Calculations by Drobyshevski and Yuferev (1974) suggest that magnetic flux is ‘topologically pumped’ to the bottom of a convecting Benard layer as the electrical conductivity is increased. This is shown to be mistaken: however, compressible flows where motion is mainly around fieldlines can confine flux near their base.
