1 The name “Housebook Master” is used here because the “Master of the Amsterdam Cabinet” is unnecessarily awkward and certainly not justified by the need to stress his probably Netherlandish origins.
2 I believe the Master's print of a scratching dog (p. 177) either symbolizes the uncontrollable demands of the flesh, as suggested by Michael Loderstedt, or, more probably, works as a model for the many religious scenes which feature dogs menacing or blindly ignoring sacred figures.
