1 I am indebted to my colleague Allan W. Futrell, the most knowledgeable person of my acquaintance about English Renaissance canting, for corroboration of my doubts about this paper. He is unaware of any early use of mark in criminal argot, and point out that Henley and Farener's massive Slang and its Analogies does not enter the word as a canting term. Neither, needless to say, does the OED.
