16. Some effects of hydromagnetic waves in the solar atmosphere
Published online by Cambridge University Press: 18 July 2016
Abstract
A hitherto undisclosed source of absorption of hydromagnetic waves, due to the presence of neutral atoms, is investigated quantitatively. In the chromosphere the rate of absorption due to this effect may be 1010 times greater than that due to ordinary viscosity.
General solar heating, due to hydromagnetic waves caused by granules, is investigated and order-of-magnitude agreement with observational data is found.
The new effect is discussed in connexion with heating near sunspots and with flares.
