Summary

Summary

A new self-rating questionnaire, the inventory to diagnose depression (IDD), was designed according to the criteria of DSM-III by means of an algorithm run on a micro-computer, to permit the diagnosis of major depressive disorders. Apart from presenting its French version, which was verified by way of the back-translation technique, this paper summarizes the main available data concerning its metrological qualities and potential use, in the field of epidemiology and clinical research. A possible adaptation to the criteria of the DSM-III, revised for major depressive disorder, is also considered.
