Published online by Cambridge University Press:  04 February 2010

Extract

In England musical biography, in spite of its tempting possibilities has not yet attracted the attention of the zealous disciples of Freud and Jung. Composers, and even famous prima donna conductors, have so far escaped psychoanalytical scrutiny of their Libido, Oedipus, and ego-complexes. Free of such analysis, the new edition of Peter Warlock's (Philip Heseltine) book on the life and works of Frederick Delius with additions, annotations and comments by Hubert Foss (The Bodley Head, 15/- net) offers the reader fascinating and self-revealing portraits of two of the strangest figures in English music.
