In this paper we investigated two of the most common representations of proximities, two-dimensional euclidean planes and additive trees. Our purpose was to develop guidelines for comparing these representations, and to discover properties that could help diagnose which representation is more appropriate for a given set of data. In a simulation study, artificial data generated either by a plane or by a tree were scaled using procedures for fitting either a plane (KYST) or a tree (ADDTREE). As expected, the appropriate model fit the data better than the inappropriate model for all noise levels. Furthermore, the two models were roughly comparable: for all noise levels, KYST accounted for plane data about as well as ADDTREE accounted for tree data. Two properties of the data proved useful in distinguishing between the models: the skewness of the distribution of distances, and the proportion of elongated triangles, which measures departures from the ultrametric inequality, Applications of KYST and ADDTREE to some twenty sets of real data, collected by other investigators, showed that most of these data could be classified clearly as favoring either a tree or a two-dimensional representation.

It is shown that the presently available statistical tests for the Rasch model are insensitive to violation of the unidimensionality axiom. Two new test statistics are presented. The first one, Q1, is sensitive to the same effects as the presently available statistics, but has some desirable properties of a nonstatistical nature. The second statistic, Q2, is sensitive to violation of local stochastic independence and unidimensionality and thus fills an existing gap.

A maximum likelihood estimation procedure was developed to fit unweighted and weighted additive models to conjoint data obtained by the categorical rating, the pair comparison or the directional ranking method. The scoring algorithm used to fit the models was found to be both reliable and efficient, and the program MAXADD is capable of handling up to 300 parameters to be estimated. Practical uses of the procedure are reported to demonstrate various advantages of the procedure as a statistical method.

Formulas for the standard error of measurement of three measures of change—simple difference scores, residualized difference scores, and the measure introduced by Tucker, Damarin, and Messick—are derived. Equating these formulas by pairs yields additional explicit formulas which provide a practical guide for determining the relative error of the three measures in any pretest-posttest design. The functional relationship between the standard error of measurement and the correlation between pretest and posttest observed scores remains essentially the same for each of the three measures despite variations in other test parameters (reliability coefficients, standard deviations), even when pretest and posttest errors of measurement are correlated.

The kinds of individual differences in perceptions permitted by the weighted euclidean model for multidimensional scaling (e.g., INDSCAL) are much more restricted than those allowed by Tucker’s Three-mode Multidimensional Scaling (TMMDS) model or Carroll’s Idiosyncratic Scaling (IDIOSCAL) model. Although, in some situations the more general models would seem desirable, investigators have been reluctant to use them because they are subject to transformational indeterminacies which complicate interpretation. In this article, we show how these indeterminacies can be removed by constructing specific models of the phenomenon under investigation. As an example of this approach, a model of the size-weight illusion is developed and applied to data from two experiments, with highly meaningful results. The same data are also analyzed using INDSCAL. Of the two solutions, only the one obtained by using the size-weight model allows examination of individual differences in the strength of the illusion; INDSCAL can not represent such differences. In this sample, however, individual differences in illusion strength turn out to be minor. Hence the INDSCAL solution, while less informative than the size-weight solution, is nonetheless easily interpretable.

A datum is often a continuous function x(t) of a variable such as time observed over some interval. One or more such functions are observed for each subject or unit of observation. The extension of classical data analytic techniques designed for p-variate observations to such data is discussed. The essential step is the expression of the classical problem in the language of functional analysis, after which the extension to functions is a straightforward matter. A schematic device called the duality diagram is a very useful tool for describing an analysis and for suggesting new possibilities. Least squares approximation, descriptive statistics, principal components analysis, and canonical correlation analysis are discussed within this broader framework.

In the last decade several authors discussed the so-called minimum trace factor analysis (MTFA), which provides the greatest lower bound (g.l.b.) to reliability. However, the MTFA fails to be scale free. In this paper we propose to solve the scale problem by maximization of the g.l.b. as the function of weights. Closely related to the primal problem of the g.l.b. maximization is the dual problem. We investigate the primal and dual problems utilizing convex analysis techniques. The asymptotic distribution of the maximal g.l.b. is obtained provided the population covariance matrix satisfies sone uniqueness and regularity assumptions. Finally we outline computational algorithms and consider numerical examples.

When measuring the same variables on different “occasions”, two procedures for canonical analysis with stationary compositing weights are developed. The first, SUMCOV, maximizes the sum of the covariances of the canonical variates subject to norming constraints. The second, COLLIN, maximizes the largest root of the covariances of the canonical variates subject to norming constraints. A characterization theorem establishes a model building approach. Both methods are extended to allow for Cohort Sequential Designs. Finally a numerical illustration utilizing Nesselroade and Baltes data is presented.

A unidimensional latent trait model for responses scored in two or more ordered categories is developed. This “Partial Credit” model is a member of the family of latent trait models which share the property of parameter separability and so permit “specifically objective” comparisons of persons and items. The model can be viewed as an extension of Andrich's Rating Scale model to situations in which ordered response alternatives are free to vary in number and structure from item to item. The difference between the parameters in this model and the “category boundaries” in Samejima's Graded Response model is demonstrated. An unconditional maximum likelihood procedure for estimating the model parameters is developed.

The importance of appropriate test selection for a given research endeavor cannot be overemphasized. Using samples drawn from eleven populations (differing in shape, peakedness, and density in the tails), this study investigates the small sample empirical powers of nine k-sample tests against ordered location alternatives under completely randomized designs. The results then are intended to aid the researcher in the selection of a particular procedure appropriate for a given endeavor. To highlight this an industrial psychology application involving work productivity is presented.

The mathematics required to calculate the asymptotic standard errors of the parameters of three commonly used logistic item response models is described and used to generate values for some common situations. It is shown that the maximum likelihood estimation of a lower asymptote can wreak havoc with the accuracy of estimation of a location parameter, indicating that if one needs to have accurate estimates of location parameters (say for purposes of test linking/equating or computerized adaptive testing) the sample sizes required for acceptable accuracy may be unattainable in most applications. It is suggested that other estimation methods be used if the three parameter model is applied in these situations.

Two algorithms are described for marginal maximum likelihood estimation for the one-parameter logistic model. The more efficient of the two algorithms is extended to estimation for the linear logistic model. Numerical examples of both procedures are presented.

The paper deals with clustering problems where grouping is constrained by a symmetric and reflexive relation. For solving clustering problems with relational constraints two methods are adapted: the “standard” hierarchical clustering procedure based on the Lance and Williams formula, and local optimization procedure, CLUDIA. To illustrate these procedures, clusterings of the European countries are given based on the developmental indicators where the relation is determined by the geographical neighbourhoods of countries.

Bounds are here developed for the multiple correlation of common factors with the items whose factors they are. It is then easy to see, under broad but not completely general conditions, the circumstances under which an infinite item domain does or does not perfectly determine selected subsets of its common factors.

The details of EM algorithms for maximum likelihood factor analysis are presented for both the exploratory and confirmatory models. The algorithm is essentially the same for both cases and involves only simple least squares regression operations; the largest matrix inversion required is for a q × q symmetric matrix where q is the matrix of factors. The example that is used demonstrates that the likelihood for the factor analysis model may have multiple modes that are not simply rotations of each other; such behavior should concern users of maximum likelihood factor analysis and certainly should cast doubt on the general utility of second derivatives of the log likelihood as measures of precision of estimation.

PINDIS, as recently presented by Lingoes and Borg [1978] not only marks the latest development within the scope of individual differences scaling, but, may be of benefit in some closely related topics, such as target analysis. Decisions on whether the various models available from PINDIS fit fallible data are relatively arbitrary, however, since a statistical theory of the fit measures is lacking. Using Monte Carlo simulation, expected fit measures as well as some related statistics were therefore obtained by scaling sets of 4(4)24 random configurations of 5(5)30 objects in 2, 3, and 4 dimensions (individual differences case) and by fitting one random configuration to a fixed random target for 5(5)30 objects in 2, 3, and 4 dimensions (target analysis case). Applications are presented.

One of the intriguing questions of factor analysis is the extent to which one can reduce the rank of a symmetric matrix by only changing its diagonal entries. We show in this paper that the set of matrices, which can be reduced to rank r, has positive (Lebesgue) measure if and only if r is greater or equal to the Ledermann bound. In other words the Ledermann bound is shown to be almost surely the greatest lower bound to a reduced rank of the sample covariance matrix. Afterwards an asymptotic sampling theory of so-called minimum trace factor analysis (MTFA) is proposed. The theory is based on continuous and differential properties of functions involved in the MTFA. Convex analysis techniques are utilized to obtain conditions for differentiability of these functions.

This paper is concerned with the study of covariance structural models in several populations. Estimation theory of the parameters that are subject to general functional restraints is developed based on the generalized least squares approach. Asymptotic properties of the constrained estimator are studied; and asymptotic chi-square tests are presented to evaluate appropriate model comparisons. The method of multipliers and the standard reparametrization technique are discussed in obtaining the estimates. The methodology is demonstrated by a set of real data.

The objective of this paper is to introduce and motivate additional properties and interpretations for the redundancy variables. It is shown that these variables can be derived by application of certain invariance arguments and without reference to the index of redundancy. In addition, an optimality property for the variables is presented which is important whenever one restricts attention in a study to a subset of the redundancy variables. This optimality property pertains to the subset rather than to the individual variables.
