1 Since this brief review cannot even list, let alone characterize, the fifty different scholarly contributions to this volume, it seems wiser to consider the volume as a whole than to isolate particular studies. Special commendation is due the Board of Editors and the Editor-in-Chief for executing a formidable assignment with care and distinction. The work of the publisher, J. J. Augustin, is admirable.
