In the two decades from 1860 to 1880 the eastern image of the American West changed drastically. Prior to 1860 that image had been based primarily upon the accounts of a few travelers and explorers. It was an image of generalities, distortions, and vague impressions in which imagination was a significant element. But with the coming of photography, the transcontinental railroad, and the surge of humanity that spilled westward following the Civil War, the image acquired a refinement in detail. Much of the West should have become commonplace.
