Instrumentation presently in use for low resolution, digital spectroscopy on 1 meter class telescopes at three observatories - Lick, Kitt Peak, and Cerro Tololo - is reviewed. A detailed comparison is made between the performance of a typical two-dimensional photon counter, the “2D-Frutti”, and currently-available CCDs. Prospects for further detector advances center on large-format, low-noise, uvsensitive CCDs.
