature and its latest developments.
  • Experience of writing about mental health research.
  • Experience of writing to monthly publication deadlines.
  • Extensive connections for Kaleidoscope column promotion

Recruitment Process:

  1. CV and cover letter circulated to Editor-in-Chief to confirm entry requirements are met.
  2. Consultation with Deputy Editor team and current Editor as required
  3. Kaleidoscope Editors are recruited for a term of 3 years, subject to annual review and an initial probation period of 6 months. Terms can be extended at the discretion of the Editor-in-Chief.
