I fear I may have little new light to throw on this difficult subject; but I love Ignatius, and should like to think that others may be drawn into the same affection. I propose, (I) to consider the meaning of the question; (2) (my main purpose) to say something of the Episcopate in Ignatius; (3) to venture a few remarks on later history.

page 273 note 1 Dr Allen, A. V. G., in Christian Institutions (1898), p. 275 f.Google Scholar, has shown in some detail how “the larger divisions of Protestantism still perpetuate the various attitudes of monasticism, in so far as they were expressions of permanent tendencies in religion,… each standing for some single truth which the world seemed in danger of neglecting”; and now modern English “non-conformity” has striking parallels with earlier movements; Independency with self-contained Benedictines; Puritan simplicity and austerity with Cistercians or Carmelites; Genevan zeal for preaching with that of the Dominican Friar Preachers. Francis Thompson, the poet, himself a Franciscan Tertiary, in an essay on General Booth's In Darkest England, calls the Salvation Army a Religious Order, and pleads with the followers of Assisi to emulate William Booth.
