Extract

This book is the result of preliminary work for the sequel to my Henry VIII and Francis I: the final conflict (Leiden, 2012), in which I intend to cover the relations between France and the British Isles in the period 1547–1565, to be called France and the Hegemony of the British Isles. In the course of this I became aware of how limited was knowledge of the French ambassadors after the Noailles brothers in the 1550s. I hope that this book partly fills that gap. It will be followed by a further study, of Paul de Foix.
