The single sheet advertisement of John Playford (British Museum Bagford Collection, Harley 5936/421) was the subject of an introductory article by William C. Smith in 1926. Since then this document, important in the history of English music publishing, has been almost totally neglected.

∗ The format of this item and of Philip Rosseter's Lessons for consort would appear to be quarto. However, on the basis of the fragments of the missing Rosseter lute part discovered in the Bodleian Library it seems clear that Playford determined the size classification of these two items from the largest part-book, and they are therefore correctly placed in this list.
