APSA Workshops in the Middle East and North Africa
APSA’s 2015 MENA Workshops program concluded with a one-week conference in Kuwait, hosted by the Alsalam Center for Development and Strategic Studies from December 13–17, 2015. The event was part of a multi-year initiative to support political science research and networking in the Arab Middle East and North Africa. Funded by the Carnegie Corporation of New York, the MENA Workshops program is a major component of APSA’s efforts to engage with international political science communities and support research networks linking US scholars with their colleagues overseas.
The Kuwait workshop was the second in a two-part series “The Resource Curse in Middle East and North Africa.” Coleading the program were Justin Gengler (Qatar University), Michael Herb (Georgia State University, USA), Ghanim Alnajjar (Kuwait University), Alanoud Al Sharekh (Kuwait University), and Mark Tessler (University of Michigan, USA).
Participating scholars included 22 PhD students and early-career faculty from across the MENA region, Europe, and the United States. Each scholar is currently undertaking research related to the rentier state literature and issues currently affecting resource-rich states. The workshop featured eight research panels in which participants presented their findings and received feedback from their colleagues and workshop coleaders. Additionally, the program included professional development sessions on publishing, networking, and the profession, as well as a public lecture delivered by Mohammad Al-Sabah, former Kuwaiti Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs. Following their participation in the 2015 MENA Workshops program, alumni received a three-year membership to APSA and are eligible to apply for small grant funding to advance their research.
Since 2013, APSA has organized six workshops throughout the MENA region. Approximately 70 scholars have taken part in the program, which is funded through 2016. For more information, visit APSA’s MENA Workshops website at http://web.apsanet.org/mena/. ■
